Chapter 606 I Would Take Care of Her
He wasn't sure.
But what he was sure of was that since he had developed feelings for Sarah, he needed to postpone his engagement with Isabella to be fair to everyone involved.
The sky outside darkened, and the temperature in the cave rapidly dropped. Benjamin switched on his phone's flashlight to brighten the atmosphere.
However, the woman in his arms had fallen asleep again, her fever burning up, which heightened Benjamin's anxiety.
But quite some time had passed, and the rescue team should be arriving soon. Benjamin carefully held Sarah in his arms, occasionally using his cold hands to cool her forehead.
After what felt like an eternity, they finally heard voices calling from above.
A voice called out, "Sarah!"
Ethan yelled, "Where are you?"
Ethan, holding James's hand, shouted through his tears.
The rescue team searched around, and Isabella was there, too, holding a flashlight and calling out, "Benjamin! Can you hear me?"
The shouts echoed above, and Benjamin was overjoyed. He looked down at the woman in his arms and said, "Sarah, you're saved."
He quickly stood up and responded, "Daniel! We're in the cave below."
He then set his phone's flashlight to flash mode and held it above his head.
Soon, they heard a shout from above, "Over here! We found them, and they're over here."
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief and quickly followed the flashing light. The well-trained rescue team soon used ropes to bring the two people below to safety.
After all the commotion, Sarah woke up, but her mind was still foggy, and her eyelids felt heavy. She had no strength left and let James support her.
James called out to her, "Sarah."
Ethan rushed over and saw Sarah's weak state, feeling heartbroken. He asked, "Benjamin, what happened to her?"
Benjamin untied the rope from himself and took Sarah from James, holding her hand tightly. He replied, "She's sick. We need to get her to a hospital."
James, equally worried, said, "The downtown is too far. Given Sarah's current condition, we need to lower her temperature immediately. The hotel at the mountain resort has a fully equipped medical station. Let's go back there first."
"Yes." Benjamin nodded, "You take care of Ethan."
James promptly responded, "Got it."
This interaction, with one giving the orders and the other complying, seemed so natural, as if they had done it many times before.
Isabella had been standing nearby, anxiously observing Benjamin. She observed all his actions, noting how he seemed to ignore her presence entirely. He was carefully protecting Sarah. This sight was like a sharp knife stabbing Isabella's eyes.
Even now, their hands remained tightly clasped.
Her fingernails dug into her palms as she swallowed all her resentment, forcing a smile, and asked, "Benjamin, are you hurt?"
Benjamin turned his head at her voice, glancing at her indifferently. He replied, "I'm fine. Sarah's not doing well. We'll talk later."
With that, he turned away, supporting Sarah as they left.
"James, let's go quickly, too," Ethan urged, anxious, also pulled James along to follow.
Isabella stood there, watching their figures grow distant, a fire of anger burning inside her. The feeling of resentment turned into a beast, threatening to consume her.
Why?
Why did Benjamin care so much about Sarah?
They had only known each other for a few days. She was supposed to be his fiancé. Sarah had already been married and was a mother of two.
Did he really not mind?
Isabella clenched her teeth so tightly they almost cracked. Everything had changed since Sarah appeared.
"Isabella?" A rescue worker, having packed up, politely reminded her, "We should head down the mountain, too. It's cold at night, and there are many wild animals."
Isabella closed her eyes, took a few deep breaths, composed herself, and then joined the rescue team to descend the mountain.
At the hotel, the doctors who had been contacted in advance were waiting.
Benjamin approached them, his expression serious. He informed them, "She has a fever, probably from a cold and shock. She's pregnant, so please take care of her."
The doctors said, "Understood. Family members, please wait outside."
The door to the medical room closed, and Benjamin felt tense. But at least they were safe now, and Sarah was strong; she should be fine.
"Benjamin," Ethan came over, and asked, "Will she be okay?"
"She'll be fine." Benjamin pulled him close, comforting him, "It's just a mild fever. She'll be all right."
They waited quietly together outside the door.
Soon, Isabella arrived. She immediately noticed Benjamin holding the child, softly comforting him. If she were an outsider, she would find the scene heartwarming.
But she wasn't. She was Benjamin's legitimate fiancé, the one who would bear his children. The child in front of her had nothing to do with Benjamin, who was born to another woman.
Isabella's eyes showed a slight change. She took a deep breath to adjust her emotions and walked over with a smile. She inquired, "Benjamin, is Sarah all right?"
Benjamin's frown didn't ease. He replied, "I don't know yet."
His expression was indifferent, starkly contrasting with how he spoke to Sarah. Isabella's smile froze momentarily, but the man wasn't paying attention to her at all, treating her as if she were invisible, unimportant. This kind of neglect was reserved for those who didn't matter at all.
Isabella's smile almost faltered, and she gripped her bag tightly, standing woodenly to the side.
After what felt like an eternity, the doctor came out, removed his mask, and put it in his pocket. His expression was not entirely relaxed.
The doctor reported, "Benjamin, Sarah has no other issues besides the fever, but..."
The doctor continued, "But her fever has reached 39 degrees. Since she's pregnant, it's best to avoid medication. We need to lower her temperature physically to avoid affecting the baby."
The doctor finished speaking, looking around at the people at the door.
Clearly, he was waiting for someone to respond.
Ethan glanced at the tall Benjamin beside him. Worried about Sarah's condition and wanting to use this situation to his advantage, he cried out, "Doctor, don't worry. I'll take good care of my mom and help her reduce the fever."
His soft, determined voice made everyone feel for him.
James was about to speak when another cold, firm voice spoke first, "I will take care of her."
