Chapter 372 Unable to Stand Up for the Rest of Her Life?
Antonio recounted last night's events. "When the accident happened yesterday, she shielded me, so I only suffered a mild concussion. The doctor said her leg was fractured from saving me."
Antonio felt both grateful and helpless. He felt helpless because the situation wouldn't have escalated to this extent if Serene hadn't moved. Maybe, neither of them would have had been injured.
But he was also truly grateful. After all, when someone was willing to sacrifice themselves in a critical moment, one couldn't ignore their kindness.
Sarah felt complicated inside, sensing that something was off about this situation.
But there was indeed a heavy rainstorm yesterday, a natural disaster that no one could control. Serene had saved Antonio, and regardless, she still deserved gratitude.
However, there was still a discomfort in her heart.
Just as she was thinking about it, Serene approached them.
"Sarah, you're here. Now I feel relieved," Serene greeted first, but her eyes were slightly red, and her expression lacked energy.
With a grateful heart, Sarah returned the greeting politely and asked, "Ms. Jerrett, what happened? Why does it seem like you've been crying?"
Antonio also noticed something was wrong with Serene. She was perfectly fine when they left earlier, so what happened now?
Serene bit her lip and replied, "There's nothing wrong. Thank you for your concern."
Her voice became hoarse as she spoke, and tears streamed down her cheeks.
No matter how one looked at it, she didn't seem fine at all.
The uncomfortable feeling in Sarah's heart grew stronger. "Ms. Jerrett, if there's anything bothering you, please tell me. I can help you."
Serene covered her mouth and shook her head while crying. "Sarah, I really have nothing to worry about. Please go back and rest in the ward. You don't need to care about me."
Saying that, Serene tried to control her wheelchair to leave, but she appeared somewhat flustered and ended up pinching her hand.
"Be careful." Sarah hurriedly stepped forward to help Serene control the wheelchair. "What happened exactly?"
A nurse rushed over anxiously from the side. "Ms. Jerrett, are you okay?"
Serene shook her head, unable to speak due to her sadness.
"Nurse, what's wrong with Ms. Jerrett?" Sarah furrowed her brow, feeling that something was about to happen.
The nurse looked at Serene with a tinge of sorrow and sighed heavily. "Ms. Jerrett's follow-up examination results came out, and they're quite serious."
"How serious?" Sarah unintentionally clenched her hands, feeling a hint of doubt and unease in her heart.
"Ms. Jerrett hurt her tendons, and there's a good chance she won't be able to stand up for the rest of her life," the nurse said.
At this point, tears were streaming uncontrollably down Serene’s face.
Antonio frowned. "Is it really that serious?"
Antonio vaguely recalled Serene rushing toward him, her voice filled with urgency as she shouted about her foot hurting.
However, amidst the chaos, Antonio had bumped his head and couldn't recall the exact details. Nevertheless, he faintly remembered Serene managing to rise from the ground, seemingly without major issues at the time. So, how had she suddenly injured her tendons, rendering her unable to stand?
Sarah's expression grew complicated. If Serene had truly altered the course of her life by saving Antonio, did that imply their futures would now be closely intertwined?
"Sarah, Antonio, I'm really fine. With today's advanced medical technology, I believe I'll recover soon. Please don't worry about me."
Serene held Sarah's hand, tears welling up in her eyes, looking pitifully adorable.
Sarah wanted to pull her hand back but couldn't bring herself to do it, seeing Serene in such a helpless state.
With Kevin still lying in the hospital and now Serene involved in an accident, it was likely that they would both need care for the rest of their lives. What were they going to do?
Most importantly, Serene's injuries were caused by saving Antonio. No matter what, she couldn't just stand by and do nothing.
"Ms. Jerrett, don't worry. The exact diagnosis hasn't been determined yet. This is just an initial assessment. Let's not be so pessimistic for now." Sarah comfortingly patted Serene's shoulder.
Though Antonio had doubts in his heart, he realized that Serene had saved him. She wouldn't have ended up in this situation if it weren't for him.
"Yes, don't be too sad right now. As long as you follow the treatment plan, the current medical conditions shouldn't pose a significant problem. I'll also find the best doctors nationwide to treat your leg. I won't let you be disabled," Antonio said, looking at Serene with deep gratitude.
"Antonio, you don't have to go through so much trouble. I don't want to burden you in any way with my situation. After all, it was my own willingness to save you," Serene said tearfully. "Just like back then, I never expected anything in return from you. We... we are good friends, right? Helping you is something I should do.
"Don't worry, I won't give up on myself, and I'm capable of bearing all the pain. There's really no need for you to worry about me."
Serene's words were touching, particularly as she intentionally recalled saving Antonio on the snowy mountains.
The mention of that incident visibly affected Antonio and Sarah, their expressions stiffening. The debt of gratitude from that time had weighed heavily on him for so long. He had settled it but was indebted once more now.
This was an unnecessary burden for Antonio and the most unbearable presence in his heart.
Serene secretly glanced at their expressions, feeling secretly proud. She knew that the incident from back then was something Antonio couldn't forget.
