Chapter 878 Cancer and Blindness
"Yes, her son is hospitalized here. Didn't you know?"
After the nurse finished speaking, she wheeled Elara to the ward. The children followed, while Antonio took Brian to handle the admission procedures.
Sarah didn't expect such a coincidence. She slowly followed behind and turned to Francis, saying, "Francis, Elara hasn't woken up yet. When Antonio comes back, should we go see her son first?"
After all, Elara got injured saving Ryan. They should visit her out of both gratitude and courtesy.
"Yes, I think so too." Francis was never one to owe favors. Since Elara saved Ryan, they should help her son if they could.
Soon, Antonio returned, and the three of them went to the ward of Elara's son.
A frail boy lay on the hospital bed, seemingly asleep. The doctor had just finished an examination and was making notes on the medical record.
He looked up when he heard the noise, "You are...?"
"We're friends of Elara, here to see her son."
Sarah naturally took over the conversation, "Doctor, how is he?"
The doctor let out a heavy sigh, put away his pen, and said, "This poor child! The cancer cells in his brain have already spread, now pressing on the optic nerves, and he can't see."
The three of them were simultaneously shocked by this news.
It seemed that Elara and this child were indeed very unfortunate.
No one knew the truth, and it was precisely because the child couldn't see that he hadn't realized his mother, Elara, had been replaced by Lisa. He would never have the chance to see his true mother again.
Francis looked sympathetically at the child on the bed and asked in a deep voice, "Can't chemotherapy control it?"
"Ms. West's financial situation has been poor, delaying the best treatment period. A hasty surgery might be even more dangerous. Now, chemotherapy can only control the further spread of cancer cells. As for the rest..."
It all depended on luck.
Although the doctor didn't spell it out, Sarah could tell from his expression that the situation was not optimistic.
She couldn't bear to see children suffer.
Antonio noticed her expression and patted her back comfortingly, "Doctor, please do your best to save this child."
"It's my duty. I'll do my best." After saying this, the doctor left, and the ward suddenly became quiet, as if they could hear the child's labored breathing.
The three of them felt a bit distressed.
Sarah pursed her lips and said, "I can't believe such a young child has endured so much."
Francis said in a deep voice, "When Elara wakes up, let's see what she needs. I'll do my best to help her."
Just because she saved Ryan, she deserved this.
Back in the ward, Lisa had woken up and was comforting the crying Ryan. The other three children stood by, looking somewhat out of place.
Sarah walked over to them and sincerely said, "Elara, thank you for saving Ryan earlier."
Lisa had been crying, but seeing them return, she quickly wiped away her tears and struggled to get up, "Mrs. Valencia, I don't know what to say. This is what I should do. Ryan not being hurt is the most important thing!"
"You're injured, so rest well. Don't move." Sarah pressed her back onto the bed, "You saved Ryan, so you're our benefactor. It's only right to thank you."
"Sarah is right." Francis also stepped forward, his expression more sincere than before, "I want to thank you for saving my son. If you need any help, just let us know."
From the moment they saw Elara's son, their perception of Elara had changed.
A mother who worked hard for her seriously ill son deserved respect and understanding.
Lisa was very flustered and repeatedly thanked them.
"Elara, please don't say anything more about gratitude!" Ryan, feeling guilty and distressed, helped her adjust the blanket with his small hands, "My dad and mom have already said so. Don't refuse anymore. Resting well is the most important thing."
Sarah watched Ryan's attention entirely on Elara and smiled, "Yes, you should rest well first."
She then tried to pull Ryan, "How about we sit on the sofa over there for a while? We shouldn't disturb..."
"I won't go!" Unexpectedly, Ryan dodged her hand and didn't look at her. "I want to stay with Elara, or she'll be in pain."
Sarah fell silent.
Ryan seemed to like Elara too much. He was never this clingy.
However, Sarah didn't think much of it. After all, Ryan had just gone through a life-and-death situation, and his emotions were unstable, which was normal.
Antonio put his arm around her shoulder, "Sarah, you've been walking for a long time. Sit down and rest for a while. What if your legs cramp again?"
Sarah snapped out of it and smiled.
They all sat on the sofa nearby, and the children didn't speak.
Ryan seemed to have ignored everyone else.
He held Elara's hand tightly, comforting her in a low voice, saying he would blow on her wound to make it stop hurting.
Sarah watched, feeling inexplicably uncomfortable. Maybe she was too sensitive.
Before long, Ryan fell asleep on the bed, sniffling.
Elara gently patted his back with one hand, smiling like a kind mother.
At this moment, Ryan, in his sleep, murmured. "Mommy."
Sarah responded softly and was about to check on Ryan when she saw him snuggle against Elara's hand, saying, "Mommy, it doesn't hurt. I will blow on it for you."
Sarah froze.
Then she watched as Elara patted Ryan's head with her other hand, softly comforting him. Ryan's furrowed brows relaxed.
Antonio also saw this scene, his brows furrowing tightly. He got up to take Ryan away from the bedside.
Sarah quickly stopped him, shaking her head with difficulty, "Let him sleep for a while."
Half an hour later, Lisa's IV was finally finished. The doctor came to remove the needle and told her to rest well.
Sarah walked over to take Ryan's hand and said softly, "Ryan, let's go home and let Elara rest well in the hospital, okay? When she recovers, she can come back to our house."
"No." Ryan pulled his hand away, "You guys go home. I want to stay here with her!"
"No." This time it was Francis who spoke.
His tone wasn't heavy, but it carried an undeniable authority, "Elara needs to rest. What use is it for you to stay here? Go home."
Lisa's eyes flickered slightly, and she smiled, "Ryan, be good. I'll get better soon. You go home with your dad and mom first."
Ryan reluctantly agreed.
He looked at her seriously, "Then you have to rest well and get better soon. I'll be waiting for you at home!"
Lisa nodded gently.
Sarah watched their reluctant farewell and felt that since earlier, there seemed to be a strange magnetic field between them that no one else could enter.
This feeling made Sarah uncomfortable.
Leaving the ward, Ryan and Francis got into a car, both worried, clearly still concerned about Elara.
Sarah felt like a part of her was missing. She turned to Antonio and asked, "Do you think I've been too negligent?"
Was she not good enough to Ryan? Otherwise, why did he prefer Elara, who had only been in their home for a few days, over her?
