Chapter 458 The Fall

Chaos had already erupted all around, as several security guards rushed over. "Someone has jumped off the building! Get them to the ER, quick!!!"

This cry for emergency snapped Sarah back to reality. Trembling, she took out her phone and hastily called the police.

"I am in the hospital, my brother fell from a high place, and now his condition is critical..."

Sarah slumped to the ground, looking up in despair towards the high above, where the distant rooftop's railing was the only thing visible.

The dazzling sunlight obscured her vision. At that moment, the golden rays were no longer warm but filled with endless sorrow...

Brady had already been placed on a stretcher, and passersby were helping Sarah to her feet.

Sarah tried to approach Brady but was stopped by the security guards. "Miss, please do not disrupt the scene. All bystanders need to leave immediately."

"I'm his sister... L-Let me through... A-And please protect the scene… Don't let anyone else come close!! Also, send someone to the rooftop immediately! My brother could have fallen from there... Something must have happened up there... Please save him, I beg you..."

Sarah was sobbing uncontrollably, her words barely coherent.

But she was convinced that there was something fishy about her brother's fall!!

This was the hospital's inpatient building, with specialized wards on each floor. If Brady didn't need to visit any patients here, why would he be there?

Suddenly, a thought flashed through Sarah's mind.

'A few days ago, Brady said he was not feeling well and had to go to the hospital for a checkup. Could… he have gotten some serious illness?'

The security guard reassured her, "Okay, we've already sent someone over. Don't worry, we will definitely investigate this thoroughly."

Sarah nodded blankly, then staggered towards the emergency room with shaky steps.

A moment later, a doctor came out of the operating room.

"Ms. Miller, right? The patient is in critical condition, but we will do everything we can to save him. Fortunately, he was slowed down by the protective netting on the outside of the building when he fell, so there's still a chance of survival. As a family member, you need to stay strong. However, we cannot guarantee what the final outcome will be."

"Okay! Doctor, I'm entrusting this to you... As long as you can save my brother's life, nothing else matters. Please, doctor, save my brother."

Sarah trembled as she clutched the doctor, pleading repeatedly, wishing she could take Brady's place in the operating room—the person she had relied on most since childhood...

"Ms. Miller, rest assured, we will do our utmost."

The doctor looked at Sarah with a touch of sorrow, "But Ms. Miller, you must also be prepared mentally. Even if we manage to save Mr. Miller's life, he may end up in a vegetative state."

Sarah's voice trembled. "If that is the best possible outcome, then I... I can accept it."

It wasn't about being able to accept it—it was about having no choice but to accept it.

The doctor didn't say anything more and re-entered the operating room. The light inside stayed on, with nurses going in and out, anxiety written on every face.

Sarah sat on a chair outside the operating room, staring at her hands as if she could see the continuous flow of blood on them, envisioning Brady's blood that couldn't be stopped...

While Brady was undergoing surgery, the police quickly arrived.

"Are you Ms. Sarah Miller? Did you report the incident?"

Sarah nodded. "Officer, did my brother fall from the rooftop?"

"Yes, after surveying the rooftop, we preliminarily concluded that your brother committed suicide."

"That can't be! Absolutely not! Why would my brother commit suicide?! He was supposed to have dinner with me tonight! Officer, please investigate further... My brother is optimistic and had no troubles in his life! How could he possibly commit suicide?!"

Sarah was adamant; it was unthinkable that her brother would do such a thing...

The police were used to dealing with such incidents, and though they were sympathetic, they also had to confront the facts.

"Ms. Miller, I understand that this is difficult to accept in such a short time, and rest assured, we haven't come to a definitive conclusion about the incident yet. We will conduct a thorough investigation and provide you with answers, and we ask for your cooperation with our work."

Sarah wiped away her tears and took a deep breath. "Feel free to ask me anything; I'm clear about my brother's matters.

"Also, before the incident, my brother had called me, but it rang only twice before hanging up. When I tried to call back, no one picked up, and he didn't reply to my messages... That's also a point of suspicion!"

The officer nodded in understanding. "Okay, we found Mr. Miller's phone on the ground below the hospital wing. The phone was completely shattered, and a preliminary data recovery shows that the only person he contacted was you. He also visited customs this morning. Do you know what he went there to retrieve?"

"Customs... It should be the gift my brother was going to give me, a bracelet." Sarah bit her lip. "Officer, that bracelet wasn't found on my brother. Was it found on the ground below the inpatient building?"

"Not at the moment. Also, do you know why Mr. Miller came to the hospital?"

"I don't know... I really don't know. According to the original plan, after he got the bracelet, he was supposed to come to me. Why did he suddenly detour to the hospital?" Sarah nervously clutched at her hair. "However, he was sick a little while ago and had been to the hospital for treatment. It could be possible that he was here for a follow-up... but it's unlikely."

The officer took notes. "We've checked the rooftop cameras, and they only show your brother going up there by himself. And the hospital doesn't have any records of his follow-up appointments, so... the likelihood of suicide is still quite high.

"We'll continue to investigate. Thank you for your cooperation, and please contact us if there's anything else."

After the police departed, Sarah sat alone outside the operating room door, reflecting on the events of the past few days.

Brady couldn't have been concealing anything significant from her. He didn't have many friends in this city.

Furthermore, Brady had visited customs earlier in the day to collect a gift for her. How could the bracelet simply disappear?

Sarah was familiar with her brother's character. Even if he had faced something he couldn't handle, he would have ensured the bracelet reached her...

Staring at the operating room door, Sarah had long since run out of tears. She murmured to herself, "Brady, what on earth happened to you?"
