Chapter 456 Brady

Brady felt something was amiss. "Ms. Jerrett, where are you? Are you still at the hospital?"

"I'm in the hospital, there's no need to worry," Serene replied, her voice strained. "I just thought I should give you a call. After all, it seems like you are the only one by my side now. To be precise, it seems like you are the only one willing to be friends with me, while my former close friends and my ex-boyfriend are no longer here."

As Serene spoke, her mood became more and more despondent, her voice barely concealing a sob, accompanied by the sound of howling wind.

"Ms. Jerrett, have you been in trouble lately? Is the consultation over?" Brady asked.

"It's nothing, really. I just wanted to call and say hello to you. I feel lucky that I met you and became good friends with you in the last stage of my life. You must live happily, that would give me peace of mind."

"Ms. Jerrett—"

"Goodbye, Brady. If possible, I hope that when I see you again, we'll both be fine."

With that, Serene hung up.

Listening to the dial tone on the phone, Brady couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.

The wind seemed too strong. It didn't sound like she was inside a hospital room or a garden; it sounded like she was somewhere high.

Brady pondered Serene's words about the last stage of life.

A sense of dread filled him, and he quickly turned the car around, heading straight for the hospital.

Sure enough, there was no one in Serene's ward. No one answered the phone, and neither the nurses nor the doctors knew where she had gone.

Brady thought about the situation carefully. Given Serene's limited mobility, she must still be in the hospital, and the only high place to hear the wind would be the rooftop.

With this thought, Brady hurried to the rooftop, and indeed, Serene was there.

At that moment, Serene was struggling to hold onto the railing, inching her way up, her one leg too weak to bear any weight.

Brady quickly ran over and pulled Serene away, exclaiming, "Ms. Jerrett, what are you doing?!"

Serene seemed to be in a state of shock, tears covering her cheeks and several lacerations on her body.

"Brady, you shouldn't have come. You shouldn't have saved me. Why did you bother to save me?" Serene cried uncontrollably. "My life is already hopeless, you really shouldn't have saved me."

"Ms. Jerrett, things aren’t that bad. Why must you give up on yourself?" Brady reasoned.

Serene shook her head repeatedly. "There's no chance left, no more."

Brady grasped Serene's shoulders firmly. "Ms. Jerrett, calm down. There are so many beautiful things in this world that you haven't seen yet. Please don't do anything foolish, okay?"

But at this point, Serene was beyond listening. She pushed Brady away with all her might and crawled desperately toward the rooftop edge.

"Please just leave me alone, okay? I have no hope left, what you telling me is just useless. Don't bother with me!"

Brady couldn't fathom the sudden intensity of Serene's emotions. However, it wasn't the appropriate moment to explore this. Without uttering a word, he moved forward to gently pull Serene back.

A faint smile graced Serene's face. She didn't truly wish to end her life, so she deliberately feigned weakness, allowing Brady to stop her effortlessly.

Seeing this, Brady immediately stood firmly between Serene and the rooftop railing, watching her warily. "Ms. Jerrett, please calm down, okay? No matter what happens, you can talk to me, and I will listen seriously!"

"I told you, leave me alone," she insisted.

Serene covered her face and cried, lowering her eyes just in time to see a box peeking out of Brady's pocket. Her gaze dimmed as she realized it contained the vitally important bracelet. This was the purpose behind her act today.

However, during this brief pause, Brady quickly seized the opportunity, lunged at Serene, and dragged her to safety!

Alert and quick, Brady moved to save her, but the box in his pocket tumbled out, nearly hitting the edge of the roof railing. Startled, Brady quickly reached for it.

While being restrained by him, Serene accidentally brushed against some scattered wire mesh nearby, causing a large gash on her leg.

"Ah!" Serene screamed in pain immediately, tears streaming down her face as she tightly clutched the wound on her leg. Frustration welled up inside her.

But upon seeing this, Brady was utterly bewildered, full of questions. "Ms. Jerrett, your leg..."

Noticing the strangeness in his voice, Serene shuddered inside. She realized that in the moment of intense pain, she had inadvertently given herself away.

It was a miscalculation!

Brady was no fool.

By now, how could he not see that Serene's leg was healthy?!

Serene was also getting nervous, having not expected her secret to be exposed like this...

Seeing her reaction, Brady narrowed his eyes and his tone became serious. "So, your leg isn't actually numb, nor is it severely injured to the point of needing amputation, right? Then why did you lie to me? Ms. Jerrett, tell me the truth. What are you really trying to do?"

Brady had already felt something off about Serene before.

But seeing her pitiful state in a wheelchair, he thought that perhaps her disability had made her act differently from other people…

Now that Serene was clearly hiding something, Brady couldn't help but suspect.

Serene furrowed her brows, thinking how annoying this situation was.

But the act had to go on, at least symbolically.

She frowned deeply. "Brady, what are you talking about? How could I—"

Before Serene could finish speaking, she saw Brady pick up an object from the rooftop and hurl it at her with force.

Serene was taken aback.

"Are you crazy?!" she exclaimed, dodging out of the way.

Seeing her leg move with apparent health, Brady's anger surged. "After all this, do you have anything to say? Serene, who exactly are you? Putting on such a performance, what are you really after?"

When Brady questioned her, Serene ceased pretending altogether. With only the two of them present, and neither Antonio nor Sarah in sight, everything felt simpler.

Serene brushed away the tears on her face and instantly returned to her usual self. "Brady, I actually quite like you. Being friends with you has been, well, comfortable at least."

Brady looked at her; her face was still pretty, but at that moment, he found her utterly terrifying.

"Unfortunately for you, you're out of luck," Serene said with a cold curve of her lips. "Give me the bracelet, and I might let you live."

That's when it clicked for Brady. No wonder Serene had been so agitated when she saw a picture of the bracelet on his phone—her declarations of liking it, her intense reactions—it was all about getting the bracelet...

But what did she want with the bracelet?
