Chapter 474 The Closed Door
After saying her piece, Sarah gently pulled away from Antonio's embrace, entered the hospital room, and quietly closed the door behind her.
She no longer desired any connection with Antonio. All she yearned for was to stand by her brother's side, patiently waiting for him to awaken, and then take the children away from this place forever.
Antonio stood staring at the firmly shut door, as if he could see Sarah's figure moving further and further away. He felt utterly drained, his body chilled to the core, devoid of any strength or will to take action.
How did it come to this? They had just recently professed their love for each other. How had it transformed into the situation it was now?
Antonio couldn’t help but consider knocking on the hospital room door, but deep down, he knew that doing so at this moment would only fuel Sarah’s anger and drive her further away.
Ultimately, Antonio left with a heavy heart, descending from the VIP ward on the top floor to his car parked in the hospital lot.
As he closed the car door, his eyes caught a photo hanging on the rearview mirror—Sarah and the children, all wearing radiant smiles, radiating warmth that seemed so distant now.
And so, Antonio sat idly in the car for an entire night. Sarah didn't want to see him, but apart from being by her side, there was nowhere else he wanted to go.
Inside the hospital room, Sarah stared out the window, utterly exhausted, yet sleep eluded her. Fearful that closing her eyes would summon images of Antonio and Serene together in bed, she fought the nausea and dread. She no longer shed tears; it seemed as if her ability to cry had evaporated overnight. She silently observed, watching until the sun graced the sky.
The nurse looked at Sarah with concern, cautiously approaching to comfort her.
Faced with the nurse's kindness, Sarah just shook her head and silently got up to go to the bathroom. She filled a basin with warm water and carefully began wiping Brady's face and limbs.
"Brady, when will you wake up? The kids and I miss you so much. Can you come back to us?"
Sarah kept talking to Brady, unsure if he could hear her, but unable to stop herself. She poured out her heart, recounting everything from the present to their childhood.
Just then, the door was slowly pushed open, followed by the sound of wheels turning.
Sarah's expression instantly darkened.
"Sarah... I just got back to the hospital and thought I'd come and check on you and Mr. Miller, I..."
"Get out."
Sarah stood abruptly, fixating on the ground as she hastened to close the door, unwilling to spare Serene another glance.
Serene had a bouquet of flowers resting on her lap and used her hand to block the door, "Sarah! Listen to me, I sincerely came here to apologize today, I'm sorry! It's all my fault, please don't blame Antonio. We were really drunk, and you know I'm disabled, I don't have the strength..."
Sarah's complexion worsened. "Can't you understand human language?"
Tears welled up in Serene's eyes instantly, as if she were deeply wronged. She tightly clutched Sarah's hand. "Sarah, I genuinely came to apologize. Even if you don't forgive me, please accept the flowers for your brother's sake!"
Sarah took a deep breath and harshly grasped Serene's collar, shouting fiercely, "You dare mention my brother?! Serene, there's something I've wanted to say for a long time — you're despicable!"
Serene's eyes widened, her face alternating between red and pale. She felt deeply humiliated, but the anticipation of soon having Antonio to herself made enduring Sarah's scolding seem like a small price to pay.
"Sarah, I'm sorry, I know no matter what I say you won’t believe me... but I really never intended to ruin your relationship with Antonio..."
Sarah let out a bitter laugh. "Right, you didn’t intend to ruin it, you just wanted to sleep with him, is that it? First, you kept bringing up how you saved him when you were kids, then you injured your leg for him. Are you proud that he can't get rid of you for the rest of his life? Serene, we’re both women; do you think I can't see what you’re really after? To tell these lies in front of me now, remember that God is listening too!"
Serene was scolded to the point where she couldn't raise her head. She just clenched her teeth and pretending to be saddened.
"I’m not gonna fight you because you’re crippled, but next time I see you, I make no promises.”
With that, Sarah discarded all the bouquets Serene had brought and pushed her wheelchair in a different direction.
"Sarah, please don't be like this. I really want to make amends with you. I promise not to interfere in your life with Antonio. Please, don't treat me this way. At least let me check on Mr. Miller. The news of his accident has genuinely upset me..."
In reality, Serene was there to assess Brady's condition. She hadn't anticipated that he would be fortunate enough to survive! Although Brady was in a vegetative state, the thought of him waking up one day posed a potential threat to her.
However, Sarah was convinced that Serene played a role in her brother's accident and wasn't about to let her anywhere near Brady.
"Stop pretending to be virtuous. Both my brother and I don’t want to see you. Get out!”
As the words left Sarah's mouth, a cry of pain echoed, and Serene, along with her wheelchair, tumbled to its side, scattering the bouquet across the floor.
The commotion naturally drew the attention of a passing nurse. “Are you alright? How did you fall ?”
The nurse quickly ran over to help Serene back up.
Sarah composed herself, inwardly scoffing. She hadn't exerted much force, so how did Serene end up falling like that?
It seemed that Serene didn't even seem to bother pretending anymore, but who was she performing for?
In the next second, Sarah realized who Serene wanted to perform for —
