Chapter 66 I Want You to Carry Me
The next day, Sarah was up at the crack of dawn. She barely slept a wink, her head buzzing with yesterday's drama and Antonio's words.
Skipping breakfast, she made a beeline for Brady's place and then snuck him over to Michael's house.
Sarah rang the doorbell and whispered to Brady, "Dude, keep your cool."
Brady was about to ask what she meant when the door swung open, and a tiny figure darted out.
"Mommy, you're here!"
Mommy?
Brady's jaw dropped as the little guy leaped into Sarah's arms—it was a kid!
Wait, what the heck?
Ethan looked up at the person next to Sarah, and his big eyes lit up. "Brady!"
He'd seen Brady's photos a bunch of times, so he knew him right away.
Finally, he met Brady!
Ethan was over the moon and the next second, he rushed to Brady and gave him a big hug.
It took Brady a hot minute to snap out of it. Looking at Ethan in his arms, he asked, "Sarah, is this your kid?"
Sarah smiled, a smile Brady had never seen before, one filled with motherly love. "Yep, Brady, let's go inside and chat."
Inside, Michael, playing the host, hustled to the kitchen to grab drinks and snacks for them.
Sarah, Brady, and Ethan plopped down on the living room couch. Brady hadn't taken his eyes off Ethan since they walked in.
Ethan had Sarah's features, but that serious little face was a dead ringer for Antonio's!
Brady's emotions were all over the place. After a brief moment of joy, a deep worry hit him. "Sarah, this kid is..."
"That's right." Sarah saw through Brady's thoughts and didn't deny it. "Ethan is the second child. I also have a little daughter, Harper, who's now at Antonio's place, and another older son at our home abroad. They're triplets."
"What?" Brady's heart skipped a beat. "You said the kid is at Antonio's place? What's going on!"
Talking about Harper, Sarah looked helpless. "It's a long story, but don't sweat it, she's good. Antonio's clueless about her being his kid and the triplets."
"But how long can you keep this up? Antonio will catch on sooner or later." Brady couldn't help but worry.
Even though he hadn't met Harper, since they were triplets, they should look pretty similar. If Antonio saw Harper, who looked so much like him, he'd definitely get suspicious. With Antonio's resources, if he decided to dig, he'd find out the truth in no time.
Ethan, sitting nearby, naturally had this worry too. His young face showed a seriousness beyond his years.
According to the original plan, they could now take Brady back to their home abroad, but now that they had finally rescued Brady, Harper had turned against them.
It was all because of that sly Antonio. What tricks did he use to take Harper away?
Sarah looked just as worried. Thinking about Harper, who didn't want to leave Antonio, she sighed. "I get it. I'll get the kids out of here ASAP."
She knew this secret wouldn't stay hidden for long. Once Antonio found out, he'd definitely make a move. But whether he wanted to hurt the kids or take them away, she wouldn't let it happen!
But right now, the big issue was Harper, who, despite everything, was soaking up the "fatherly love" at Antonio's place.
"I want egg tarts." The sweet, childish voice echoed in the study. Harper's tiny, chubby hand rested on Antonio's arm, shaking it a bit, her big, watery eyes filled with pure joy.
Antonio was reading a document. He glanced down at the small hand on his arm, so tiny, and it hit a soft spot in his heart. Looking at Harper beside him, his eyes softened, and a faint smile crept onto his lips.
From the moment Harper showed up laughing at the study door, he figured she wasn't just there to see him.
With a gentle look in his eyes, Antonio patiently said, "I've told you, if you want something, just ask the maids to get it."
Even he hadn't noticed that he, usually so cold to others, had softened his tone when talking to Harper.
Harper took another step closer, resting her elbows on his leg, her chin in her hands, and sweetly said, "Egg tarts are only good piping hot from the oven. They lose their crunch if the maids fetch them. Let's hit the shop for some fresh ones. Can you drive me there?"
Her real goal was to spend a fun day with Antonio and, while Sarah wasn't around, sneak out to eat more sweets.
Antonio stared into Harper's big eyes without saying a word.
Harper saw his hesitation and quickly added, "Come on, please take me out. You're the best."
She grabbed his arm with both hands and shook it hard, pouting her lips, looking all pitiful.
Pouting was her secret weapon, and no one had ever been able to resist it. She didn't believe Antonio could hold out!
Antonio, seeing the anticipation and request in Harper's eyes and hearing her sweet voice, set aside the documents in his hand. His eyes held a hint of helplessness and a touch of indulgence as he said, "Alright, I'll take you."
"Yay! I knew you were the best!" Harper's eyes curved with a smile, not forgetting to butter him up, then stretched out her arms. "I want you to carry me!"
Antonio paused slightly as he got up, a bit of confusion in his eyes. Strange, Harper had been super clingy these past few days, totally different from her cold attitude before.
How could a kid's attitude change so fast, without even a transition period?
Could it be that she had a split personality?
