Chapter 737 Who is Mary
The nurse thought for a sec and said, "You'll need to check with the hospital about that."
Sarad nodded. "Alright, I'll roll with you."
She glanced over and saw Antonio wrapping up his call. She said, "Since we're all here, I wanna take Cynthia back and look after her first. We can sort everything out later, cool?"
In Sarah's mind, Cynthia sneaking out meant she was fed up with the nursing home. If it happened again, who knows what kind of trouble she'd get into.
So, taking her back seemed like the best move.
Antonio was down. "Shall we bounce now?"
"Yup."
They followed the nurse back to the nursing home. The director, hearing Cynthia's family was here, was more than happy to let them take her ASAP.
He grumbled, "Cynthia's always trying to bail. We've done our best to keep her here, but who knows what'll happen next."
Sarah grabbed a pen and signed the form.
"Thanks for looking after her all this time."
The director forced a smile, saying, "Well, it's our job."
Sarah nodded politely and was about to take Cynthia away when she saw Cynthia staring blankly in one direction, shouting, "Mary! Mary is here!"
Sarah looked over, confused about who this "Mary" was, and saw no one.
She asked, "Cynthia, you sure you saw her?"
Cynthia nodded, her eyes lighting up with excitement. "No mistake! Mary is here!"
The director chimed in, "Oh, she's talking about Mary Smith, a college student who volunteers here a lot. Cynthia's really close to her. But she's probably been super busy lately! She hasn't been around for a while!"
Hearing that, Sarah nodded thoughtfully.
She couldn't help but wonder, 'Did Cynthia's escape have something to do with Mary?'
Before she could think more, Cynthia excitedly ran towards the door, shouting, "Mary!"
Sarah was about to comfort her when she saw a young girl indeed walking around the corner. She looked young and pretty, with delicate features and a warm smile. Her voice was clear and pleasant as she called out, "Cynthia."
Cynthia reached out and hugged her, acting all spoiled. "You finally came. I missed you."
Mary pouted and apologized, "Sorry, I've been kinda busy lately."
Sarah watched the scene, feeling touched, and sincerely thanked her, "Hey, Miss Smith, I'm Sarah. Thanks for looking after my aunt Cynthia."
Hearing that, a hint of surprise flashed in Mary's eyes as she looked at Cynthia.
She thought Cynthia had no family and couldn't figure out why a niece named Sarah suddenly showed up.
But she didn't say much, just smiled. "It's cool. I like Cynthia too."
Sarah hadn't seen such a pure and healing smile in a long time, and her expression softened.
She said, "Miss Smith, I'm planning to take Cynthia back. Let's swap numbers. If you need any help in the future, hit me up."
She initially wanted to give Mary some cash as a thank you.
But that thought quickly vanished as Mary didn't seem like someone who needed money.
"No!"
Before Mary could speak, Cynthia hurriedly refused, her face full of dissatisfaction.
Mary shouted, "I don't wanna be separated from Mary! Unless Mary comes with me, I ain't going!"
Sarah looked at Cynthia, who was clinging to Mary's hand like her life depended on it, showing signs of being stubborn.
She said helplessly, "Cynthia, Miss Smith still has to go to school. We can't mess up her life."
Despite Sarah's explanation, Cynthia hugged Mary tighter and shook her head.
Sarah took a step back, suggesting, "How about this? We'll go back first, and when Mary has time, we can meet her again?"
"No!" Cynthia was super firm.
She insisted, "I want Mary to come with us!"
Sarah glanced at Antonio for backup, but he was just as clueless and helpless.
Sarah sighed and kept trying, "Cynthia, we're heading back to the Capital city soon. We won't be here forever. Mary has her own life, and we can't mess that up, right?"
Cynthia didn't say anything, and it was unclear if she got it.
But she didn't let go of Mary's hand at all.
Mary looked at them and tentatively said, "How about..."
As soon as she spoke, all eyes were on her.
Mary continued, "If you're staying in Marshall City for a bit, why don't I take care of Cynthia for now?"
While gently patting Cynthia's back, she added, "This way, Cynthia can have some time to adjust. Once she trusts you, she'll naturally be willing to go with you."
Hearing Mary's words, Sarah and Antonio exchanged a glance and felt this was a solid plan.
Sarah said, "Miss Smith, that's really kind of you. But wouldn't this be too much trouble for you?"
Sarah felt a bit guilty as she added, "After all, you're still in school, and I'm worried Cynthia's situation might mess with your life."
Mary smiled and shook her head. "It's cool. My coursework isn't too heavy right now, so I have time to take care of Cynthia."
She blinked. "And if I don't have time, you can use that chance to bond with her, right?"
Hearing that, Sarah had no more worries and was super grateful. "Thank you."
"It's no problem," Mary replied.
"Do you have time now?" Sarah wanted to learn more about Cynthia's time at the nursing home. "If you do, can we treat you to a meal?"
Mary looked at her watch and nodded. "Sure!"
Sarah smiled. "Then let's roll!"
Antonio found a restaurant that was a twenty-minute drive away.
Sarah sat in the front passenger seat, while Mary and Cynthia sat in the back, chatting closely. Sarah listened to them and couldn't help but smile.
At the restaurant, Cynthia sat next to Mary, playing with the keychain on her bag.
Sarah watched this scene with mixed feelings.
"Mary, can I call you that?"
Mary smiled, her eyes bright. "Of course."
Sarah asked, "Mary, has Cynthia caused you a lot of trouble?"
"Not at all." Mary shook her head. "Rather than saying Cynthia caused me trouble, it's more like we kept each other company. I grew up without a mom, and Cynthia has been really good to me."
"I'm sorry," Sarah apologized.
"It's okay. I don't have many memories of my mom, just a bit of regret."
Sarah was curious but didn't push it. She changed the subject and said, "Can you tell me about Cynthia's time at the nursing home?"
