Chapter 702 The Woman Benjamin Truly Loves
Sarah's words actually implied that she didn't even intend for Benjamin to be the stepfather of her children.
He was just her lover.
A practice run.
Benjamin felt his heart stop, almost ready to be crushed.
The pain was unbearable for him.
The thought of Sarah being with another man, the children calling a stranger "Dad," made him want to commit murder.
He didn't speak, just held Sarah tightly in his arms, burying his head in her neck.
Only this familiar scent could calm the rage in his heart.
Sarah didn't want to force him to say anything either.
She didn't even know what she wanted to hear.
But when his warm tears fell on her neck, her heart trembled.
'Antonio, is he crying?' she thought.
Time seemed to stretch on endlessly, or perhaps it passed in the blink of an eye. Antonio finally lifted his head, his reddened eyes reflecting a steely resolve. He was ready to come clean.
He was going to tell Sarah everything!
No matter whether Sarah forgave him or not, at least she wouldn't have to suffer any longer with just the pain of his betrayal.
Antonio leaned in towards her forehead, his lips hovering as if he wanted to kiss her but hesitated.
"Sarah."
Sarah kept her eyes closed. "Mm?"
There was no extra emotion in her response, just a simple acknowledgment that made Antonio's heartache even more intense. "There's something I need to tell you."
Before he could finish, Sarah's eyes snapped open. "You don't need to tell me!"
She thought, 'What could he possibly say?
'Isn't he still planning to stay away from me?'
A wry smile appeared on her face. Whether she was angry or not, she simply didn't want to go through this conversation again. "Unless you're planning to cast everything aside and come back to me, just be a lover. You don't have to tell me anything. I don't want to hear it."
Antonio could hear the firmness in her voice, and all his words turned to bitterness.
Harold still hadn't been dealt with, and Antonio didn't even know the full extent of his plans. There were dangers everywhere.
He thought, 'How can I be reckless?'
'How can I return to her without being sure?'
For now, Harold had let his guard down, allowing Antonio to move between home and the Harrington Group. But if he stayed with Sarah, with so many people in the Capital city, how could he stay undetected?
Neither of them spoke further. Though Sarah was a bit disappointed, she was exhausted from the long period of stress and soon fell asleep.
Antonio listened to Sarah's steady breathing, feeling a mix of satisfaction and heartache. He sighed, mentally resolving to settle the score with Harold as soon as possible.
Perhaps the scene was too peaceful and beautiful, as Antonio fell asleep without realizing it. When he woke up, it was deep into the night, and the phone vibrating broke the silence of the quiet hospital room.
He quickly fished out his phone to silence it, glancing worriedly at Sarah to make sure she wasn't disturbed.
Fortunately, she remained asleep.
Antonio carefully extracted his arm from beneath Sarah's neck, getting out of bed and checking the caller ID.
It was Harold.
All the tenderness vanished from Antonio's face.
Harold's late-night call suggested he was still uneasy, likely having heard about today's events at the company and now eager to probe further.
Antonio glanced back at Sarah and quietly stepped out of the room.
"Dad, why are you still up so late?"
Antonio's voice was laced with concern, but Antonio's face remained impassive.
Harold had returned to his room and was standing by the window as he spoke, "Your condition isn't stable yet. As a father, it's only natural for me to keep an eye on you. Or do you not want me to care?"
The latter part of Harold's statement carried the tone of a father-son banter.
Antonio wore a cold smile. "Of course not. I'm thrilled."
If not for the fact that Harold was behind all this, Antonio might have been genuinely touched.
Through the phone, the two men exchanged their hollow pleasantries before moving on to the main topic.
"I heard you abruptly ended a meeting at the office today. Did something happen?"
As expected, Harold had brought it up.
Antonio's smile turned sardonic. "Nothing happened. I just had a headache from remembering some old scenes."
"Make sure to rest when needed," Harold said before abruptly shifting gears. "I heard Ms. Miller from the Valencia family hasn't been to the office for a while. You're quite familiar with her, aren't you? Do you know what's going on?"
Although Antonio had known someone was keeping an eye on the Valencia family, hearing Harold's words made him tighten his grip involuntarily.
Harold's surveillance never wavered.
Antonio's tone remained calm. "Is that so? I've been preoccupied with projects lately, so I haven't paid much attention to the Valencia family. I'm not really close with Sarah, so I don't have any updates."
His voice was so composed it sounded genuine.
Harold bought it.
"Well, since you're on opposite sides now, it's fine for you to associate with her casually, but don't get too close."
Antonio gave a noncommittal murmur, then, as if a thought had suddenly occurred to him, added, "By the way, Dad, I've booked a flight abroad. I'm planning to visit my alma mater. Now that my memory is coming back, I need to find the woman I love."
Harold was silent for a moment.
"Since you've made up your mind, I can't really stop you.
"Just be careful out there and don't push yourself too hard. Recovering memories isn't something that happens overnight."
To Antonio, Harold's concern sounded more like an insult than a comfort, yet he forced himself to act touched. "Thanks, Dad. You take care of yourself too."
With that, they had said all that was necessary, and neither of them had more to add.
After ending the call, Harold stared at the darkened phone screen for a moment before letting out a couple of mocking chuckles.
He thought, 'Benjamin is such a fool! Actually going in search of his so-called beloved! I wonder if he'll ever realize that his true love is Sarah?' With that thought, Harold wore a mad, derisive laughter.
He thought, 'Benjamin will never have the chance to know!
'It's perfect this way. I will continue to torment Sarah and her family with his new identity, driving them all into the abyss with my own hands.
'I can hardly wait.'
Harold picked up his phone and dialed a number.
His voice was casual, as if he were playing with a mouse, "Benjamin will probably show up in a few days. Make sure you've got everything set up for him. No mistakes allowed."
On the other end, the reply came back, "Got it."
"And about his supposed girlfriend…"
Harold found the very idea laughable. He thought, 'Since Benjamin wanted to waste his time, let him.'
"Since he's so eager for it, let's give him a grand gift—his 'true love'."
