Chapter 969 Divorce

Timothy glanced at her hand gripping his, his voice cold and sharp. "That guy's bad news, and you still went drinking with him? Are you planning to count the money for him after he scams you? Seriously?"

He couldn't even imagine what might have happened if John hadn't run into them by chance.

This woman...she really didn't have a lick of sense!

Mary shrank back, scared by his harsh tone. "I... I'm not that dumb. I didn't tell him my real name."

Timothy stared at the top of her head, taking a couple of deep breaths. He felt it was pointless to argue with a drunk. "Let's go home first. We'll talk when you're sober."

Mary knew she was in the wrong and didn't argue. She meekly followed him back home.

She had really drunk a lot and fell asleep as soon as she hit the bed.

When she woke up, it was already noon the next day. Her head was pounding, and countless scenes from the previous night flashed through her mind.

So... she must have caused Timothy a lot of trouble, right?

She should apologize properly.

Mary bit her lip, hesitating for a while before slowly getting out of bed, tidying herself up, and walking into the living room.

She thought Timothy would have gone back to the hospital by now, but to her surprise, he was sitting on the couch, dressed casually, reading a book.

Her heart started to race as she slowly walked over.

"Um... about last night, I'm sorry."

Timothy looked up, his cold eyes staring at her for a few seconds. "Sorry for what?"

Sorry for hugging him and calling out another man's name, or sorry for going out drinking alone with that guy, almost getting taken advantage of?

Mary fidgeted with her fingers, her voice very low. "I shouldn't have troubled you... made you reveal your family's identity."

"..."

So, she figured that out after a night's sleep?

Or had she already forgotten calling him "brother" while hugging him?

Timothy's face grew darker, his voice harsh and unrestrained. "Apologizing doesn't fix everything. You need to think about whether you can handle the consequences of your actions. If you can't, then eat more walnuts to grow some brains! Stop making people worry about you! You keep saying you're an adult, but what have you actually accomplished?!"

Mary was stunned by his outburst, tears welling up in her eyes.

What did he mean by that?

Did he think she was just a burden?

But... maybe he was right.

She was the wife he didn't want to marry, and all she seemed to do was cause trouble for him, bringing no benefits and only more problems.

So Timothy...

He must be tired of it all.

Mary was tired too.

She watched him every day, but she couldn't have him. She could only watch as he pined for someone else... There was an insurmountable gap between them.

So what was the point of continuing?

They wouldn't make it to the end.

Breaking up was just a matter of time.

"I'm sorry... for worrying you again."

Mary felt a sudden, painful emptiness in her heart, making it hard to breathe. But she mustered the courage to speak. "I know I've always been a burden to you. Maybe... we should get a divorce."

The last few words seemed to take all her strength, but once she said them, she felt a bit relieved.

Letting him go was also letting herself go.

Timothy didn't say anything. The lamp cast a shadow over his tall figure, making him look deep and unreadable.

He stared at her, his dark eyes like a black hole.

So, a night of drinking had brought out all her thoughts?

Divorce...

This woman had never let go of the man in her heart. She was still waiting for him to come back!

Timothy's anger flared up. He slammed the book shut and took a few steps to stand in front of Mary, gripping her shoulders and pinning her against the wall.

"What, you think you're all healed up now and ready to ditch me?"

His deep, magnetic voice was right by her ear, making Mary's heart tremble.

"No... no."

"No? Then what is it?"

Timothy's eyes were red, his mind filled with the image of her hugging him and calling out another man's name, something she had never done with him.

"You think my marriage is just a stepping stone for you? Huh? Something you can use and then discard? Speak!"

Mary had never seen him so furious. She instinctively wanted to run, but his strong chest held her firmly in place. There was no escape.

She could only force herself to speak, her heart pounding.

"Then... what do you want?"

He didn't have any feelings for her, so what was the point of continuing?

"What do I want?"

Timothy looked at her face, so close, with its innocent and naive expression. His possessiveness surged to its peak.

"You want a divorce? Fine. Give me a child, and I'll let you go."

Mary blinked, stunned.

He... he actually said that?

The man's eyes grew deeper, as if to confirm his words. He slowly leaned in, almost kissing her.

His hot breath made her feel tingly.

"How about it? Huh? Give me a child."

His husky voice was almost hypnotic.

Mary was stunned for a moment, then anger flared up. She pushed him away forcefully. "What do you take me for?! A baby-making machine?!"

Timothy stayed in his original position, her angry words and the way she had dodged his almost-kiss ringing in his ears.

Mary...

She really didn't want to be close to him?

"I just think that since we don't have feelings for each other, there's no point in continuing this marriage. I won't give you a child. A child should be a product of love, not...!"

She didn't finish, but Timothy got the message.

She didn't love him, so she didn't want to be close to him, let alone have his child.

Timothy turned his gaze away, his dark eyes like a wolf ready to pounce. His voice was harsh and unrestrained. "Heh, you think I would actually be interested in you?"

Mary bit her lip, not saying a word.

The man straightened his clothes, regaining his cold demeanor. "Forget about divorce. Do whatever you want with the rest, I don't care!"

With that, he stormed out, slamming the door behind him.

The loud bang made the walls seem to shake.

Mary stared at the door, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably.
