Chapter 70 Harper is My Daughter
In the warehouse, James rolled up with his crew just in time to catch the chaos. He hollered, "Mr. Valencia, heads up!"
But Antonio, not hearing a thing, charged forward like a madman. He caught Harper mid-fall, his hands moving like lightning. The impact knocked him flat, but he wrapped Harper up in his arms, taking the brunt of the fall.
Pain shot through him, but Antonio bit down and took it. When he finally steadied himself and looked at Harper, her eyes were shut tight, and she was pale as a ghost. "Harper, wake up!"
Then he felt something warm on his hand—blood!
Harper had smacked the back of her head during the fall, and now blood was pouring out, soaking her hair.
Up on the top floor, Sarah was frozen, watching Harper fall. "Harper!"
Fear like she'd never known hit her. Sarah screamed, shoved Lusa aside, and bolted downstairs.
The sirens were getting louder, and Lusa knew she was cornered.
She started shaking like she was having a fit. The rage and murder in her eyes turned to pure despair. "I can't go to jail. I can't!"
She muttered to herself, stumbling towards the window. The flashing lights and sirens outside seemed to drill into her brain.
With a sudden, eerie smile, she jumped from the top floor!
Sarah was racing downstairs when she heard a sickening thud behind her. She turned to see Lusa lying in a pool of blood, but her face stayed stone cold. She didn't even blink, just kept running towards Harper.
Blood was still gushing from Harper's head, and Antonio's arm was messed up too. Leaving the scene to the cops, James sped them to the hospital.
On the way, Sarah held Harper tight, staring at her pale face with deep sorrow.
It was all her fault. If she hadn't put up with Lusa's crap, Lusa wouldn't have gotten so out of hand.
If she'd protected Harper better and not let her go out alone with Antonio, Harper wouldn't be in this mess.
Antonio felt the guilt too, his usual icy demeanor melting into worry.
Just then, Harper, still out cold, whispered, "Mommy, it hurts."
"Harper, Mom's here. Don't worry. We're almost at the hospital. Just hold on a bit longer." Sarah cried, her voice shaking. She gently brushed Harper's pale face, scared to hurt her more.
When Antonio heard "Mommy," he was thrown for a loop. His eyes darted between Sarah and Harper, but he shrugged it off as a comforting lie, not giving it much thought.
Once they hit the hospital, Harper was rushed to the ER, and Antonio's face was a storm of emotions.
The scene replayed in his head—Harper's pale face, the blood—it all left him shaken.
He still had no clue who Harper's parents were. She was in this mess because of him. How was he gonna explain this to her family?
As the ER doors swung shut, Sarah, drained and weak, collapsed to the side.
Antonio caught her just in time, seeing her pale face and eyes glued to the ER doors. He sighed softly and tried to comfort her, "Harper's gonna be okay."
But Sarah wasn't having it. She snapped and slapped Antonio hard across the face. "This is all your fault! You took Harper out, why didn't you protect her?"
How could he even say that?
If he'd kept a better eye on Harper, she wouldn't have been snatched by that psycho Lusa!
Antonio, that arrogant jerk, if anything happened to Harper, she'd go after him with everything she had!
Sarah's eyes were like daggers, wishing she could tear Antonio apart.
Antonio's cheek stung from the slap. Getting smacked by Sarah in public was a huge hit to his pride.
And this wasn't the first time she'd slapped him. He'd let it slide before, but she was getting bolder!
Antonio's eyes darkened with anger, but when he noticed the pain in Sarah's eyes, his heart skipped a beat, and his anger dissipated.
He couldn't figure out why Sarah always lost it whenever Harper got hurt.
Last time Harper jumped into the alligator pool, Sarah had freaked out just as bad.
Antonio asked, "Why do you always react so strongly when Harper gets hurt?"
Done with his questions, Sarah decided to spill the beans and shouted, "Because Harper is my daughter!"
