Chapter 26 She Is Not Antonio's Wife
Sarah yanked the digital recorder from her pocket and slammed the play button like she was swatting a fly.
In a heartbeat, the room filled with the echo of their earlier convo. The living room went dead silent, everyone just listening to the playback. No one dared to speak.
Harper was doing a little victory dance in her head, totally blown away by Sarah's genius move. Classic Sarah! Now Lisa was totally cornered!
Antonio's face turned stormy, especially when he heard, "I'll beat you to death, you bastard." His eyebrows knitted together like they were having a meeting.
The rest of the recording was just a mess of fighting sounds and Lisa's nasty insults. Antonio couldn't take it anymore. "Enough!"
Sarah clicked off the recorder. The evidence was out there, plain as day. Let's see Antonio try to wriggle out of this one!
Harper sidled up to Sarah, and they shared a knowing grin before crossing their arms, ready for the drama to unfold.
Lisa bit down on her lip so hard it looked like it might bleed, her eyes darting around like a trapped animal. She was in full-on panic mode, her face as pale as a ghost.
She glanced at Antonio's face and, still trying to salvage the situation, stammered, "Antonio, they started it. I was just trying to protect Ryan, so I..."
But with the evidence out there, her excuses were as flimsy as a paper towel. The more she talked, the quieter she got.
Ryan's eyes were wide with confusion and fear, scared that Antonio might blow up, even though he hadn't done anything wrong.
Antonio saw the fear in Ryan's eyes. He closed his own, trying to keep his cool, and then looked at Lisa.
"Lisa, stop or you won't be Ryan's mother anymore!"
Hearing that, Lisa broke down, crying and begging, "Antonio, don't take Ryan away from me. He's my only son, my everything. I can't live without him!"
But Antonio was ice-cold, his eyes like glaciers.
Realizing how serious things were, she quickly changed her tune. "I... I get it. I won't come around anymore. Just let me stay with Ryan, and I'll behave."
Ryan was her world. Even if Antonio was done with her, she couldn't lose Ryan.
Antonio didn't even look at her, his voice dripping with impatience. "You can leave now."
Lisa's visit had totally backfired. She was fuming inside and shot Sarah a death glare. 'Bitch, you think you'll always get away with this?'
She looked at Ryan again, seeing him standing there, head down. Her anger flared up even more, hating herself for having such a useless kid.
Swallowing her rage, she hugged Ryan and stormed out without a backward glance.
As the dust settled, Harper watched Ryan leave, her usual smile wiped off her face. All she could think about was the way Antonio had cared for Ryan.
She could see clear as day that Antonio really cared about Ryan. The more she thought about it, the more bummed out Harper got. She turned and bolted back to her room.
Sarah knew Harper like the back of her hand. Seeing her run off, she knew Harper was upset and wanted to go after her to keep her company.
But she barely took a few steps when Antonio's voice cut through the air. "Wait."
Sarah turned to face him, not saying a word, just catching the suspicion and dissatisfaction in his eyes. "Why'd you record that?"
Sarah instinctively frowned. "What?"
Antonio locked eyes with her, his voice cold as ice. "I don't appreciate scheming women."
He knew she had planned this, whether it was showing up at his house out of the blue, sneaking into his room last night, or recording just now.
If she really was Sarah, he didn't want the once innocent Sarah to turn into someone always plotting and scheming.
Hearing this, Sarah couldn't help but sneer inwardly. Her tone was icy. "Mr. Valencia, I'm just spitting truth here. If clearing my name is shady to you, tough luck. I ain't apologizing for it. Like it or not, this is me."
Antonio probably wished everyone in the world were idiots so he could play them like puppets.
She used to be all naive and innocent, but now she had wised up. Being too innocent just got you hurt. People needed a bit of cunning.
Being in the same room with Antonio made her skin crawl. Sarah turned to head upstairs, but the next moment, Antonio grabbed her wrist. "That's not what I meant."
Antonio's voice was deep. He didn't mean to call her scheming; he just...
But Sarah didn't want to hear it. She yanked her hand back, keeping her cool. "Mr. Valencia, no need to explain. I'm just a maid here."
Hearing her words, Antonio's gaze darkened as he stared at her. "From the beginning to the end, you've always been the lady of this house."
Sarah stayed silent, just looking around at everything that was the same as five years ago. Even her favorite vase was still in its spot.
A slight ripple stirred in her heart, but thinking of Lisa and Ryan just now, and Antonio's concern for Ryan, her heart went back to being stone cold.
"Mr. Valencia, you must be joking. Isn't Ms. Randall the lady of this house?"
Maybe she felt this wasn't enough to make Antonio back off, so she added, "Stop with the confusing talk. Ms. Randall already despises me. If she catches wind of this, won't she target me? I'm just a maid. I don't want to be mistaken for your lover and mess up my life."
Hearing this, Antonio's eyes narrowed, and his grip on her wrist tightened unconsciously. "She is not my wife."
"What?"
Lisa wasn't his wife?
