Chapter 744 Not Sleeping with Her

Mary suddenly felt parched and downed a glass of water in two quick gulps.

She set the glass on the table, her eyes darting around to avoid Timothy's gaze. "What's up with Cynthia's test results? Can you tell me now?" she asked.

Timothy glanced down, noticing her smooth forehead and slightly flushed earlobes.

"I'm hungry," he said.

Mary blinked, confused. "What?"

"I skipped dinner," Timothy sighed, his voice calm and distant. "If you want me to work, shouldn't you feed me first?"

Mary's face turned even redder, her thoughts wandering.

Timothy was always so straight-laced; she couldn't believe he was joking with her.

She awkwardly tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Then... then you should go eat first!"

Timothy grabbed his coat from the rack. "Come with me," he suggested.

"I've already had dinner," she explained.

"We can talk while we eat," he insisted.

Mary watched Timothy walk out of the office, took a deep breath, and jogged to catch up.

There were plenty of restaurants near the hospital. Timothy wasn't picky about food but was particular about cleanliness. He picked a place that looked clean and wasn't crowded.

Mary followed him and sat down obediently.

"Anything you want to eat?" Timothy asked casually.

She shook her head. "I'm fine with anything."

Timothy ordered a few dishes based on her preferences and then wiped the table in front of them with a napkin.

Mary was used to his habits and looked around, feeling a bit bored.

"Have you gotten used to it?" Timothy's sudden question made her pause.

"Life," he clarified. "We just got married, and I went on a business trip. Have you adjusted to being alone at home?"

Mary licked her lips. "It's okay."

To be honest, it wasn't about getting used to it or not.

Her father, Kenneth Smith, was gone, and she was alone in the world. It didn't seem to matter where she was; being with Timothy was better.

Deep down, she was happy to see him often.

But in terms of daily life, she wasn't used to it.

It was a completely unfamiliar environment. She couldn't adapt so quickly. Not to mention, she wasn't even used to the bed.

And Timothy's mom, Shirley Wright, always gave her a hard time.

Timothy seemed really busy with work, often staying up late. She didn't want to burden him with more problems.

Timothy took in all the expressions on her face but couldn't figure out what she was thinking.

"You can call me anytime if you need anything, whether it's about life or school."

Mary responded faintly, not sure how she felt. She even felt a bit disappointed.

She knew Timothy said these things out of responsibility, because of her father's request, not because he had any special feelings for her. Otherwise, why didn't he live with her since they had been married for so long?

Mary accompanied him through dinner, lost in thought. When they returned to the hospital, she couldn't help but ask, "What's the situation with Cynthia's condition?"

Timothy put on his white coat again and handed her the test results. "She has a tumor in her brain that needs to be removed as soon as possible."

One sentence explained the severity of the situation.

Mary frowned deeply, squinting at the test results. She didn't fully get all the medical jargon, but the final conclusion was clear as day.

She was lost in thought for a moment before she remembered to ask, "Do they know yet?"

'Sarah and Antonio are gonna be devastated,' Mary thought.

"No," Timothy replied, reading her emotions. "You're closer to them. You should be the one to tell them."

"Okay," Mary said after a moment. "I'll tell them tomorrow morning."

"Alright." Timothy's gaze lingered on her face. Her tan skin was as delicate as a freshly peeled egg, and under the light, he could see every fine hair.

He had always known Mary was beautiful, capable of making his heart flutter.

Mary was deep in thought and didn't notice Timothy getting closer, his eyes growing darker.

"You..." She looked up just in time to almost bump into Timothy's chin.

Her heart skipped a beat. "Why are you so close?"

Mary had intended to ask if he was staying at the hospital tonight. If he was, she would go home first. She didn't expect Timothy to get so close.

She could feel her heart racing, almost as if it wasn't hers.

"There was something on you." His deep voice was right by her ear.

Timothy casually brushed something off her hair, noticing her slight tension and trembling eyelashes.

He chuckled softly and raised his hand to cover his nose, saying, "I'm on night duty tonight. You can take my car home."

Mary could tell he was in a good mood but didn't know why. She responded faintly.

Timothy watched her, the curve of his lips growing wider. He casually took her hand. "Let's go. I'll walk you out."

Mary was stunned but followed him.

As they left the office, they ran into a colleague.

The colleague's surprised gaze fell on their clasped hands, and he stammered, "Dr. Reed, your surgery schedule for this month is out. It's so full you barely have time to rest. Can you handle it?"

'Given the current situation, it seems he could handle it just fine. He even has time to be with his girlfriend!' the colleague thought.

'But it doesn't make sense. Isn't Dr. Reed supposed to have a breakup with his first love? The whole hospital is talking about how Dr. Reed is waiting for her! He couldn't suddenly be dating a young girl, could he? Maybe I misunderstood; this girl might be his sister!' the colleague couldn't help but wonder.

Timothy didn't respond and just led Mary past him.

It wasn't until Mary drove out of the hospital that she realized what had happened, breathing heavily.

Timothy had held her hand. It must have been unintentional! After all, he knew she was afraid of the dark at night. But this unintentional act would keep her mind in turmoil for a long time.

The next morning, just as Sarah and Antonio walked into the hospital room, Sarah's phone started ringing.

She said to Antonio, "It's Mary."

She glanced at Antonio and answered the call. "Mary, we just got to the hospital. Why are you calling so early? Is something wrong?"

"I'm on my way too." Mary seemed to sigh in relief. "I thought you might be busy today, so I wanted to call and tell you about Cynthia's condition."

Sarah quickly asked, "How is Cynthia?"

Mary explained, "The test results came out last night. Dr. Reed said Cynthia has a tumor in her brain pressing on her nerves. She needs surgery as soon as possible, or it could be life-threatening."
