Chapter 484 The Police
Sarah felt nervous, her eyes darting around in search of something to defend herself with. However, the nurse's station stood vacant; all needles and medical supplies were securely locked away in the medication room. Besides a chair and the trash can, there was nothing within reach.
Resigned to her fate, Sarah took a deep breath, holding the lid of the trash can, ready to use it to make her escape.
The man seemed only a step away.
Suddenly!
"I'm exhausted. You guys are too much. Luckily, I scored well on my exams and got directly into the VIP nursing department. Otherwise, I'd be worn out and bleeding from the stomach like you!"
"Are you still making jokes? Don't make me report you to go help in the emergency room. Eat your supper quickly. Who knows what might happen later on?"
Conversations were coming from the elevator entrance; it was Kevin's personal nurse!
A wave of relief washed over Sarah!
In the blink of an eye, she witnessed the man pause upon hearing approaching footsteps, then swiftly turn and dash down the fire escape corridor.
Sarah breathed a sigh of relief and jumped up!
Without a second thought, she rushed to Kevin's room and pulled out his IV.
The nurse who arrived was startled and rushed in after her. "Ms. Miller, what are you doing? Mr. Jerrett's medication can't be stopped!"
Without any explanation, Sarah pressed the emergency call button. "Someone injected an unknown substance into Mr. Jerrett's IV just now. Send someone to check immediately!"
Sarah's words shocked the nurse!
"What? Mr. Jerrett never takes medication at night. His condition requires rest, which is why I turned off the corridor lights to help him sleep better. No one would come here, and there are only two of us on duty on the entire VIP floor. We only went down because we heard the emergency bell, and it was only for five minutes."
Hearing this, Sarah was even more terrified. Indeed, that male nurse was not from the hospital at all!
After the alarm was pressed, a group of doctors and nurses hurried over. Sarah asked around, but no one knew who that male nurse was.
She couldn't worry about that now. "Quickly, test the substance in the IV line. I need to know what's in it!"
Given the gravity of the situation, the doctors and nurses didn't dare delay and immediately took Kevin's IV to the lab for testing.
The test results came back quickly, confirming her fears: the medication harbored a compound capable of dulling and damaging the brain, silently wreaking havoc.
Especially for an elderly person like Kevin, these symptoms could easily be mistaken for signs of dementia, leading to a gradual loss of consciousness and, ultimately, loss of life. What made it particularly terrifying was that once the substance entered the body, it would conceal itself within the cells, rendering it extremely cunning and impossible to trace for any clues.
It was diabolically clever!
If Sarah hadn't accidentally witnessed someone injecting this substance into the IV, no one would have known that Kevin's current condition was the result of foul play!
Kevin's prolonged unconsciousness and declining physical state stemmed from this medication.
Sarah's shock was palpable as she reviewed the test results; she had never fathomed such malevolence towards a gravely ill elderly person.
Even if it were shareholders of the J&K Group fighting for shares of the company, there was no need for such vicious tactics.
No matter what, the J&K Group wouldn't fall into the hands of these shareholders; after all, there was still a biological daughter in the picture.
Speaking of the biological daughter, Sarah felt an even bigger headache coming on.
"Ms. Miller, we've checked the hospital's surveillance, but so far we haven't been able to find any leads."
The doctor's words startled Sarah, prompting her to immediately call the police without hesitation. She would leave in a few days and desired swift apprehension of the perpetrator to ensure her peace of mind before departure.
The police responded promptly, initiating a thorough investigation that lasted until dawn broke.
The male nurse was very good at disguising himself, avoiding all the surveillance cameras. The only thing the cameras had captured was a figure from behind.Sarah hadn't seen his face, and there was no way to pursue him at the moment. They could only tighten security around Kevin's room to prevent similar incidents from occurring. For now, the investigation had to start with Kevin's social connections.
Sarah, who hadn't rested well all night, was now even more exhausted, both physically and mentally. Even with the police involved, she had to wait for the results of the investigation.
The man seemed to appear and disappear without a trace, and it was unclear who was behind it all.
The police questioned Sarah for details, but she knew little about Kevin's grievances with others.
"I... I'll help you contact his biological daughter," she said. "She will liaise with you afterward. I am truly sorry."
Sarah walked to a secluded spot and took out her phone, looking at Serene's name with a flash of disgust in her eyes.
At that moment, Serene was sleeping in the old Jerrett family house. She didn't need to pretend to be pitiful in the hospital anymore since she had already achieved her goal and had an inextricable relationship with Antonio. She had taken care of everything behind the scenes and wasn't afraid of Antonio investigating.
Therefore, Serene moved back home from the hospital early; she didn't want to be in those small hospital rooms anymore.
Serene was sleeping soundly, dreaming of her aspirations for a beautiful future life. She even dreamed of marrying Antonio and having children, and the dream was so vivid that she didn't want to wake up even when her phone rang.
But the caller was persistent and didn't hang up, leading an irritated Serene to sit up in bed."It's not even dawn yet. Who's making so much noise?" She picked up and her expression turned odd.
"Why is Sarah calling me?" Serene muttered to herself and took a long time before answering the phone.
"Hello, Sarah, why are you calling so early in the morning?" Serene feigned a sleepy voice.
Hearing her tone, Sarah couldn't help but feel frustrated, and she took a deep breath.
"Serene, you sure seem to be sleeping well," she said.
