Chapter 297 Looking at Him, Sarah Feels Sad

"Antonio," Serene said, her voice laced with desperation, "I understand your reservations. But I find myself cornered, without another option. Would you consider helping me?"

She paused, gathering her thoughts before continuing. "If you lend me your aid this time, let's consider it as settling all the debts I owe you. Henceforth, I promise not to impose upon you again. Would that be acceptable?"

Her plea was so earnest that if Antonio still refused, it would appear as though he lacked a sense of gratitude. Moreover, by agreeing to help this time, they would be square concerning past favors, a resolution Sarah was eager to achieve. Otherwise, who could predict how many more times Serene would dredge up past obligations to request Antonio's assistance?

Sarah cast a glance at Antonio, noticing he was awaiting her response. She offered him a reassuring wink.

"Very well, Miss Jerrett," she replied, "Since you've framed it in such a manner, it would be improper for us to decline. Rest assured, debts of gratitude are always to be honored."

Her words were laced with a hint of mockery towards Serene for her constant references to debts of gratitude. Simultaneously, she was reminding Serene of her promise. If she had voiced it, she was expected to follow through.

Serene's expression tightened slightly, but given the circumstances, she could only respond with a strained smile. The predicament had arisen unexpectedly, and aside from Antonio, she couldn't think of anyone else who could provide the necessary help. Furthermore, she was certain that Asa would take some action in the near future. Once Antonio and Sarah separated, who would bother about old debts?

With these thoughts swirling in her mind, Serene offered a grateful smile. "Thank you, Sarah. Your help means a lot to me."

"It's my pleasure. I will assist Antonio with all my heart."

After updating Ethan on household affairs, Sarah accompanied Antonio to the hospital. Mr. Jerrett had suffered a stroke and was now lying frail in his bed, his temples streaked with white hair, and the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes spoke volumes of his life's trials.

For some inexplicable reason, Sarah felt a pang of sadness at the sight of Mr. Jerrett's condition, and her nose tingled strangely. The sensation was peculiar, as if it was instinctual...

Leaning against the glass window, Serene's tears flowed freely as she observed her father on the sickbed. "My father has been in a coma for over 48 hours. The doctors are uncertain when he might regain consciousness."

Antonio, at a loss for comforting words, could only offer a silent sigh. Seeing Sarah's distressed expression, he gently wrapped his arms around her.

A nurse approached them at that moment. "Miss Jerrett, your father's pathology report is ready. Please come to the doctor's office."

"Thank you. I'll be there shortly," Serene responded, hastily wiping away her tears. However, after the nurse departed, she remained in place, her tear-streaked face turned towards Antonio.

"Why aren’t you going?" Antonio asked, his brows furrowed in confusion.

Serene covered her mouth, struggling to stifle her sobs. "Um," she managed to utter, her voice choked with emotion. "I... I'm terrified."

"Antonio, my father's health has been deteriorating for quite some time. The doctors warned us long ago that he didn't have much time left. I fear this report may bear grim news. What am I to do then?"

Serene's eyes were swollen from crying, and she had been unable to stem her tears since she had appeared before Antonio and Sarah. The news of the report's readiness had only intensified her tears.

"I'm scared to go alone. I'm genuinely concerned that I won't be able to handle the implications of the pathology report," Serene whispered, her words carrying an unspoken plea.

Sarah observed Serene's frail and pitiful state and, upon hearing her words, finally comprehended. Serene wasn't afraid to go; she clearly desired Antonio's company.

Sarah had initially planned to decline. But when she glanced at Mr. Jerrett lying on the sickbed, a wave of compassion washed over her. She decided to let it pass; matters of life and death were indeed significant.

She turned to Antonio, sighing quietly. "Antonio, accompany her. It wouldn't be right if the situation worsened."

Antonio pursed his lips, "Wait for me here and don't wander off, alright?"

"I'm not a child, Antonio," Sarah responded, shaking her head in mild exasperation. "You needn't worry about me."

Only then did Antonio accompany Serene to the doctor's office. Sarah found a nearby seat and settled down to wait for Antonio's return.

After a while, she heard someone calling Serene's name. She instinctively turned her head, intending to inform the person that Serene was currently in the doctor's office. To her surprise, the person's eyes lit up upon seeing her.

"Oh, Miss Jerrett," they exclaimed, "I finally get to meet you!"
