Chapter 471 A Chance
"Watch out, watch out!"
The next moment, Sarah fell heavily to the ground, with a bicycle lying next to her, its wheels still spinning rapidly.
A young man dressed in sportswear and wearing a transparent raincoat stood by in shock, then quickly steadied himself and rushed to help Sarah up.
"Miss, are you okay? You're injured. Look, I should take you to the hospital. I'm so sorry! The rain was too heavy, and I didn't see you while I was cycling. Are you alright, Miss? Please, say something!"
Sarah's ears were repeatedly filled with his voice. After what seemed like an eternity, she lifted her gaze and finally managed to see the face of the person before her. He had a clean-cut appearance, with obedient-looking eyes, resembling a college student who had not yet graduated.
Sarah silently shook her head and slowly pushed away the young man next to her, staggering forward step by step.
She stood there, completely drenched, her wet hair clinging to her back. Fresh abrasions adorned her legs and arms. Blood from the wounds mingled with the pouring rain, tracing paths down her body.
Yet, Sarah was numb to the pain. All she sensed was a bone-chilling coldness, devoid of any warmth—much like her heart.
Seeing Sarah's dispirited form, the young man thought he might have knocked her senseless. Frightened and anxious, he didn't think of anything else but hurriedly picked up his bike and ran after her.
"Miss, stop walking, you’re hurt! Let me take you to the hospital; I'll take full responsibility!"
Sarah was oblivious to his entreaties, simply walking ahead blankly, her eyes clouded. In fact, she hadn't even realized she had wandered onto the main road and was injured.
Images flashed before her eyes, still dominated by the sight of Antonio and another woman sharing a bed.
Tears welled up in Sarah's eyes, hot tears mixing with rain running down her face. The rain poured harder, and the tear in her heart widened, so vast that even if she wanted to scream in pain, she had no strength left.
Perhaps, it would be better to just die.
The young man kept chasing after Sarah, growing more anxious as she didn't respond. "Miss! The rain is getting heavier! You're hurt and can't keep walking. There's a red light ahead!"
He watched in horror as Sarah walked straight into a busy pedestrian crossing with traffic coming and going. In a panic, the young man grabbed Sarah's arm.
It was then that Sarah seemed to finally snap out of her daze, turning her head woodenly to glance at the man.
Suddenly feeling weak, she collapsed to the ground the next second.
The young man was shocked and quickly dropped his bike, rushing forward to shake Sarah. "Miss, are you alright!?"
The only response was Sarah’s face growing paler. Realizing something was terribly wrong, he scooped her up in his arms and hailed a taxi to rush to the hospital.
In the pouring rain, just as the taxi disappeared from the spot, a tall, ruggedly handsome man with an expression of urgency walked past, narrowly missing the departing cab...
Antonio, drenched in the rain, continuously dialed Sarah's number, looking around bewildered, but all he got was the cold busy signal.
He felt as cold outside as he did inside!
'Sarah, where on earth are you…'
Having no other options, Antonio thought he might try his luck at home.
…
Soaked through, he opened the door with a dreadful expression, only to find his children looking at each other perplexed.
"Where's Mommy? Why are you back by yourself?" asked Brian, rising to his feet, his expression grave.
Antonio choked on his words, his heart aching as he hurriedly asked, "Hasn't Mommy come back? Has she contacted any of you?"
But the children didn't answer him.
Harper said disappointedly, "Daddy, where were you today? We and Mommy waited so long for you and you never showed up. As a man, how can you not keep your promises? Mommy was really worried about you. You've really made her mad this time!"
Antonio felt unbearably sad, squatting down to comfort the children. "I'm sorry, Daddy was delayed because of some urgent matters today; it's my fault. I'll make it up to all of you and Mommy double, okay?"
Ethan pouted. "But today is your birthday! We and Mommy prepared this to make you happy for so long!"
A shock rippled through Antonio as he suddenly realized, belatedly, that today was his birthday! It was the reason Sarah had mustered the energy to suggest the family outing and wanted to give him a surprise.
But he... he had messed everything up!
How could this happen?! How heartbroken and disappointed Sarah must be?!
He really was a bastard!
Antonio couldn't find the words to describe his feelings at that moment. Had he known Sarah had planned the birthday surprise, he would never have gone to see Serene first.
His heart felt astringent, and his voice trembled as he said, "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry... Please forgive me..."
He didn't know if he was talking to the children or to Sarah, who wasn't even there.
Even Harper, who usually adored her dad the most, felt that this time he had gone too far and spilled all the details about the surprise they had prepared.
If Antonio did something wrong, he shouldn't get a surprise; he should feel regret!
Antonio looked over the plans and scrapbooks made by Sarah and the children, feeling both touched and distressed. It was as if a branding iron were searing his conscience, flipping back and forth in his heart.
Seeing Antonio becoming gradually silent and visibly in pain, the children realized how much he must be regretting his actions. They, too, felt uneasy.
All they could hope for was that their parents would reconcile.
Antonio knew he couldn’t defend himself; he was aware he was at fault, and expressing regret now seemed futile.
Apart from making amends and finding Sarah immediately to explain things, he didn't know what else he could do.
Antonio forcefully wiped his face and turned to Brian. “Brian, you must know where Mommy is, right? Can you help Daddy out? Daddy’s been a bastard, disappointing Mommy, but even bastards want a chance to make up for their mistakes, okay?”
