Chapter 473 Can Love Disappear?
Antonio was at a loss for words.
He was a man who faced challenges head-on, but the coldness in Sarah's gaze was something he felt unequipped to tackle. He wasn't afraid of anything, except the look in Sarah's eyes right now.
With a tentative edge of desperation, Antonio reached out to Sarah. His hand, cautious and unsure, trembled slightly as he aimed to grasp her wrist. He wanted to establish some form of connection, to plead his innocence with a touch.
However, as soon as he touched her fingertips, Sarah disgustingly shook it off.
Her beautiful brows were furrowed tightly together, and her face full of disdain as she said, "Antonio, I don't want to see you."
The man's hand hung in mid-air.
Antonio took a deep breath, his eyes reddening. "Sarah, believe me, please... I was just drunk, I really don't know what happened, but I can assure you, I absolutely did not lay a finger on Serene."
"Enough!"
Sarah interrupted sharply, "How can you assure me? The marks on your neck? The lipstick stain on your shirt? Or you being naked under the same quilt as her?!"
As she spoke, she realized how shrill her voice had become. Sarah turned her head and glanced at Brady who was lying in the hospital bed, then started pushing Antonio out.
She was nearly breaking down; she couldn't believe that Antonio was still lying to her at this point. Even though the facts were right before her eyes, he was still making assurances to her. Since when had the word 'assure' become so easy to utter?
Antonio didn't know how to explain either, having drunk too much and too quickly. He remembered nothing of what happened after he got drunk…
“Sarah, believe me just this once…"
"Get out, I don't want to hear any more of your excuses."
Seeing the rejection on Sarah's face, Antonio suddenly felt a fear of losing her and blurted out in panic, "I chose to believe you about the photos with Asa Donat; can't you give me a chance in return now?!"
At the mention of Asa Donat, Sarah seemed startled, freezing momentarily.
She looked at Antonio incredulously and said, "What did you say..."
Antonio bit his tongue hard, regretting his word choice. He must be crazy to bring up such a matter at this time. He hurriedly said, "I’m sorry, I misspoke. It's my fault..."
Sarah closed her eyes and took a deep breath, her face weary.
"So in your heart, you still don't trust me about having nothing to do with Asa Donat, do you? By bringing it up deliberately at a time like this, are you expecting me to feel grateful that you didn’t pursue the matter between me and Asa Donat, and in return, I'm expected not to inquire about whatever went down between you and Serene?
Antonio rubbed his hair in agony, unsure of how to answer Sarah. "No... it has nothing to do with him. I misspoke. Let's stick to the facts, all right?"
"Feeling guilty, are you?" Sarah scoffed coldly, clearly having lost all hope.
"Don't treat me like this, Sarah, please?" Antonio said in a mix of anger and sadness.
Sarah was taken aback for a moment, "You think I'm... being deliberately provocative?"
Besides feeling angry, an indescribable bitterness spread through her heart.
Again, Antonio regretted his words as soon as they were out, wishing he could slap himself, and he quickly apologized, "I’m sorry, Sarah. What I mean is, I trust you, and I want you to trust me this once, okay? I really didn't do anything."
All Antonio wanted now was for Sarah to calm down so he could explain everything to her.
Sarah fell silent for a long time, then let out a sigh. "Fine, let’s talk outside. I don’t want us disturbing my brother here; he's a patient."
With that, Sarah headed out of the ward with heavy strides.
Antonio, eager to explain and noticing nothing amiss as Sarah’s demeanor stabilized, relaxed a bit and rushed after her.
As soon as he closed the door to the ward behind them, Antonio grabbed Sarah's hand.
"Sarah, listen to me, what happened today was an accident. I did drink, and that alcohol…"
"You had to drink it, because not drinking would cause unnecessary trouble. And after drinking too much, you had to let Serene, who couldn't even stand up, take you back to the hotel room. Then you passed out and knew nothing of what happened, am I right?" Sarah interrupted Antonio.
Her eyes were devoid of any emotions. They were terrifyingly calm.
Antonio was speechless, his fingers trembling, and panic grew inside him.
"Sarah, it's not like that... let me explain a full story, please."
"There's no need to say more." Sarah shook her head quietly, retracting her hand, "There’s no need for words. I believe you. No matter what you say, I believe you. Are you satisfied now?"
Antonio felt that overwhelming sense of losing Sarah again, and he quickly embraced her tightly. "Please, Sarah, don't shut me out. It's my mistake, entirely mine. I shouldn't have spoken those words about you; I shouldn't have let anger take over. Can't you find it in yourself to stop this? If you need to, hit me, yell at me—just don't be like this, all right?"
Sarah showed no response, her expressionless face looking at Antonio's trembling arms.
"Antonio, I already said I believe you. Isn’t that enough?"
Antonio shook his head repeatedly, gripping her even tighter, "It's not like that, Sarah, really it isn't."
Sarah let out a pained hiss.
Startled, Antonio immediately checked on her and saw the bruises intermingling on her arm — marks that weren't just on her arm but everywhere.
Antonio exclaimed, "Sarah, what happened? How did you get hurt? What happened?!"
Sarah looked at Antonio with calm, unflustered eyes, blinked, and then let out a cold scoff. " It took you half an hour to realize I'm injured."
She looked indifferent. "Remember how you used to care so much? Even a minor mosquito bite would make you rush out to buy repellent. Now, it doesn't seem as important, huh? It's like love has faded away, hasn't it?"
