Chapter 423 The Impossibility of Easy Reconciliation
The health of Grandfather Jerret had taken a severe turn for the worse. His once sharp mind now clouded with confusion, he spent more time in a coma than conscious. His condition was a far cry from the Alzheimer's that had plagued him before. Sarah, her brow furrowed with worry, voiced her suspicion. "I fear someone within the Jerret family means to harm Grandfather," she confessed.
Antonio was taken aback by this revelation. He had not inquired about Kevin Jerret's health recently and was shocked to hear of its rapid decline. Sarah's concerns were not unfounded; in a family fraught with internal power struggles, anything was possible.
"Rest assured, I'll have someone look into this," Antonio promised, his tone firm. "You must be careful too."
With the patriarch of the Jerret family incapacitated, Antonio had been thrust into the role of temporary leader. This newfound position made him a prime target. Determined to avoid a repeat of a previous kidnapping incident, he had enlisted the protection of several bodyguards for both his home and business.
Sarah nodded in understanding. "Let's head home," she suggested, her voice steady despite the circumstances.
Upon their return, Antonio and Sarah managed to compose themselves. However, their calm was short-lived. As they opened the door, they were met with the sight of a stranger standing in their living room.
Antonio's guard was instantly up, his eyes narrowing in suspicion. "Who are you? What are you doing here?" he demanded.
Sarah, too, was taken aback, but upon seeing the stranger's smile, her eyes lit up with recognition. "Brother!" she exclaimed, rushing towards him.
The stranger was none other than Sarah's long-lost brother, Brady Miller. Sarah had previously returned to their home country to help clear Brady's name of false rape charges.
After the successful resolution of the case, Brady had left, occasionally sending postcards to his sister. Antonio was aware that Brady had joined an international wildlife rescue organization as a volunteer and had been traveling the globe.
Sarah was overjoyed by her brother's unexpected return. Brady had changed during his time away, becoming stronger and more mature. His skin was bronzed from his travels, and he exuded a calm confidence. Sarah had initially failed to recognize him, mistaking him for a stranger, much like Antonio had.
"Why didn't you tell me you were coming back?" Sarah asked, her voice filled with excitement. "I could have picked you up!"
Brady ruffled his sister's hair affectionately. "There's no need for that, sis. No matter where you are, I'll always find you."
Antonio watched their interaction, finally recognizing the man before him as his brother-in-law, Brady Miller. He extended his hand in greeting. "It's been a while, Brady. I didn't recognize you at first."
Their past interactions had been fraught with tension, largely due to Sarah. This had created a significant rift between them. Brady, having been away for so long, was unaware of the trials Antonio and Sarah had faced. However, seeing them arrive home together, he surmised that they had reconciled.
Brady's response was curt. "Mr. Valencia," he said, emphasizing the formal address. Antonio withdrew his hand, understanding that Brady still harbored resentment from their past disagreements.
"You've changed a lot," Antonio remarked, attempting to lighten the mood. "You've grown stronger."
Brady's expression remained cold. He couldn't comprehend how Sarah could have reconciled with Antonio so easily, especially considering the hatred she had expressed for him when Brady had left.
