Chapter 746 Complicated Relationship
Mary suddenly felt a wave of doubt and couldn't help but sneak glances at Antonio, wondering if his face would give anything away.
Little did she know, Timothy noticed every single look.
His face got darker and darker, and the pen in his hand was on the verge of snapping.
'Why is Mary staring at him so much? Is he really that good-looking?' he fumed inside, but kept his cool on the outside. He coughed now and then, trying to get Mary's attention.
Mary was too wrapped up in her thoughts to notice!
Just then, Sarah and Antonio finished their review and looked up. "No problem. So, when can Cynthia have the surgery? Is there anything else we need to prepare, Dr. Reed?" Sarah asked.
Timothy took a deep breath, adjusted his collar, and tried to hide his emotions.
Then he suddenly asked, "Mary, when are you free?"
Mary, caught off guard, blinked in surprise. "I don't have much going on lately. Why?"
Seeing he finally had her attention, Timothy's lips curled into a slight smile. "Aren't you taking care of Cynthia? We need to check your schedule, of course."
Mary got what he meant and said, "I'm available anytime."
Only then did Timothy turn to Antonio and say, "I'll confirm the surgery plan today and arrange it as soon as possible."
"Great, thank you," Sarah said.
"Mary," Timothy said, still holding a grudge and giving Antonio a meaningful look. "Come with me to the office. I have some extra instructions for you."
Mary quickly agreed, "Okay, let's go!"
After they left, Sarah made a puzzled sound.
"If it's extra instructions, why can't we hear them too?" she asked.
She thought it was unfair to burden Mary with everything! When Sarah was about to call Mary back to take her place, Antonio had already sensed something was up and gently pulled her back, tapping her nose with a smile. "Don't you see? Dr. Reed clearly wants some alone time with Mary."
"Oh, I get it now!" Sarah suddenly realized.
Mary was gone for a while, and when she came back, her face was flushed. Sarah didn't ask what had happened.
Antonio was playing with Cynthia. Seeing that the two of them were bored, he suggested, "Why don't you two go out and grab something to eat? I'll stay here with Cynthia."
Sarah thought she should thank Mary properly, saying, "Alright, I'll bring you something to eat when we get back. Thanks for looking after Cynthia!"
Not long after they left, Antonio finished a game with Cynthia.
"You lost, you lost!" Cynthia clapped her hands, her eyes full of innocence.
Antonio's gaze softened. "Wanna play another round?"
Cynthia stared at the pieces on the table, deep in thought. She muttered to herself, her expression growing puzzled. "My cousin is better at chess than I am."
As Cynthia spoke, she suddenly seemed like a different person. Her innocent gaze dimmed as she said, "It's a pity she is no longer here."
"Cynthia?" Antonio's smile gradually faded as he looked at her.
'Is she suddenly clear-headed?' Antonio wondered.
Cynthia looked up and even smiled kindly. "It's you, huh? Sorry, but who are you?"
Antonio frowned, unsure if Cynthia was truly lucid. He quickly seized the opportunity to ask, "Cynthia, the cousin you mentioned, is it Carol?"
"Of course!" Cynthia's eyes showed a hint of nostalgia. "I only have one cousin, Carol."
"Do you know Carter?" Antonio couldn't help but feel a bit nervous, his heart racing. "Carter, Carol's good friend."
"Carter." Cynthia repeated the name, her frown deepening as if trying hard to remember something.
Then she said, "Carter. Carter and Carol are good friends."
She held her head, her voice growing quieter, as if she was falling back into pain. "Carter got married, and Carol advised her..."
Listening to her fragmented words, Antonio's heart sank.
'It seems she only has a moment of clarity,' he thought.
Asking more wouldn't yield much, but at least it confirmed that Carol and Carter were indeed friends!
He suddenly asked, "Cynthia, do you know Harold?"
Since they all knew each other, she must know Harold too!
"Harold? No, I don't know. I don't know anything!" As soon as Cynthia said the first word, she started trembling all over, curling up in fear!
Antonio, afraid she would lose control, quickly soothed her, "It's okay, don't be afraid."
He spoke softly, but his brow was tightly furrowed.
'Why would Cynthia react this way? Could Harold have some connection to Cynthia?' he couldn't help but wonder.
Antonio took a deep breath, his eyes becoming profoundly deep.
It seemed this matter was getting more and more complicated. Harold's misdeeds were probably worse than he had imagined!
When Sarah returned, Cynthia was already asleep from exhaustion.
Sarah said, "I took Mary home. You should eat now."
She took off her coat and turned to see Antonio's serious expression, clearly troubled.
"What's wrong?" She walked over, asking.
Antonio held her hand, gently rubbing it, as if it eased his inner unease.
He explained, "Cynthia was lucid for a moment earlier. I asked her two questions."
Surprised, Sarah repeated his words, "Cynthia was lucid!"
"Yes." Seeing her delighted expression, Antonio felt conflicted. "But it was only for a moment. It was probably because she used to play games with Carol, which triggered her memory."
Sarah's expression dimmed, and she asked, "What did you ask her?"
"I asked about the relationship between Carol and my mother, Carter." He paused, his long eyes narrowing slightly, and added, "And Harold."
Sarah had a bad feeling as she asked, "Then what did Cynthia say?"
Antonio shook his head and sighed silently, "She wasn't very clear, but from her reaction, Carol and Carter were definitely good friends, and..."
He added helplessly, "Cynthia probably knows Harold too. It's very likely Harold did something bad to her."
After speaking, he told Sarah about Cynthia's reaction at the time.
Then he analyzed, "Otherwise, Cynthia wouldn't be so afraid of him."
Hearing that, Sarah was a bit shocked.
It took her a while to react and ask, "So, Harold really has a messy relationship with our family?"
