Chapter 483 The Crime Scene
Brian hung up with a calm demeanor and turned his head back, his eyes carrying a hint of chill. "What else can I do? After making such a big scene at the racetrack, don't I need to wrap things up?"
Hearing this, Antonio breathed a sigh of relief and felt a little guilty. "I'm sorry, Brian; it's all Daddy's fault."
"What's the use of apologizing to me? Apologize to Mommy. When she forgives you, I will forgive you," Brian said with a frown. "I'm asking you, when will Mommy come home?"
Antonio's heart ached. Brian's question nearly broke his composure. He wished more than anyone for Sarah to come back so they could live happily and carefreely as before.
"Say something!" Brian's frown deepened. "You haven't gotten Mommy's forgiveness yet, have you?"
Antonio managed a weak smile. "How could that be? Mommy is at the hospital taking care of Uncle Brady. She can’t come back for the time being, so she asked me to come back and take care of you all. Go call the others out for dinner."
Brian nodded without asking further and turned his face away, feeling somewhat uneasy. He knew that both Sarah and Antonio were pretending, acting as if nothing had happened...
…
Late at night, Sarah lay in the hospital bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Brady was still deep in sleep, and the ward was eerily quiet except for the sound of the monitoring machines.
Moonlight silently spilled into the ward through the glass window. Sarah, gazing at the ceiling, felt her mind in complete disarray, unable to sort out her thoughts.
Everything seemed to be moving in an unpredictable direction, as if it was going to pierce through one's heart, suffocatingly digging it out from within.
She sat up from the bed and let out a deep sigh. Since she couldn't sleep, it was better not to try. The more she lay there, the more annoyed she felt.
Sarah got up to tuck Brady in and checked all the medical equipment before sitting by the window and looking out into the night. As she gazed at the bright and cold moonlight, Kevins image suddenly flashed through her mind. It had been a long time since she had seen him.
With everything that had been going on, she wondered how Kevin was doing. The time she spent with him was a feeling Sarah had never experienced before. It was like a true parent-child affection, spreading pure and genuine emotions within her. After all, Kevin truly treated her like a daughter, and she had come to see him as a father figure.
She had heard from the nurse that Kevin didn't sleep well at night, often having nightmares even while comatose and frequently experiencing palpitations.
With this in mind, Sarah also stood up and quietly left the room. The corridor, situated on the VIP floor, appeared even more deserted in the nighttime. Sarah found it surprising that the nurse's station was also unoccupied.
But she didn't pay much attention, assuming the nurse had gone to prepare medication or was busy with other tasks. After all, there were only two or three patients on the entire floor, none of whom needed special care at night.
Sarah slowly walked towards Kevin's ward, intending to take a quick look and return. The two wards were not far apart, with a fire corridor and an elevator hall in between.
As Sarah was walking towards the ward, she suddenly saw a person in a nurse's uniform coming out of the fire corridor. The dim lighting at night and the quiet hallway made the sudden appearance of someone startling.
She was near the nurse's station, with a wall conveniently blocking her figure from view, so the nurse did not notice her. Sarah steadied her heart and noticed that the nurse was heading towards Kevin's room.
She was puzzled. It was late. Was there a need for a physical examination for Kevin at this time?
Sarah had a strong rapport with the nurse responsible for Kevin's care and was well acquainted with his daily treatment and rehabilitation schedule. There had been no mention of treatments in the middle of the night.
She looked closely and realized that the nurse had an unfamiliar face; she had never seen this person in the VIP section. How could a new person be assigned to take care of an important patient like Kevin, especially in the middle of the night?
And then Sarah was even more shocked to discover that the nurse was clearly a man!
Instinctively holding her breath, she watched as the male nurse withdrew a syringe from his pocket, filled it to the brim, and administered the contents into Kevin's IV. The medication coursed through the drip into his body. Kevin, who had been sleeping soundly, abruptly began to grow restless, his limbs flailing silently on the bed.
This scene was beyond Sarah's expectations, and she gasped noiselessly, stepping back a few paces. But perhaps the man was too alert and suddenly looked in her direction.
Seeing this, Sarah turned and ran! Fortunately, she was wearing soft-soled shoes and made no sound!
She was afraid that the man might have accomplices and didn't dare to take the risk, so she quickly ran to the trash can by the nurse's station and squatted down.
The trash can was for medical waste, tall enough to completely hide Sarah's figure behind it.
She clutched her mouth tightly, just as she had before, shrinking entirely behind the trash can, not daring to show even a sliver of herself.
The man's footsteps grew closer, and Sarah's breathing became even more faint.
She had no idea who this person was or what his intentions might be. However, Kevin’s reaction after receiving the medication had clearly shown that this man was definitely up to no good!
Sarah's heart pounded wildly, her thoughts racing.
No wonder Kevin's condition hadn't improved at all over such a long period but had instead grown worse, and now he was even at risk of cardiac arrest at any moment!
It seemed that someone was definitely meddling behind the scenes!
Who could it be, and what was their purpose in harming Kevin?
For the sake of the J&K Group?
The hospital was eerily quiet at night, and Sarah could distinctly hear the man's footsteps drawing nearer. However, they seemed to grow lighter, akin to a predatory beast stalking its prey...
