Chapter 386 Is Antonio pretending to be pitiful?
At that moment, Victor couldn't help but worry.
If Sarah really divorced Antonio, would he be able to pay off his gambling debts? The amount he owed is not a small sum—it's enough for an ordinary person to live comfortably for the rest of their life.
If it wasn't for this, he wouldn't have taken up the role of being Sarah’s fake father.
Sarah's appearance suggested she didn't possess much wealth and depended on Antonio. In the event of their divorce, Sarah would likely receive a portion of their assets. However, if Antonio didn't settle his gambling debts, wouldn't all his efforts thus far be futile?
"No, I need to find a way out for myself. If these two really get divorced, having a cheap daughter like this won't be of any use. Even if I were to sell her, she wouldn't be worth much," Victor muttered.
Coincidentally, Serene called him.
"Is the voice recording you just sent me real?"
"Of course it's real." Victor snorted. "I was just with my dear daughter."
Hearing the way he called his daughter dear made Serene feel somewhat disgusted. "You really think of yourself as Sarah's real father."
"Isn't that what Ms. Jerrett instructed me to do? I've never acted before, but if I have to pretend, I need to make it believable."
Victor intentionally said this to see if he could get some money out of Serene's hand.
Serene understood what he was implying. She actually regretted involving Victor in this matter. Who could have expected him to be like an insatiable pit, accumulating one gambling debt after another?
"Thank you for your hard work. Let me know if anything comes up."
Serene didn't want to get entangled with Victor any further and intended to hang up.
"Ms. Jerrett, I've passed such important information to you. Shouldn't you give me something in return?"
They were both tied together on the same rope, so Victor, who had nothing to lose, wassn't afraid. On the other hand, if Serene didn't give him money, he would reveal everything, and he wouldn't be the one to suffer the consequences. Serene, however, was in a different position.
Serene cursed inwardly but had no choice but to act as if nothing had happened.
"Is my compensation not enough for you?" Serene smiled and pondered for a moment. "How about this, bring the recording and meet me at our usual spot."
…
With the recording in hand, Victor arrived at the restaurant where he was supposed to meet Serene according to the agreement.
Serene really despised the greasy smell of these roadside eateries. If it weren't for her fear of being recognized at a big restaurant, she would never set foot in a place like this again.
"Ms. Jerrett, I'm here." Victor's voice was loud enough to make everyone in the restaurant turn their heads towards Serene.
Fortunately, Serene was wearing a mask, and these were just ordinary people, so she wasn't worried about being recognized.
"What are you yelling about? Give me the original recording file." Serene sat disdainfully in the chair.
Looking at the greasy surface of the table, Serene couldn't help but feel nauseous.
Victor noticed Serene's princess-like attitude and silently mocked her.
"Ms. Jerrett, this is the best we can do. We can't go to Valencia Inc. to discuss this. It's not on par with your upscale dining experiences."
Serene frowned, and Victor continued, "I heard in the news that you had a car accident, but it doesn't seem like a big deal to me."
Serene took out a bank card from her bag. "Victor, focus on what you're responsible for, and don't ask about things that aren't your concern."
"I've been busy lately, so I couldn't bring a lot of money with me. You can take this $6,500 first."
Victor looked at the bank card with some disdain, "Don't tell me this $6,500 is for gambling debts. I can't even pay back the money I owe to others."
Serene knew Victor would say that, but she had already thought about how to respond on her way here.
"You still owe money to others? I even made you acknowledge me as a wealthy wife, but you still can't understand?"
Victor, despite being unkempt, was quick-witted. "What does Ms. Jerrett mean?"
Serene smiled slightly. "Just think about it. You sympathize with parents who care for their children. Sarah doesn't want to spend money on you, but she's willing to spend on her three children. Even though Ryan isn't her biological son, she treats him as if he were.
"With three children, how much money does it take Antonio to raise them? Just thinking about it is not easy."
Victor had an epiphany, and his attitude towards Serene improved. "Ms. Jerrett, you're truly wise."
"As long as we cooperate well, there will be plenty of benefits waiting for you."
Serene reached her hand out, and Victor handed her the original recording.
Serene held the recording in her hands, feeling secretly delighted.
She had already noticed that Antonio and Sarah's emotions were off during their time at the hospital.
It was nothing like how close they used to be.
The rumors on the Internet were true after all; these two were really getting a divorce.
If Victor were to fan the flames at that moment, it would certainly accelerate their divorce.
At that time, Serene wouldn't have any worries.
"Ms. Jerrett, what should I do about this? Or shall we work together on this?" Victor asked.
Serene, being a cunning person, would never meddle in this matter. "You know more people than I do."
Coincidentally, Victor's phone received another debt collection call from the casino.
Serene stood proudly. Wearing sunglasses and a face mask, she left with a hint of disdain.
…
Back at Sarah's workstation in Valencia Inc., Antonio followed her and said, "Sarah, let's discuss the collaboration with Shengjing."
Sarah had initially brushed off Antonio upon her return to the company, but now he sought to discuss something serious, compelling her attention. Gathering all the contracts about Shengjing, Sarah made her way to Antonio's office.
"I have put a lot of information here for you to review, Mr. Valencia," Sarah said, placing the documents on the desk, intending to leave.
Unexpectedly, Antonio grabbed her hand.
"I actually wanted to ask you which document contains the quotation," he clarified.
Sarah bit her lip and replied, "I marked it with blue."
"And what about the product design samples?" he asked.
"The red one," she replied.
"What about the cost and budget?" he asked.
"The green one." Sarah furrowed her brow. "I always put each type of document in separate folders of the same color. Why haven't you asked me this before?"
"Because you used to tell me," Antonio innocently looked at Sarah. "You used to be patient with me."
Sarah was somewhat at a loss for words. Was Antonio trying to play innocent with her?
