Chapter 468 The Lies of a Fall

"What did he say?" Antonio pressed.

Serene sniffled, saying, "He said my leg injury was a debt I owed to you both. He believed I deserved this miserable state, wishing I had died in that car crash so you and Sarah wouldn't have to deal with the difficulties I supposedly caused."

Antonio was taken aback, his expression a mix of shock and disbelief.

In his eyes, although Brady was always a bit misguided about him, he was never cruel. He couldn't imagine Brady saying such things to hurt someone with a disability.

Skeptical, Antonio's gaze hardened. "We have nothing to do with each other. Why didn't you set the record straight?"

Tears streamed down Serene's face as she shook her head. "I wanted to explain, but how could I? I didn’t even know who he was. I was afraid that saying more would lead to more mistakes; I couldn't defend myself.

"Later, just outside the operating room, I discovered that he was Sarah's brother, and suddenly everything fell into place. Maybe he had heard those rumors and wanted to defend his sister.

"But at that time, Sarah unexpectedly questioned whether Brady’s fall had any connection to me. Would she believe me if I disclosed this incident? I... I hadn't done anything wrong, yet I found myself facing such a trial.

"Antonio, I was also distressed about Mr. Miller's accident, but I unfairly endured his defamation and accusations, so I hesitated to get more entangled. Can you understand my position?"

Antonio fell silent. Even now, Sarah still believed that Serene was somehow involved with Brady's fall.

If Serene had told Sarah that she had met Brady on the rooftop that day, things would have definitely gotten worse.

Antonio took a deep breath. He couldn't completely trust Serene, but there was no solid evidence to prove that what she said was false.

"Serene, Brady should have had a bracelet with him. Hand it over to me," he stated.

Serene was taken aback. "What are you talking about? What bracelet? Even if he had a bracelet, how would it end up in my possession?"

"You don’t need to pretend anymore; I don’t believe you haven’t seen it."

"Antonio, I know that me hiding the fact that I went to the rooftop makes you suspicious, but why would I lie to you? Even if Brady really jumped because of me, why would I take his bracelet? Am I supposed to keep it as a souvenir? That day, after he yelled at me, I was so scared that I just left. Whatever happened after that, I have no idea! So, when I heard about his fall, I was just as shocked!"

Serene's eyes brimmed with shock, tears clinging to her face, while her lips trembled uncontrollably. She struggled to suppress her grievances, her voice barely a whisper.

"I understand your desire to seek the truth for Sarah, but I can't bear the weight of your relationship problems. It's unfair to solely blame me like this. Being disabled, I couldn't harm anyone. Or is it my disability that makes you doubt me? Antonio, remember my leg was injured saving you. I'm already in immense pain."

Serene was becoming somewhat hysterical.

Seeing her state, Antonio refrained from pressing her further; he just wanted to bluff Serene like before, and seeing her react this way didn’t seem fake.

The room felt inexplicably hot, adding to Antonio's irritation. He loosened his tie and noticed the cup of warm water on the table. "Let's take it easy, no need to get all worked up. I was just asking. Here, have some water and let's tone down the shouting; it's starting to give me a headache."

Not knowing what else to say, Serene silently took the cup of water and sipped quietly, her gaze lowered, intently staring at her legs.

"You can choose not to believe me; you can even ask the police to investigate—I don't care. As long as you and Sarah are happy. It was her brother who had the accident, I can understand your feelings.”

Antonio's irritation grew as he listened to Serene and noticed her injured leg, intensifying his frustration.

Glancing at his watch, he hesitated, unsure whether to trust Serene's words. Yet, there were no signs of a struggle on the rooftop.

Checking his watch once more, Antonio realized it was nearly time for his next appointment. He attempted to stand but was unexpectedly struck by a bout of dizziness, causing him to slump back into his seat. Gripping his temple, he shook his head forcefully, feeling a sudden weakness engulfing his body.

"Antonio, what's wrong?" Serene approached in her wheelchair, her face marked with panic.

Antonio braced himself against the table, realizing that his vision was blurring and his mind felt fuzzy as if he might pass out at any moment.

"Antonio, are you drunk and haven't sobered up yet?" Serene asked while clasping Antonio's hand.

Antonio tried to push her away but found he couldn't move. The next second, he collapsed onto the bed and completely blacked out!

"Antonio? Antonio?" Serene called his name a couple more times. When there was no response, she exhaled in relief, slowly stood up, and sat beside Antonio.

She embraced Antonio, coiling around him like a serpent, her pale fingers caressing his cheek over and over.

"Antonio, I've finally waited for this day..."
