Chapter 59 Wanting Sarah to Understand Antonio's Feelings
In the evening, Harper swung by to check on Sarah. The moment she walked in, she could tell Sarah was feeling off.
Even a total idiot could figure out Antonio had ticked Sarah off again.
She thought, 'Antonio's thick as a brick. I already told him to sweet-talk Sarah, but did he listen? Nope.'
Harper let out a helpless sigh, then plastered on a sweet smile, walked over, and asked, "Hey, Mom, still hurting? Feeling any better?"
Sarah glanced at Harper and immediately frowned, suspicion all over her face.
'What's Harper scheming now?'
Seeing the questioning look in Sarah's eyes, Harper flashed a grin, showing off her little white teeth, then hopped onto the bed and started massaging Sarah's legs like a good kid.
"Mom, must be boring cooped up here all day. When you're up for it, let's hit the town for some fun. Heard you checked out the zoo last weekend. I wanna go too."Harper pouted a bit as she spoke.
She wanted to hit the zoo with Antonio too. Why did Ethan get all the luck?
Sarah looked at Harper's chubby little hand on her leg and then noticed the disappointment on her face. Her expression darkened a bit. After a moment, she asked Harper quietly, "Harper, got anything you wanna tell me?"
Harper's big eyes darted away, playing dumb. "Nope, just thought you might be lonely, so I came to hang out."
But Sarah wasn't letting it slide this time. She pressed on, "Alright, Harper, you knew the surveillance wasn't in Antonio's room, didn't you? Why'd you lie to me?"
Even though Sarah's tone wasn't harsh, it made Harper's little hand freeze, her heart racing.
Realizing she couldn't dodge it anymore, she decided to spill the beans.
She peeked at Sarah, then explained in a small voice, "I was trying to help you, honestly. I went to Dad's room to look for the surveillance and saw two dolls. Remember them? You made them. Dad had them on his nightstand. I thought he still liked you. So, I said the surveillance was in Dad's room to get you there, hoping you'd see the dolls and get what Dad feels."
Listening to this, Sarah got Harper's intention, but...
"I didn't see any dolls." She remembered those dolls; she did make them. But back then, she was naive and easily fooled by Antonio.
What difference did it make that he kept the doll? It didn't change the fact that he was a jerk; it was all just a fake show of affection.
Seeing Sarah's reaction, Harper's little face scrunched up in disappointment, and she hung her head like she'd done something wrong.
Sarah felt a pang in her heart, gently rubbing Harper's fluffy little head. "I know you mean well, but Harper, you gotta trust my judgment."
She knew Harper's heart still leaned towards Antonio, but Sarah didn't say anything more, nor did she blame Harper.
After all, Harper's always been sweet and craving more love, especially from a dad. So, it was normal for her to be fooled by Antonio's act. Wasn't Sarah the same back then?
But this stalemate wasn't helping anyone. Brady was still stuck at the police station, and things were looking grim. The only evidence that could clear Brady's name was in Antonio's hands.
She was at a disadvantage now. Going head-to-head with Antonio wouldn't do her any good.
Plus, Antonio was unpredictable. Even though he promised to give her the surveillance tape once she recovered, what if he changed his mind and destroyed it?
After thinking it over, Sarah finally decided to have a serious talk with Antonio.
That evening, she went alone to the study, hesitating at the door. The thought of facing Antonio alone made her instinctively want to back off, but she had to remind herself that she had to do this for Brady's sake!
Sarah took a deep breath and knocked on the study door.
Inside, only a floor lamp was on, casting a dim light.
Antonio sat behind the desk, holding a wine glass. As his fingers moved, the wine swirled slightly, catching the light.
Half of his face was hidden in the shadows, making his features look sharper. The commanding presence he had during the day now seemed tinged with a bit of sadness.
Hearing the knock, he responded, "Come in."
He thought it was a maid, but to his surprise, it was Sarah.
Antonio's thin lips pressed together as he put down the wine glass, his long eyes watching Sarah as she walked towards him.
"What are you doing here?" Even Antonio didn't realize his voice had a bit of a rasp, like he was afraid the Sarah in front of him would get scared and run off again.
Sarah pretended to be calm, her eyes downcast, hiding her emotions. After a few seconds, she said in a soft voice, "I need to talk to you about something."
