Chapter 759 What, Mom?
As soon as Sarah heard her say that, she had a hunch.
It seemed like Claire must've been really close to Cynthia before.
She quickly asked, "Claire, do you know how Cynthia ended up in Marshall City? Besides you, does she have any other friends or family here?"
Claire let out a heavy sigh. "Honestly, I'm not too sure about her family stuff. Back then, it seemed like Cynthia ran away to this city."
Sarah frowned. "Ran away?"
"Yeah," Claire nodded. "I don't know the full story, but when she got to Marshall City, she had no money and barely any luggage. That's why she took the most basic job and met me."
Claire added, "I thought it was weird at the time. She seemed talented and beautiful, but she was willing to do manual labor. She had no relatives or friends and was always alone. It was tough for her at first without any money."
Claire sighed again. "The most unexpected thing was that she later found a boyfriend and was even talking about marriage. But for some reason, she had a miscarriage, and that guy was a jerk! He just left her because of it!"
Claire was still fuming as she talked about it.
She took a couple of deep breaths to calm down and continued, "Cynthia was really affected by this and was in a lot of pain. She didn't keep in touch with friends much after that. Later on, I lost contact with her. I thought she had gone back to her hometown alone. I didn't expect her to still be in Marshall City and end up like this."
Claire looked at Cynthia with eyes full of sympathy and heartache.
It hadn't been thought that they'd meet again under such circumstances.
Sarah bit her lip, taking in everything Claire had just said, finding it very useful.
Sarah had guessed that Cynthia's past wouldn't be simple, but she didn't expect her to have gone through so much. She couldn't help but wonder why Cynthia ran away from home to this city.
She was very grateful to Claire, saying, "We need to know more about Cynthia. This will help with her mental treatment. Could you spend some more time telling us in detail?"
Claire readily agreed. "Of course, if it can help her, I'm happy to do it."
"Thank you!" Sarah and Mary were both delighted and thanked her earnestly. "Let's talk more after we take Cynthia back to the hospital."
The hospital was just nearby. They went back along with Claire, instructed the nurse to take good care of Cynthia, and then the three of them found a nearby café.
Claire recounted the details of meeting Cynthia back then.
"She was always alone," Claire recollected. At the time, they all thought Cynthia was hard to get along with because she was always by herself and seemed preoccupied.
But later, it turned out that wasn't the truth.
Sarah thought for a moment and asked, "Claire, do you know Cynthia's boyfriend?"
"I saw him from a distance once," Claire recalled. "I was sharing an apartment with Cynthia at the time. She never brought her boyfriend home, but I happened to see him once by chance."
Sarah immediately perked up. "You shared an apartment with Cynthia?"
"Yeah." Claire's eyes lit up with a bit of joy as she remembered those days. "Cynthia was a really interesting person. At first, she didn't know how to share chores. When she finally learned to cook, she always took care of me."
Then she added, "But she left so suddenly and never came back. I waited for her for a long time and kept her things for her."
As Claire spoke, she couldn't help but feel down again, and all that was left were sighs.
Sarah and Mary were both excited to hear this.
If they could see Cynthia's old things, they might get more useful information and even find out her boyfriend's identity!
Sarah glanced at Mary and tentatively asked, "Claire, do you still have those things?"
After all these years, the chances of keeping them were slim.
The next second, they heard Claire say, "I still have them!" Claire nodded and continued, "She didn't have much stuff anyway. I always thought she would come back, so I kept them."
It might also be because she was used to it. As she got older, she couldn't bear to throw away things she could see.
"But I recently moved to a new place, and those things are still in the old house, all messy. If you don't mind..."
Before Claire could say more, they both blurted out, "Of course, we don't mind!"
Sarah and Mary agreed simultaneously and smiled at each other.
Then they said, "Claire, could you take us to see them?"
Claire took them to her home in the old part of Marshall City. The narrow passageways couldn't accommodate a car, so they had to park outside and walk in.
"This area is going to be demolished, so we had to move out," Claire explained as they walked.
Looking around at the surroundings, Sarah couldn't help but wonder what Cynthia's mindset was at the time. She had lived a life like a wealthy lady but suddenly ran to Marshall City to live as an ordinary person.
The old buildings had no elevators, and Sarah was already out of breath by the time she climbed to the fifth floor.
Claire opened the door and looked at her, worriedly saying, "There are a lot of things. It might take a while to find them."
"I'm fine." Sarah shook her head and stood up straight with Mary's help. "I'm in my second trimester now. Some exercise is good for me. Don't worry."
As they walked in, the room was indeed a mess. Chairs and tables were overturned, and things were piled up everywhere. It was hard to tell which were Cynthia's belongings.
"We'll take our time to find them. Thank you!"
Sarah rolled up her sleeves and started working.
Seeing her determination, Claire didn't say anything more.
Mary waved away the dust, saying, "Sarah, I'll help you."
Sarah didn't refuse, just gave her a grateful look.
The two of them started searching the room, organizing the things they pulled out of the cabinets.
Before long, Mary's phone suddenly rang.
Sarah glanced back and reminded her.
Mary's hands were already dirty, but she didn't care. She wiped them a bit and took out her phone. It was Timothy!
Why was he calling?
Mary glanced at Sarah guiltily and pretended nothing was wrong as she answered the call, "Hello?"
She held the phone between her shoulder and ear, but her ear accidentally hit the speaker button, and Timothy's deep voice came through. "My mom wants us to go back. Are you at school? I'll pick you up after work."
