Chapter 108 Never Let Her Cry Again
Ryan was huffing and puffing, trying to drag this massive dining chair that was way taller than him. His face was as white as a ghost, showing just how much effort he was putting in.
He finally got the chair over and, still panting, asked, "Hey, want some strawberry milk? I can grab it for ya."
But Harper shot him down quick, "No way, I'll handle it! That chair's too tall. Don't climb or your dad's gonna blame me... again!"
She made sure to emphasize "your dad" 'cause she was still ticked off about what happened that day.
In her head, she was fuming, 'If he doesn't come and say sorry, this ain't over!'
Harper didn't give Ryan a chance to say anything. She angrily climbed onto the chair, snatched the milk, and stormed off without looking back.
Ryan watched her leave, feeling all kinds of guilty and sad.
He just wanted to help her out.
Lately, he couldn't even focus on reading. Every time he thought about Harper's tear-streaked face, his heart just ached.
It was his fault she got in trouble that day, so he was trying to make it up to her, but she still wasn't having it.
Ryan sighed. Then he heard the door creak open. His eyes lit up, and he dashed out.
Meanwhile, Harper headed straight to the backyard, not even glancing back. She plopped down on the swing chair, ripped open a bag of chips, and started munching angrily. 'Chips are still not as good as durian popcorn,' she thought, disappointed.
Harper shook her head, bummed out, and took a big gulp of milk to cheer herself up.
Just then, she spotted a small figure coming her way.
Ugh, why was he here again?
So annoying!
Not having durian popcorn was bad enough, couldn't she get a break?
In the distance, Ryan was lugging a big bag, wobbling towards her. He looked like he was carrying a ton of bricks.
In the bright sunlight, his face looked even paler, but he was grinning like a kid on Christmas morning.
As he got closer, Ryan could see the frustration all over Harper's face, like she had a big "do not disturb" sign on her forehead. But he kept going.
Harper saw her warning look wasn't working and got even more annoyed. "What do you want now?" she snapped.
These days, he was everywhere she went.
And she never gave him a warm welcome, but he still kept bugging her. Wasn't it obvious she was mad?
She hated him!
Ryan put the bag down, bit his lip, and said softly, "I asked the maid to get these for you."
Harper snorted, ready to refuse, but then she caught a whiff of something sweet and her nose twitched. Her eyes lit up.
Wait, that smell...
Ryan pulled out something and held it up like a treasure. "You really like durian, right? Here, have some!"
Harper swallowed her words and her saliva, staring at the thing in Ryan's hand.
Under the thin plastic wrap, the fresh, plump durian flesh smelled so good, tempting her to take a bite.
She hadn't had fresh durian in days.
But this was from Ryan, and she didn't want his stuff.
But it smelled so good!
She was just a kid, why did she have to deal with this?
Harper made a tough call and decided to stick to her principles and refuse Ryan's "bribe."
But the real test was just starting.
Harper didn't take it, and Ryan didn't give up. He placed it beside her, then pulled out durian cake, durian popcorn, macarons, sandwich cookies, pudding, and more, piling them on the swing chair.
In no time, Harper was surrounded by treats, living one of her dreams: being surrounded by food.
Now Harper was drowning in the rich aroma, unable to stop swallowing, her heart in turmoil.
Suddenly, Ryan pulled out something else and said excitedly, "Try this first."
Harper recognized it instantly and took a deep breath.
It was the new durian ice cream!
She had wanted to buy it before, but it was always sold out, and he actually got it.
Harper clutched the chips in her hand, mentally reminding herself, 'Don't eat his stuff, resist, resist, can't resist!'
Harper snatched the ice cream from Ryan's hand, looked up at the sky, and said, "I'm just afraid it'll melt and waste such a good thing."
Ryan didn't care about her words. He was just happy she took it.
His smile was pure and innocent, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, you're right."
Harper swallowed and shoved the chips into Ryan's arms, then quickly added, "Don't get any ideas, I just have no place to put them."
After saying that, she couldn't wait to rip open the ice cream and take a big bite.
