Chapter 475 The Sting
At the elevator entrance, Antonio was walking over just in time to see Serene tumbling out of her wheelchair. His brow furrowed, and he quickened his pace toward her.
"Are you okay?"
The hospital corridor buzzed with activity, and any scene involving Serene, given her high-profile status, would undoubtedly attract unwanted attention and potential gossip—an unwelcome situation for Sarah.
But Serene appeared quite pleased with herself, shaking her head. She extricated herself from the nurse's hold and carefully shifted her weight onto Antonio.
"Antonio, please don't misunderstand! It wasn't Sarah who pushed me down; I fell by accident from the wheelchair. Please don't blame her."
The lines on Antonio's forehead deepened further. Blame Sarah? The thought hadn't even crossed his mind. He had spent the previous night confined to his car, wrestling with his own thoughts, trying to find some semblance of peace. Now, confronted with Serene's proximity, he inwardly cursed the timing. All he wanted was to avoid more drama, yet here it was, playing out in front of him.
Antonio tried to move toward Sarah, but Serene clung to him, showing no sign of letting go.
Witnessing the close embrace between the two of them, a sharp pain pierced Sarah's eyes, and her hands clenched into fists. What did she possess that these two still craved? Did they really need to cling to each other right in front of her?
"Antonio, thank you for your concern. I'm really fine, just help me back onto the wheelchair. You really shouldn't worry about me so much; it makes me feel guilty. Rest assured; I've never blamed you for that night."
The words made the veins on Antonio's forehead throb. He still hadn't figured out what exactly had happened that night! He had only come to help her because she fell, primarily to prevent Serene from attaching herself to Sarah; how did it suddenly become a matter of whether he cared or not?
The nurse by then had already picked up the wheelchair and gathered the scattered bouquet from the ground.
"Miss, your things. And your leg, do you want to get it checked again?"
"Thank you, but I don't need to be checked, I didn't injure myself when I fell."
Upon hearing Serene say she was fine, Antonio swiftly moved her onto the wheelchair.
"If you're fine, let go."
A flash of impatience flashed in Antonio's eyes as he released Serene.
Before he could ask Sarah if she was okay, Serene suddenly grabbed his wrist. "Antonio, I came here to apologize to Sarah and to check on Mr. Miller's condition. Even though he treated me that way... Could you talk to Sarah for me? Let me see him."
Sarah had reached her limit with these two.
"You two are truly insufferable!" she exclaimed, her tone laden with exasperation. "You come here early in the morning just to upset me, is that it? This is a hospital, not a theater. There will be no awards handed out for best performance today. Get lost!"
Antonio sensed Sarah's fury and quickly pushed Serene away, desperately trying to make amends with Sarah, "Sarah, I didn't, I just..."
Serene interrupted Antonio, crying out, "Antonio, I know you care about me, and I'm very grateful for that. Thanks to your care during this time, I haven't continued to harm myself. The Jerrett family is also very thankful to you; without you, the company might be in chaos now.
"About last night, I don't blame you either. We were all drunk, and we're all adults; we need to learn to take responsibility for ourselves. My only prayer is that whatever happened between us won't affect you and Sarah; I don't want to see the two of you break up!"
Antonio opened his mouth but didn't know how to respond. When had he taken care of her? Even regarding the Jerretts Group, he hadn't been as involved as before — he hadn't even set foot in the door of the Jerretts Group!
"Serene, can you shut up!"
Sarah let out a bitter laugh on the side, "Antonio, are you asking her to stop because you feel guilty?"
"Sarah, I'm not, I..."
Antonio looked into Sarah's mocking eyes, feeling deeply distressed, finding himself unable to utter a sound.
Serene wiped her tears and steered her wheelchair between the two, saying, "Sarah, none of us wanted things to escalate to this point. Let's both take a step back and pretend like nothing happened, okay?”
Sarah found the situation absurd. Pretend as if nothing happened? All those revelations were already laid out in front of her; was she supposed to ignore them and carry on?
Antonio, somewhat frantic, pushed Serene aside, speaking with desperation, "Serene, shut your mouth. What do you mean you don't blame me? Do you have any evidence to prove that I slept with you yesterday? Do you have any evidence to prove I even touched you?! I warn you, if you keep spouting nonsense here, I'll make sure you regret it!"
Serene looked at Antonio, who was thundering in front of her, her eyes filled with shock. Tears swirled in her eyes for a long time before falling incredulously. She covered her face with her hand, then forcefully wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes.
"Alright, I understand what you mean. I get it."
Serene's voice broke off, trembling slightly as she struggled to lift her head. "You're right, I've been talking nonsense all along. Everything is fake. I have no evidence, Sarah. There's nothing between us, rest assured..."
Upon hearing these words, Sarah stood frozen, her mind reeling from the sheer audacity. Did they actually think she was a fool? She couldn't even bring herself to be angry anymore; in fact, she felt a bizarre urge to laugh.
She rolled her eyes. "Could you both please go elsewhere? It's early in the morning, and I have a lot on my plate."
