Chapter 299 The Difficult Path of Mr. Valencia's Pursuit

Upon hearing that, Serene's head dipped low, her face a picture of profound distress. "I merely intended to notify the company ahead of time to prevent any mishaps should I fail to return promptly. I trust you won't misconstrue my intentions, Sarah," she said.

"Rest assured, Miss Jerrett, there are no misunderstandings," Sarah responded, her smile not quite reaching her eyes. "We're well aware of the company's affairs. Is there anything else you wish to discuss?"

"That would be all. I sincerely appreciate your presence here today," Serene promptly conveyed her gratitude, her manners impeccable.

"There's no need for such formality. I assure you, I'll do my utmost for the group," Antonio declared, taking Sarah's hand and leading her away.

Before they departed, Sarah cast a lingering glance at Mr. Jerrett, lying frail on the hospital bed. As Serene watched the retreating figures, her expression darkened considerably.

Once they had left the hospital, Sarah didn't harbor any resentment toward Serene. Instead, her mind was consumed by the image of Mr. Jerrett on his sickbed. Thoughts of her own absent father filled her with a profound sense of loss.

"You've seemed out of sorts since we left the hospital. If you're uncomfortable with me going to Jerrett Group, I can inform Serene right now that I won't," Antonio offered, reaching for his phone. Sarah, however, stopped him.

"No, it's not about that," Sarah reassured him with a smile. "I was merely reflecting on Mr. Jerrett's situation."

"Given his critical condition, he only has his daughter, Serene, to look after him," Sarah's voice wavered, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "If my father were in such a state, I wouldn't even have the opportunity to perform my filial duties."

Understanding dawned on Antonio as he realized the depth of Sarah's emotions. He gently took her hand, his eyes softening with compassion. "Sarah, I've delved into your mother's past, but I've found no significant leads. The only possible clue lies in Country M."

Country M was where Sarah's mother had studied, but she had never divulged any details about her past to Sarah. After discovering that John Miller wasn't her biological father, Sarah had tried to locate her real father but to no avail. Her mother had concealed the truth well.

Now, witnessing Mr. Jerrett's condition stirred a whirlwind of emotions within Sarah. She yearned to fulfill her filial duties, fearing she might never get the chance.

"Don't worry, there's no rush. After all these years, a little more waiting won't make a difference. Once Serene wraps up everything, we can personally visit Country M and investigate," Antonio reassured her.

"It would be a dream come true if I could find my real father," Sarah agreed. She had always felt guilty about losing her mother's keepsake and hoped to find her father, thereby fulfilling her mother's unfulfilled wish.

Antonio nodded, letting out a soft sigh. His expression and tone shifted subtly, but Sarah remained oblivious.

Unbeknownst to her, Antonio had been planning something special for their upcoming anniversary. Despite their marriage certificate, their long separation and numerous trials had convinced Antonio of the need for a ceremony, a commitment, to solidify their bond. He had been preparing for a fresh start, a brand-new proposal ceremony.

Although the sudden situation involving the Jerrett Group had disrupted his plans, he was determined not to let anything mar this significant day.

"What's on your mind?" Sarah playfully poked Antonio's waist. Antonio, ticklish, quickly pulled her into his arms, deflecting her question. "I was just wondering when you'll miss me like this too." Sarah rolled her eyes at him. "Comparing yourself to my biological father, how arrogant."

Despite Antonio's efforts to keep the proposal a secret, Brian, who kept a close eye on Antonio, was not easily fooled. "He's been buying hot air balloons? Why?" Brian questioned, puzzled by Antonio's actions.

Alex nodded. "Not only has he purchased a multitude of hot air balloons, but he's also ordered a field full of asters. I believe he's planning a grand surprise for Sarah."

"This man knows how to alternate between being tough and tender, and he's always brimming with creative ideas. That's how he won Mommy's heart," Brian grumbled, his anger mounting.

In his eyes, apart from these superficial gestures, Antonio couldn't offer his mother anything substantial.

"What are you scheming this time?" Alex inquired, reading Brian's intent from his expression.

"Find out when he plans to surprise Mommy and gather all the details. Then..."

Alex sighed inwardly. He couldn't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for Antonio. With their prodigious child involved, Mr. Valencia's pursuit seemed to be an uphill battle.
