Chapter 477 Explanation
"You told me that you suspected Serene might have a connection to Brady's incident. I discreetly investigated and confirmed that she was indeed on the rooftop that day. Furthermore, the last person who saw Brady was Serene."
Sarah turned around, and Antonio could see her eyes were already red. "Please, make yourself clear. What exactly happened?"
Antonio motioned for Sarah to sit down, attempting to steady her emotions. "Sarah, try not to get agitated. Listen carefully, okay?"
"Let me emphasize one thing first: even if Serene was the last person Brady saw, we have no evidence proving she pushed him off. After all, Serene is in a wheelchair; she couldn’t possibly have the means or strength to push an adult male off the building.”
“Why didn’t she admit it from the start? And why are you defending her?!”
Sarah's emotions ran high, especially when it came to anything related to Brady. She couldn’t remain as calm as Antonio.
Antonio gently held Sarah’s shoulders. “Sarah, hear me out. This is a complex story, involving Brady and—"
"What did she say exactly?"
Antonio struggled to articulate the hurtful words. It was difficult to fathom how Brady could say such things, even though Antonio deep down didn't believe he was that kind of person. Currently, there was no counter-evidence, no way to prove that what Serene had claimed was false.
“Antonio, are you going to speak up or not? If you won’t, I’ll ask her myself!”
Sarah attempted to rise, but Antonio quickly pushed her back down. “Sarah, I’ll tell you.”
Antonio took a deep breath. “When I spoke to Serene, she admitted that she had met Brady on the rooftop. However, it was Brady who initiated the meeting. He had heard some rumors about Serene and me, and he confronted her. He became quite agitated and saying some incredibly hurtful things.”
"How hurtful?" Sarah scoffed coldly.
“He said that Serene should have died in that car accident, that her broken legs were divine punishment, and other hurtful remarks that cut deep.”
Antonio sighed inwardly. "Sarah, I also don't believe Brady is that kind of person. I’m still investigating…”
Sarah let out a bitter laugh, disappointment evident in her gaze as she looked at Antonio. “You don’t believe? You don’t believe, yet you ended up in bed with Serene. If you did believe, would you now be running away with Serene?”
Did she not know what kind of person Brady was?
Even when he was falsely accused of rape years ago, Brady had never spoken such vile words!
“Antonio, my brother hasn’t done a single bad thing in his life! The only person he ever had issues with was you, and even then, what has he done besides give you a few scoldings?
"Even if he knew about whatever it is that’s going on between you and Serene, he would never say such things! Antonio, how can you just believe it? Just because these words came from Serene's mouth, you believed her, didn't you?!"
Antonio became flustered, "No! I'm just repeating what Serene said. I didn't say I believed it!"
“What’s the difference? If you didn’t believe, why would you end up in bed with her after hearing her side of the story?!” Sarah stood up from the sofa, her face turning extremely pale with anger. “Antonio, you truly disgust me!”
"Sarah, can you please calm down a bit? We don't have any evidence right now. If we go accusing Serene based on this so-called speculation, we have no chance of winning, and it’s very likely she could counter-sue us for defamation. Then there would be no one to vindicate Brady!"
Sarah couldn’t continue listening to any explanations; at this point, there wasn’t a shred of trust left in her heart for Antonio.
"Antonio, you and Serene share a certain intimacy because you've been in bed together, but I haven’t. Let me make it clear, my brother would never utter those things, let alone do such a thing. His jump off the building must have been influenced by something Serene did! If you choose to defend Serene, then in my heart, you two are alike – both suspects in a crime!"
As those agonizing words reached him, Antonio sensed his heart undergoing a slow torture, akin being sliced repeatedly by the dull edge of a knife. Each breath became a struggle, yet he understood the urgency of calming Sarah and steadying her emotions.
Antonio rubbed his face helplessly, exhaling deeply. He realized that any explanation now would be futile.
“Sarah, I—"
His words were interrupted by a sudden clatter nearby. Startled, he looked up to see Sarah frantically throwing herself beside Brady's bed.
Antonio immediately sat up in alarm. “Sarah, what happened?!”
Sarah leaned in close to her brother’s face, staring unblinkingly.
At that moment, she had no intention of continuing the argument with Antonio any longer, because—
