Chapter 489 Leaving for Abroad Tomorrow
"The doctor I contacted is a leading authority on treating patients in a vegetative state. His schedule is jam-packed. He's at the hospital now but is set for a world tour of medical consultations in half a month, and he won't be back at his home institution for nearly eight months."
Brian spoke somberly, "Mom, this doctor has a track record of successful treatment. I think it's best if he treats him, but we have a timing issue to consider."
Sarah fell into deep thought.
Kevin's condition had just shown signs of improvement, and they had yet to catch the male nurse responsible for the drugging. Serene was like a wallowing mess, unable to stand on her own.
Sarah worried if it was safe to leave now... Would Kevin be in danger?
"You can’t leave now, Mom?" Brian asked.
Sarah shook her head.
No matter what, her brother’s treatment took priority over Kevin in her heart.
Besides, that was Serene's biological father. Once he recovered his memory, he probably wouldn't need her anymore.
Sarah spoke slowly, "I understand. According to what you're saying, it's best if I leave this morning. But it’s such short notice; it's unlikely your younger siblings can join me right away."
In Sarah's plans, she thought she'd at least have a month to prepare, enough time to fetch the kids, leave unnoticed, and get away from Antonio.
But now... the kids would have to stay stateside for the time being. Once Sarah had everything sorted out abroad, she'd arrange for them all to come over.
Brian understood the pickle Sarah was in and gave her his word.
"Don't worry about the hospital, Mom. I've got everything under control. You go ahead and fly over with Uncle. As for my siblings, we will stay put. Once you're settled, we'll see if you want to come back or stay there. Whatever you decide, we'll be on board."
Sarah trusted Brian's capabilities. With her reliable son around, she didn’t need to worry much about her children.
But then there was Antonio...
The last time he found out Sarah was leaving the country without him; he had a meltdown.
She had to use every trick in the book to keep him off her back.
Now, with plans changing again, Sarah didn't have the time to explain it all to Antonio – it was a no-brainer that he'd either insist on tagging along or throw a fit to stop her from leaving.
Besides, she didn't owe him any explanations.
Taking care of her brother was her business, and the best way to avoid complications was to keep Antonio in the dark.
"Well, darling, if everything is set with the flights, I better leave tomorrow to avoid any drama."
Brian fell silent for a moment before he hesitated, "Mom, leaving the hospital with Uncle is no small deal. Plus, who knows how long you’ll be overseas? Are you sure you don't want to tell Dad?"
A bitter feeling arose in Sarah's heart when she heard this.
Her eyes drooped, as she conjured images of Antonio in her mind.
Remembering his listless state, she closed her eyes.
After a while, she took a deep breath, "Don't tell him. This is our business."
Brian didn't press further; understanding that if his mother had decided on divorce, things must be beyond repair between them. His job was to protect his mom, to shield her from any more pain.
"I get it, Mom. Get some rest tonight. I'll send someone to pick you up before dawn. We can steer clear of Dad's watchful eyes then."
"Okay."
After hanging up, Sarah felt emotionally drained. She lay staring at the dim ceiling, sorrow welling up in her eyes.
The recent chaos was overwhelming, too much for her to want to revisit.
Let it be.
Forget Antonio, forget Serene.
Whatever happened now, nothing mattered more than getting her brother the help he needed.
Maybe leaving now and taking a step back for a while would give her a clearer perspective on the future with Antonio – or if there was even a future at all.
The next day, before dawn had broken.
Brian discreetly arranged a private jet and a professional medical team to escort Brady from the hospital.
They carefully transferred Brady onto a stretcher, keeping it under wraps, and escorted him to the airport, making sure he boarded first.
After finalizing the transfer paperwork for Brady at the hospital, Sarah would meet them at the airport a little later.
After taking care of everything else, Brian made a call to Sarah, "Mom, Uncle successfully boarded the flight. No need to worry."
"Good. As soon as the transfer paperwork is done, I'll head to the airport. How are things on Dad's end?"
"He hasn't noticed anything yet. I've been careful to stay out of sight, and we have someone planted in Uncle's room to throw him off. They won't suspect a thing unless they get too close."
Sarah nodded, "Okay, I got it. Brian, pick up your brother and sister and bring them to the airport. I want to say goodbye."
"I'm on it. The car I arranged is already waiting outside the hospital. Just hop in after you're done with the paperwork."
"Will do."
After hanging up, Brian quickly made his way back home. He had sneaked out earlier, worried that Antonio might become suspicious if he noticed his absence.
He hustled back, only to come across Antonio, who was starting to prepare breakfast. "Where've you been?"
Antonio seemed surprised to see Brian returning from outside.
