Chapter 943 Overflowing Maternal Love
Antonio wrapped his arm around her waist, lifted her up slightly, and planted a firm kiss on her lips. "Now that's more like it."
The two of them helped the orphanage finish the event, and by the time they got home, it was already dark.
Sarah felt tired but fulfilled, maybe because meeting Nia had soothed her soul.
Nia was indeed incredibly adorable.
As Sarah stepped out of the shower, her phone rang. To her surprise, it was Bob again.
She had blocked Bob on Facebook, so he resorted to texting her.
The message contained several photos of Nia—playing, drinking milk, and sleeping.
Sarah stared at the photos, her vision blurring without her realizing it.
This Nia...
She was truly adorable.
Every little movement tugged at Sarah's heartstrings, stirring her emotions.
After a while, Bob sent another message, saying that Nia had been clutching the necklace Sarah gave her and refused to let go, even while sleeping.
Sarah couldn't help but smile tenderly. After a moment's thought, she replied.
[She's really cute, but try to take the necklace away. Baby skin is delicate; be careful not to scratch her.]
Bob felt a sudden rush of emotion as he read her message. He immediately called her. "But she won't let go. Do you have any ideas, Sarah?"
"Maybe... try swapping it with another toy?" Sarah suggested, worried that the necklace she had given might hurt the baby. "Or wait until she's asleep and then take it away."
"She hasn't finished her milk. She just spit up a little."
"Why did she spit up?"
"Probably caught a bit of a chill today, but the pediatrician said it's normal. Nothing serious, don't worry."
Sarah sighed in relief. "That's good to hear."
She couldn't quite explain the sudden surge of maternal instinct she felt.
But the moment she heard Nia wasn't feeling well, her heart clenched, and she found herself chatting with Bob for a while.
What Sarah didn't expect was to dream about Eden that night.
In her dream, little Eden had come out of the incubator, his face chubby and incredibly cute.
"Eden, it's Mommy." Sarah murmured.
And in the dream, Eden's face was Nia's.
She couldn't help but hold her tightly, crying and laughing. "I finally get to see you, my darling. You're so adorable now!"
Eden clung to her, just like Nia, holding onto her necklace.
That innocent, pure smile was etched deeply in her mind, filling her with a sense of happiness that wouldn't fade.
Sarah slept better than she had in a long time. When she woke up the next morning, she instinctively reached out beside her. "Eden..."
After a moment, her expression froze.
There was no Eden.
It was just a dream.
Sarah stared blankly at the ceiling, feeling an overwhelming sense of emptiness. Perhaps the dream had been too blissful, making the reality feel all the more desolate.
But unfortunately, Nia wouldn't be her child.
Still, thanks to Nia, the missing piece in her heart felt a bit more complete. It was a kind of fate, she supposed.
Downstairs, Ethan was nervously glancing up, whispering, "Dad... are we really not going to tell Mom?"
Today it was the kindergarten's anniversary event, with parent-child activities.
But Antonio and Sofia had decided not to tell Mom.
Antonio finished packing and walked over, ruffling Ethan's hair. "Yeah, Mom hasn't been sleeping well lately. Let's let her rest a bit more. I'll go with you."
Sarah's condition had just stabilized. If she attended such an event, it might bring back painful memories.
"Okay." Harper, understanding, held Ethan's hand and whispered, "Let's go quickly. We can play with Mom when we get back."
Brian had to go to work, and Sofia was responsible for taking Ryan to school.
This left Sarah alone at home.
When she came downstairs, only the housekeeper was cleaning the living room.
"Mrs. Valencia, you're awake? Mr. Valencia went out and didn't want to disturb you so you could rest more."
Sarah nodded, about to ask something when her phone rang again. She looked down...
It was Bob again.
She intended to ignore the call but remembered Nia's spit-up incident from the previous night and decided to ask about it.
"Hello."
As soon as she spoke, Bob's anxious voice came through.
"Sarah... are you busy right now? I'm really sorry to bother you so early, but Nia caught a chill yesterday and spit up a lot. She's been crying non-stop. Could you please come and help me with her?"
Even through the phone, the chaos on the other end was palpable, accompanied by the baby's relentless crying.
Sarah's brow furrowed with concern. "Have you seen a doctor?"
"The doctor has already checked her... but she's crying so much her voice is hoarse. No one can calm her down!"
Bob's voice fluctuated, likely because he was trying to soothe the baby.
"Sarah... could you please come over? I can't think of anyone else who can calm her down. She only likes you. She's still holding onto your necklace. I'm really at my wit's end!"
Sarah's heart raced. "But..."
Logically, she should be keeping her distance from Bob.
"Sarah... as a friend, could you help me out? You should see Nia for yourself. Can you accept my Facebook friend request?"
After accepting, Bob immediately started a video call.
Sarah, eager to check on Nia, quickly answered.
Nia's face was red from crying, and the sound alone was heartbreaking.
"Sarah, look..."
Bob pointed the camera at Nia's little hand. "She doesn't want any other toy, just your necklace. She really likes you. Can you come and try to calm her down? If she keeps crying, she'll lose her voice."
"Yes, Ms. Miller."
The person speaking now was wearing a white coat, likely the family doctor.
"Such a young child often develops a psychological attachment to a person or object. She's holding onto your necklace, probably hoping you'll be there when she's uncomfortable. You should come and see her..."
Sarah barely registered their words. Her mind was filled with the image of the crying little girl.
She bit her lip and finally agreed.
"Alright... send me the address. I'll be there soon."
No matter what, Nia was innocent.
And this child, who seemed to have a special connection with her, was someone Sarah couldn't bear to refuse.
She grabbed her car keys and headed out, connecting her phone to the car's Bluetooth, intending to call Antonio.
The phone rang until it went to voicemail, but no one answered.
