Chapter 742 The Day of Memory Recovery
Antonio chuckled, thinking that young people nowadays liked someone but never expressed it directly.
They both agreed on the plan and broke the news to Sarah when they got back.
Sarah asked, "So, should we get Cynthia admitted to the hospital?"
Right now, Cynthia's condition was the priority, so Sarah didn't dig into the whole electric shock thing. She figured she'd have plenty of time to grill Antonio about it later.
Sarah said, "Let's get her admitted right away and hire a couple of caregivers."
Antonio turned to Timothy. "I'll leave the check-up to you, Dr. Reed."
Timothy glanced at Mary, his expression hard to read. "No problem."
Antonio noticed the look and raised an eyebrow. Maybe being with Sarah made him want to see others find happiness too.
After getting Cynthia settled in, Sarah took Mary back to school, telling her not to let this mess up her own stuff, then went back to be with Cynthia for her neurology exam.
After the exam, Timothy suggested, "You should go home and rest. Come back tomorrow when the results are in."
Antonio figured with caregivers around, everything should be fine. Plus, Sarah wasn't in any shape to stay overnight at the hospital.
He suggested, "Sarah, how about we head home?"
Sarah looked at Cynthia, who was already asleep after all the tests. She felt a pang of sadness and didn't want to leave.
Timothy thought for a moment and said, "Don't worry, she's my patient now too. I'm on night duty tonight, so I'll keep an extra eye on her."
Sarah gave him a grateful smile. "Thanks, Dr. Reed."
After leaving the ward, Antonio held Sarah's hand and casually brought up Timothy asking about Mary. "Sarah, do you think they could end up together?"
Sarah teased, "Why do you care about young people dating?"
Her mind was all on Cynthia; she couldn't think about anything else.
Antonio scratched his nose, feeling a bit down.
"I just feel like it's like looking at our younger selves!"
Antonio asked again, "Do you think they'll go through a lot before they open up to each other, like we did?"
Sarah gave him a weird look. "We've only known them for a day. Since when do you care so much about other people's love lives?"
Antonio scratched his nose awkwardly. He just wanted to change the subject to distract her. "Alright, alright."
Sarah asked again, "Seriously, when did you start being so nosy about other people's business?"
Before Antonio could answer, she sped up to the car, urging, "Let's get home. We need to be back early tomorrow for Cynthia!"
Not everyone was like her and Antonio, so she thought the comparison was pointless.
As she opened the car door, she paused and turned to ask, "Are you trying to distract me?"
Antonio froze, not sure what to say.
'Is she still hung up on that electric shock thing Timothy mentioned?' he wondered.
The next second, Sarah said, "Don't worry, I'm not that fragile."
Sarah got into the car, buckled up, and said, "With Cynthia only having me around, I have to take good care of her. I can handle this."
Antonio let out a sigh of relief and said, "Yeah, I know you're amazing."
Even though Sarah didn't push about the electric shock, Antonio knew it was a ticking time bomb if left unresolved.
Back at the hotel, Sarah had just taken off her coat to freshen up when Antonio pulled her to the sofa.
"Sarah, sit down. I need to tell you something," he said seriously.
Seeing his serious face, Sarah felt a knot in her stomach. "Are you sick too?"
She remembered the time she mistakenly thought he had a terminal illness.
She said worriedly, "Just tell me. Don't scare me."
Antonio quickly reassured her, "No, I'm fine. I need to tell you about something from the past that you don't know."
"What is it?" Sarah asked.
"Did you hear what Dr. Reed said earlier?" Antonio took a deep breath. "He was right. I did undergo electroconvulsive therapy. The nausea, vomiting, and limb stiffness are all side effects."
Sarah stared at him, stunned.
She had guessed right. Antonio and Timothy had talked about the electric shock.
Her heart sank.
'Why would a healthy person undergo electroconvulsive therapy?' she wondered.
Panic set in as she asked, her voice trembling, "Why... why did you do it?"
"Because of amnesia," Antonio said, holding her hand tightly. "I had amnesia but felt a special connection to you. I wanted to figure out if my past involved you. I suspected Harold was up to something, so I found a reliable doctor. He said electroconvulsive therapy could help recover memories. So..."
Sarah's tears started to fall, her fingers trembling.
"So, you went through with it?"
"Yes." Looking at Sarah, Antonio smiled, feeling grateful that his decision was correct; otherwise, he wouldn't have remembered who he truly loved.
"You can still smile?" Sarah pushed his hand away. "Why didn't you tell me earlier?"
Antonio hugged her tightly, whispering, "I'm sorry. I didn't want to see you cry like this. It makes me feel useless."
"Are you okay now?" Sarah thought of the terrifying scenes of electroconvulsive therapy and its side effects. She couldn't help but think how painful it must've been.
Sarah was almost incoherent. "When will those side effects go away?"
"I'm fine." Antonio wanted to brush it off, but under Sarah's gaze, he had to be honest. "Don't worry, it's not life-threatening."
Sarah stared into his eyes, pressing, "So when will the side effects go away?"
Realizing he couldn't lie anymore, Antonio admitted, "Not sure."
Hearing that, Sarah was almost furious. How could Antonio joke about his health like that? But if he hadn't recovered his memory, they might not have reunited now.
