Chapter 817 Love Brings Agonizing Pain

Alex collapsed to the ground, burying his head deep in his arms, his tears wetting the letter paper.

At this point, he could only believe that Sofia had never really loved him.

Otherwise, how could she be so cruel? How could she say she loved him before her business trip, and then come back as someone else's bride?

Alex thought, maybe he wasn't worthy. Almost thirty years old, and for the first time, he fell so deeply in love, only for Sofia to completely discard him. Or perhaps, Sofia was just using him as an experiment, trying to fall in love with him.

But now, her true love had reached out, and she ran to Virgil without looking back.

In the past, when he was abroad, staying by Sarah's side, he always wanted to take care of her, to see her live better than anyone else. At one point, Alex thought that was love.

But after meeting Sofia, he realized it was completely different.

It turned out, love could make a person feel like they were dying from pain.

'But Sofia, how could you teach me what love is, and then leave so indifferently?' Alex thought to himself.

Sarah was really worried about Alex's despondent state and hurriedly had the family driver bring her over.

As soon as she walked in, she saw a mess, and Alex was like a frozen statue squatting on the ground, tears streaming down his face, looking utterly disheveled.

"Alex, what happened?" Sarah asked.

Alex slowly turned his head to look at her, his bloodshot eyes lifeless, without saying a word.

Sarah felt a pang of anxiety, wanting to say something more, but then she suddenly saw the paper on the ground. She immediately picked it up and read its contents.

"No, impossible!" She shook her head decisively. "Alex, don't believe her words. How could Sofia be the type to care about power and wealth? You've been with her for so long, don't you understand her?"

Alex just stood there, as if isolated from the world.

"Alex, pull yourself together!" She was extremely anxious but didn't know where to start persuading him. After a while, she couldn't wait any longer and said, "Go find her! Go ask Sofia face to face, she must have her reasons, okay? Please?"

To Sarah, Alex was a friend, and Sofia was an even more important person in her life.

She wanted them to be happy more than anyone else.

If they had broken up peacefully, that would be one thing.

But in this situation, it was clear Sofia was hiding something from them, forced to make such a decision for some reason.

They were clearly in love! How could she just stand by and do nothing? Alex couldn't just let it go either!

But Alex shook his head, his eyes filled with despair and bitterness, a self-mocking smile on his lips. "What's the point? If this is what she wants, then so be it."

Besides, with Sofia's personality, it wasn't impossible that she was just playing with him.

Alex couldn't help but recall the time he and Sofia had a fight. He had gone all the way to Luminara to celebrate her birthday, only to see Sofia and Virgil looking very intimate at a party, and overheard people saying their wedding was imminent.

So, everything had signs.

"How can you think that way?" Sarah looked at him, both distressed and anxious. "Sofia is my best friend, and I know about her and Virgil. She doesn't like Virgil at all. If she did, she would have followed the engagement and gotten engaged to him long ago. Why would she have a falling out with her family and run away? And from what I've heard recently, the only person she keeps mentioning is you. How could she not like you? Alex, think about it..."

Before she could finish, Alex had already walked into his room, his lonely figure like a walking corpse.

"Alex!" Sarah called out.

He didn't respond.

Sarah bit her lip, her heart feeling like it was weighed down by a huge stone, making her extremely uncomfortable.

She regretted it deeply. So much had happened with her and Antonio recently, she had been too busy and neglected Sofia's feelings. They had just met yesterday, and she hadn't noticed anything unusual about Sofia.

If Sofia was really forced, then she was also responsible!

The more Sarah thought about it, the more uneasy she felt. She had to go see what was going on with Sofia, why Sofia didn't tell her about such a big thing as getting married, and what was going on with Alex. She had to figure it all out!

With these thoughts, Sarah didn't want to wait another moment and turned to go home.

Antonio saw her hurried look and asked worriedly, "Sarah, what's going on?"

Sarah ignored him, and just hurriedly went upstairs to pack her luggage.

Seeing her like this, Antonio became extremely worried and followed her, asking, "Sarah, what happened? Why are you suddenly packing?"

He instinctively thought he had done something to upset Sarah again, afraid that she was planning to leave home.

Sarah was both angry and anxious. "Sofia broke up with Alex and ran back to Luminara. She left Alex a lot of hurtful words that she didn't mean. She's definitely hiding something serious from me. I'm worried sick! I have to go find her and get to the bottom of this!"

"You..." Antonio wanted to say something.

"Are you trying to stop me?" Seeing Antonio frown, she thought he was going to stop her and angrily said, "Do you have any conscience? Sofia and I are so close, and she didn't tell me anything about what's happening. I'm already upset enough, and you're adding to my troubles!"

Antonio was silent.

He hadn't even said anything, and he was already being scolded!

Antonio took the clothes from her hands and helped her pack. "I wasn't planning to stop you. It's just that you're pregnant now, so of course, I'm worried. So, let me go with you, okay?"

Not only was Antonio worried about Sarah, but he also didn't want to be separated from her.

Sarah, straightforward as always, directly refused. "Why would you go?"

"To protect you!" Antonio continued packing without stopping, and added, "And if, as you said, Virgil tries to bully you, I can help, right?"

With that, Sarah thought he made sense.

Last time, Virgil and "Benjamin" had met, and Virgil seemed quite wary of the Harrington family.

"Alright then." She nodded, then gave him a warning look. "But you better not slow me down!"

"Get it!" He was totally supportive of Sarah!

Soon, the couple packed their things and went downstairs. After saying goodbye to the kids, Antonio went to Francis's room. "Francis, Sarah, and I have something to take care of and will be away for an indefinite period. I'll need you to handle things at home and at the company for now."

"What?" Thinking it was too sudden, Francis frowned. "Why so rushed? I'm not ready to go back to the company yet, I might not be able to..."
