Chapter 14 Lisa Got Mad at Me
She couldn't let Antonio know who she really was.
Antonio didn't push it and just asked, "What about your mom?"
Harper rolled her eyes. Trying to dig up info on her mom again, huh? She lifted her chin and snorted, not saying a word.
Just 'cause he asked, does she have to spill the beans?
Nope!
Seeing Harper clamming up, Antonio didn't bother anymore. He turned and left the dining room, heading upstairs to his study.
Watching him leave, Harper felt bored out of her mind.
The maid, who hadn't gotten a word in, finally spoke up, "Hungry? Let me get you something to eat."
Before Harper could answer, her stomach growled. She covered her belly, looking annoyed.
She hadn't eaten much before Antonio showed up and messed things up, and now she was starving.
Thinking she needed to eat to keep up the fight with Antonio, Harper nodded to the maid, dropping her bratty act. "Thanks."
So, Harper ate up and got her energy back.
Then, while the maid was tidying up the guest room, she bolted to the study.
Harper wasn't going to let Antonio have a moment's peace; she was on a mission to make him cry 24/7.
She barged in, ready to demand he heat up some milk for her, but the scene stopped her cold.
The study was dim, lit only by a desk lamp. Antonio sat behind the desk with a wine glass, half-hidden in shadows. His eyes were locked on a photo frame, looking all somber.
He didn't seem to notice Harper. He took a sip of wine, lost in his thoughts.
Harper wanted to bug him. She walked over, but Antonio kept ignoring her, still staring at the photo.
Curious, she leaned in for a closer look and her eyes went wide.
Wasn't that Sarah?
But it was her before the accident.
Why was her photo here?
Recognizing Sarah, Harper glanced at Antonio, who was silently drinking, and asked casually, "Who's this?"
Antonio pressed his lips together, his eyes giving nothing away. After a long pause, he said in a hoarse voice, "My wife."
Seeing his sad look, Harper felt a bit moved. She asked again, "Aren't you gonna marry Lisa?"
Having a wife and still marrying Lisa, wasn't he a jerk?
Unexpectedly, Antonio's usual cold demeanor softened. He gently caressed Sarah's photo with his long fingers, his eyes filled with emotions.
"No one can replace her."
Hearing this, Harper was stunned. She blinked at Antonio and asked uncertainly, "Do you like her?"
But this time, Antonio just curled his lips, his eyes dimming. "What does it matter if I like her? Will she ever come back?"
This left Harper completely floored!
Did she just hear that right? Did Antonio admit he liked Sarah?
This shock stayed with Harper all night. Lying in bed, she was still thinking about what Antonio had said.
She curled up under the covers and texted Ethan.
[Ethan, I'm good now. Lisa showed up, I ticked her off. Antonio doesn't like her and kicked her out. There's a pic of Mom in his study!]
[I saw him staring at Mom's photo, looking sad. He said she'd never come back.]
[Ethan, do you think he might actually like Mom?]
After firing off the messages, Harper clutched her little heart, waiting for a reply.
On the other end, Ethan's reaction was totally different.
His young face turned serious. Worried Harper might be getting played, he quickly texted back, reminding her over and over: [Remember how he treated Mom. It's all a show. Don't be fooled!]
Harper stared at the screen, feeling torn and a bit bummed. Is that really it?
Even though she'd only been around Antonio for less than a day, she felt that apart from being a bit harsh, Antonio wasn't as bad as she thought.
Maybe she should take some time to really check him out.
When Sarah walked in to find Ethan, he was staring at his phone, lost in thought.
"Ethan, have you figured out a way to get Harper out?"
Ethan snapped back to reality and quickly turned off his phone. "Mom, Harper says she's safe, being looked after by a maid. Don't worry, she's doing fine with Antonio."
But how could Sarah not worry?
As soon as she heard Harper was still with Antonio, she got super anxious. "No, I'm going to find Antonio right now and bring her back!"
"Wait." Ethan quickly grabbed Sarah. "Mom, you can't go."
Sarah asked, "Why not?"
Ethan fell silent, not wanting to spill what Harper had just said. "If you go now, won't he figure out you're Harper's mom? Then your cover's blown."
Seeing Sarah hesitate, Ethan continued, "Trust Harper. Didn't you always say she's smart and clever? Besides, the bad dad doesn't seem to want to hurt her. She should be able to find a way back soon."
Sarah knew Harper well, but...
As Sarah was still struggling, Ethan added, "Mom, for now, let's focus on getting the evidence and rescuing Brady quickly."
Sarah fell silent and finally nodded.
That's right, the surveillance footage from that day had been cut and could be destroyed at any time. It might be the only proof of Brady's innocence, and she had to get it ASAP!
If the footage was at Lisa's place, she thought of something and called Brian.
"Brian, pull up all the servant records for the Miller family, then pick one who's off tomorrow and upload her appearance to the holographic projection system."
"Got it."
The quick call ended, and within ten minutes, Sarah got the file from Brian. In less than ten seconds, she got a confirmation that the upload was done.
She took two white chips from her bag and placed them on both sides of her neck. Then she quickly operated her smartwatch, and the next moment, her appearance changed.
Even though it wasn't the first time seeing it, Ethan still exclaimed, "Wow, Brian's tech is seriously cool!"
You could change faces anytime, and as long as no one touched your face, they wouldn't know it was holographic projection tech!
Sarah looked in the mirror and smiled, satisfied.
