Chapter 639 Your Son Can't Handle It
The dim lighting in the hallway was mesmerizing. Alex stood at the door of the room for a while, then turned to look at the door separating him from Sofia.
Inside, it was silent. He didn't know if she was already asleep.
But whether she was asleep or not didn't matter. Given the situation, they both needed to calm down.
Alex reached into his suit pocket, feeling the hard object inside.
Last time, when he went to an auction with Sarah, he immediately set his sight on this bracelet. Both its design and symbolic meaning seemed to be made just for Sofia.
He bought it without any hesitation.
He had planned to give it to her as a birthday gift, thinking it would make Sofia very happy.
After some thought, Alex decided he still wanted to give her the bracelet.
He had even decorated the house nicely and made a "love scrapbook," which was quite out of character for him, just waiting for Sofia to come back and look at it together.
But now it seemed like only Sarah could help him pass the bracelet to her.
He glanced at the door one more time, made a phone call as he went downstairs, and then took a cab to the hotel where Sarah was staying.
Sarah had informed the receptionist in advance, so after Alex arrived, he went upstairs smoothly.
Sarah poured him a glass of water, looking quite surprised.
"What brings you to H City?"
Alex took a sip of water and hesitated for a moment, then said with a bitter smile, "When you ask like that, I don't even know why I came."
Rather than seeing all that, he might as well not have come.
But he still took out the jewelry box from his bag and explained his purpose.
Seeing his mood, Sarah frowned and asked, "Why don't you give it to her yourself? What happened?"
Alex hesitated for a moment, thinking there was no point in hiding it, and told her about the argument with Sofia, self-deprecatingly saying, "Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part. She doesn't need me at all."
"No way!" Sarah sighed. "On Sofia's birthday, the person she most wants to see is definitely you."
She remembered that Sofia's birthday was in two days and had already prepared a gift. She was worried that if they couldn't return from H City, they would still need to celebrate Sofia's birthday properly.
She didn't expect Alex to come on his own.
This should have been a good thing; it shouldn't have ended like this.
She wanted to say something comforting, but matters of the heart are only truly understood by those involved. She didn't know what to say for a moment.
Alex could understand Sarah's kindness.
But seeing Sarah in such a poor state, he didn't want her to worry about his problems.
He forced a smile and said, "Our relationship has always been different from ordinary people's. Let's leave it at that. You don't need to worry about us."
Then he looked at Sarah with concern.
"But you, why have you become so weary in such a short time since we last met? Has something happened?"
Before coming to H City, Alex had been leading a team on an expedition in the West, a desolate place with no internet, so he was not very clear about things on the Internet
He had been in a rush to see Sofia and hadn't had time to catch up.
Hearing his question, Sarah's mood suddenly dropped.
She forced a smile, her eyes full of bitterness. "Nothing much! Just some recent events."
Seeing her expression, Alex was already certain something serious had happened.
If it weren't something serious, Sarah would never show such a helpless look in front of others.
He asked with a frown, "What happened exactly?"
He was determined to find out.
Sarah pinched her forehead, and Alex's reminder brought back all the messy issues at the company.
She and Alex had always been close, with nothing to hide from each other.
Most importantly, he would find out sooner or later.
Before speaking, Sarah specifically emphasized, "I'm telling you this, but don't tell Brian."
Brian was currently abroad, and unless he was specifically looking for it, he probably wouldn't see the news from the domestic media.
Brian was already having a hard time managing the company, and she didn't want to worry him further.
Alex neither agreed nor disagreed, instead saying, "Just tell me what's going on!"
Sarah proceeded to explain the recent incidents involving both companies and also disclosed her reasons for coming to H City.
In short, the recent events, if not handled properly, could be a disaster for the Valencia family.
Alex was also furious, saying indignantly, "That Benjamin, he looks like a gentleman but how could he do such things! Backstabbing, it's despicable!"
Sarah had already been angry and now comforted him instead.
"It's also our fault for not being prepared, giving him the opportunity."
"That's true, but he didn't have to go this far!"
Now, the Valencia family was directly pushed into the spotlight, and any misstep could drown them.
Could that man live with a clear conscience?
Sarah sighed and said, "I'll find a way."
Alex scrutinized her, feeling that something was amiss.
Sarah wasn't the type to be easily defeated. If it were just company matters, she would be full of energy and not looking so haggard.
"Is there something else?"
Alex looked at her with concern, "I may not be able to solve it, but talking about it might make you feel better."
Sarah was stunned, and for a moment, tears almost welled up.
She lowered her eyes and, after a while, softly said, "Antonio's body was found recently. The detailed DNA match confirmed it is indeed him."
Her greatest hope all along was now gone.
Alex's lips moved, but he didn't know what to say.
Nothing would help; only those who have experienced it can understand the pain.
After a moment of silence, Alex's phone suddenly rang in his pocket.
It was Brian calling to discuss work.
After discussing work, they chatted casually for a bit.
Alex mentioned that he had come to H City and met Sarah, then hesitated, occasionally glancing at her, unsure of what to say.
Brian sensed something was wrong and asked, "What's going on? Is there something wrong?"
Hearing his voice, Sarah knew what Alex was thinking and quickly signaled him with her eyes while shaking her head, almost ready to intervene physically.
Hadn't they just agreed not to tell him?
Alex could only laugh awkwardly. "Nothing's wrong."
Brian was indeed clever. How could he not hear the reluctance in Alex's voice? His youthful voice took on a serious tone. "Mr. Harris, even though you are much older than me, if you are hiding something from me, there will be consequences."
It had to be said, when Brian put on an authoritative air, he really did resemble Antonio.
Alex was momentarily caught in a dilemma, so he had to turn his gaze towards Sarah. "You see, your son Brian is the boss. With this kind of questioning, no one can resist."