Ryan watched Harper's face light up with pure joy, feeling super satisfied. His little face was beaming with happiness.
But when Harper noticed his expression, she got a bit uneasy, and her smile quickly faded.
She cleared her throat and said, "You got nothing better to do? Stop staring at me. I don't like being watched while I eat."
Ryan scratched his head awkwardly. "Oh, sorry. You enjoy, I'll head out."
He hugged the bag of chips, reluctantly walking away, glancing back a few times before finally leaving.
Harper kept an eye on him out of the corner of her eye. Once she was sure he was gone, she dropped the act and smiled happily, diving into the treats.
After quickly finishing the ice cream, Harper held the durian flesh in both hands, her big eyes sparkling as she licked her lips.
Meanwhile, up on the second floor of the villa, Ryan was pressed against the glass, watching her with a satisfied and relieved smile.
Seeing her eat so happily made him feel at ease.
Her smile was so beautiful, he vowed never to make her cry again.
Thinking this, he hugged the bag of chips Harper had given him.
In another room on the second floor, Sarah was also watching Harper in the yard.
She had just wanted to open the window for some fresh air and happened to catch the scene in the backyard.
Ryan was Lisa's kid, and she hadn't interacted with him much, nor had they spoken.
Ryan had been living here for a while now, and she noticed he seemed a bit scared of her, always being very cautious around her.
Not only that, Ryan spoke very little and never caused trouble, seemingly not as bad as his parents.
However, seeing Ryan getting close to Harper, Sarah instinctively didn't want Harper to get too close to him.
But at the same time, for some reason, she also felt a bit sorry for Ryan.
Ryan was so young and already in poor health. When Lisa brought him to cause trouble before, he seemed very helpless.
This thought flashed through Sarah's mind but was quickly replaced by caution.
Watching Harper eat so happily, she let out an almost inaudible sigh and turned her gaze away.
In the yard, Harper burped, rubbing her round belly, realizing she had indulged too much today. "If Sarah finds out, she'll definitely say I'm getting chubby like a little pig."
So she started wandering around the backyard, not heading back inside until nightfall.
Seeing Sarah coming downstairs, Harper's eyes lit up, and she ran over to hug her hand. "Mommy, why did you come down?"
Sarah smiled indulgently, wiping the cream off Harper's cheek. "I came down to have dinner with you."
Harper nodded happily, pulling Sarah's hand towards the dining room.
At this moment, Ryan came downstairs. Seeing Sarah, he was first stunned, then politely greeted, "Sarah."
Sarah saw Ryan's polite yet cautious demeanor, a strange look flashing in her eyes, and she simply responded.
Harper, seeing Ryan, had a slightly awkward expression and then turned her face away to ignore him.
At the dining table, the maid was setting the utensils and smiled when she saw Sarah, "Mrs. Valencia, Mr. V mentioned he's got plans out tonight, and won't make it back for dinner."
"Okay," Sarah replied casually.
His absence suited her better; out of sight, out of mind, just the way she liked it.
Hearing this, Ryan pursed his lips and glanced at Sarah cautiously.
He knew Sarah might not like him, and with Antonio not around, he decided not to bother them.
So Ryan lowered his head, grabbed some food, and turned to leave, planning to eat alone in his room.
Seeing this, Sarah suddenly felt a bit uncomfortable. After hesitating for a moment, she called out to him. "Wait."
Ryan realized she was calling him and immediately stopped, his heart pounding.
He slowly turned around, looking at her weakly.
Seeing his cautious demeanor, Sarah paused for a long time before saying, "Come and eat with us."
Upon hearing this, Harper, who was sitting obediently, instantly deflated, her small face drooping, the taste in her mouth turning sour.
'Why did Sarah invite him to join? He is Lisa's son!' she thought.
But since Sarah had spoken, she didn't dare say more and just stuffed another piece of meat into her mouth, chewing hard.
Ryan, on the other hand, widened his eyes in disbelief, feeling a bit grateful, and then obediently walked over and sat down quietly.
However, he still felt very uneasy, keeping his head down and eating silently, only focusing on the food in front of him.
