Chapter 500 No Longer Able to Trust Each Other
In this life, he had chosen Sarah.
On the hospital bed, Kevin was half-listening to the children's chatter, while also sneakily observing the couple. He had felt something was off between them during dinner, and their behavior now was even more conspicuous.
Just by Antonio's behavior alone, he could tell there was discord between them. He was usually so attached to Sarah, so it was unusual for him to maintain such a distance. And their eye contact, which used to be so constant, was now awkward and avoided.
But as an elder, it wasn't his place to meddle in their affairs directly. He could only gently guide them.
Kevin started a conversation, "Ethan, do you know why you and Brian were able to deceive your parents for so long?"
Ethan thought for a moment. "Because Brian and I are very good actors?"
Kevin shook his head with a smile, ruffled Ethan's hair, and said meaningfully, "Silly boy, it's because you trust each other. You knew Brian wouldn't give you away, and Brian knew you would hide yourself well. That's how you could cooperate seamlessly and live well together."
Ethan nodded with half-understanding, "So, the most important thing between people is trust?"
Kevin loudly affirmed. "Exactly! Take your parents as an example. When they decided to get married and have children, they were also holding the determination that they could form a happy family by trusting each other."
Sarah was taken aback.
Kevin, who was confused and thought of Sarah as his own daughter, didn't know about Sarah and Antonio's past. He assumed that the two had been in love all these years.
His words struck Sarah's heart.
That was right. When she decided to marry Antonio, she did hold such thoughts. She wanted to be with Antonio, have children, and grow old together.
But every event that happened afterwards seemed to be pushing her and Antonio in a completely different direction from their initial hopes.
And now, the word "trust" between them was laughable.
They could no longer trust each other.
Seeing the two deep in thought, Kevin felt that his words had an effect and continued, "When I was young, your grandmother and I trusted each other so much! Even if she went to a meeting with another man alone, I would never think there was anything between them!"
As he spoke, his tone became proud, "Your grandmother was great in every way, just a bit stubborn, just like your mother. Sometimes, I couldn't win against her. But I love her for that; she was always so strong..."
Sarah felt a moment of envy for their unquestionable love.
But she felt that Kevin was a little too excited today, so she interrupted, "Babies, let's listen to the story next time. Let Grandpa rest today."
The children were fascinated and surrounded Kevin, clamoring to see what their grandmother looked like.
Kevin waved his hand, "I'm fine! Your grandmother is the most beautiful woman I've ever seen in my life!"
Harper's eyes sparkled, "Really? I always thought Mommy was the most beautiful. I really want to see what Grandma looks like!"
Kevin laughed heartily, "Of course. Your mother is your grandmother's daughter, of course, she inherited her beauty!"
With that, he became prouder, "Wait, babies, Grandpa will get Grandma's picture for you."
Kevin made a move to get out of bed.
Sarah quickly stopped him, "Dad, we're in a hospital. Where are you going to find a picture? Let's find it when we get home, okay?"
But Kevin suddenly stood still, his eyes losing focus.
"Hospital? Why am I in a hospital? Where's the picture... where did I put the picture?"
Sarah sighed, realizing that his "clear time" for the day had run out.
"Dad, don't you remember? You're sick, and Mom's pictures are at home. You should sleep now, and I'll go get them when you wake up," she said.
Fortunately, Kevin still recognized Sarah and thought of her as his daughter, so he listened to her and returned to lie down on the bed.
"I still have to make lunch for my wife at noon. She said she wanted fries. Since she got pregnant, she has become more food-loving, and her little face has become round," he said.
Kevin seemed to be lost in his memories. He had a warm smile on his face, as if he had returned to the days when they were in love.
"She looks better when she's chubby. I told her to eat more before because being too thin isn't healthy. But she wouldn't listen. It wasn't until she got pregnant that she started to eat more."
The children were startled by Kevin's sudden change and looked at Sarah, not understanding what had happened.
At this time, Antonio came over, "Babies, Grandpa needs to rest now. I'll take you home first, and we can come to see Grandpa again tomorrow, okay?"
Harper had no choice but to nod, "Grandpa, you rest well, and we will come to see you tomorrow."
At this point, Kevin was completely lost in his own memories and didn't realize that there were still children around him. He kept talking to himself about how much he loved his wife.
Antonio picked up his daughter and glanced at Sarah, who was still taking care of Kevin. Seeing that she didn't look at him at all, he had to leave in disappointment.
Kevin was completely unaware that someone had left the room. Instead, he stared intently at Sarah's face and suddenly said, "Daughter, you look so much like your mother."
Sarah smiled and coaxed, "Of course, people always say that I'm carved out of the same mold as my mom."
In fact, it was Brady who said this, and the "mom" was not Kevin's wife, but Sarah's own late mother.
