Chapter 72 Why Didn't Dad Come to See Me
That night, Sarah took Harper for a check-up.
"Hey, how many more tests does Harper need?" Sarah asked, itching to get her kid outta there and back home ASAP.
The nurse flipped through the medical records. "Uh, not many, just a brain CT and a paternity..." She clammed up real quick.
But Sarah caught it. "Paternity test?" Her heart dropped.
Harper was hurt, and now this? Antonio had to be behind it!
Seeing the nurse fumbling for words, Sarah lost it. "I'm Harper's mom. I deserve to know what tests you're running on my kid!"
She snatched the file from the nurse's hand.
Sure enough, "paternity test" was right there in black and white.
Sarah's brow furrowed.
Even though she had told Antonio Harper wasn't his, he still had doubts!
No way was she letting Antonio find out Harper was his!
Sarah rushed Harper back to the ward and called Brian. "Brian, I need you to hack into the hospital's system."
Early the next morning, Antonio got the paternity test results.
Feeling on edge, he flipped to the last page and read: [The paternity probability is 0.0001%.]
That cold line of text crushed his last hope.
He felt a sudden emptiness, but anger and hatred quickly filled the void, bursting from his sharp eyes.
He clenched the report, veins bulging on his forehead.
Sarah had another man's kid five years ago!
After the anger subsided, Antonio's expression darkened, his eyes filled with complex emotions.
He had liked Harper. Being with her softened his heart.
Whenever he was down, Harper's sweet smile lifted his spirits.
She was smart, and even though she threw tantrums sometimes, she was mostly well-behaved.
When she called him "Daddy" in her soft voice, he didn't mind; he even felt a bit satisfied.
It was the first time he felt this way.
He got used to having Harper around every day.
But now, he didn't want to see her anymore!
Because she was the product of Sarah's betrayal!
In the ward, Harper finally opened her eyes.
Her usually bright, watery eyes were now filled with confusion.
She stared at the unfamiliar ceiling, her mind blank.'Where am I? Where's Mommy?'
"Mommy?"
"I'm here!" Sarah's voice was full of relief.
She was filling the humidifier when she heard Harper's weak voice and rushed to her side. "You're awake! How do you feel? Where does it hurt?"
Harper blinked, memories flooding back along with the stinging pain at the back of her head.
She held her head, her pale little face scrunching up. "Mommy, my head hurts so much."
Seeing Harper in pain, Sarah's heart ached.
She gently moved Harper's hand away. "Harper, you hurt the back of your head. Don't touch the wound. Does it hurt a lot? I'll call the doctor."
"No need, Mommy, don't worry. It doesn't hurt that much." Harper's voice was weak, tinged with a bit of grievance.
Thinking about the abandoned warehouse, fear washed over her, her little heart pounding, her face turning even paler.
Especially the moment the rope broke—everything flashed before her eyes. She really thought she was going to die if Antonio hadn't caught her.
"By the way, where's Daddy?" Harper looked up at Sarah, her big eyes filled with longing. "Why hasn't Daddy come to see me? I want to see Daddy."
Sarah's eyes dimmed, and she hesitated.
Since Antonio had stormed off yesterday, he hadn't come back.
By now, he should have received the altered paternity test results from Brian.
Antonio had confirmed that Harper wasn't his daughter. Who knew if he'd go into a rage?
But one thing was certain: he wouldn't be kind enough to see Harper again.
Seeing the disappointment in Harper's eyes, Sarah frowned, unsure how to comfort her.
But then she thought this might actually be a good thing.
She had planned to take the kids away, and Harper had been too attached to Antonio. This was a chance to make Harper completely disappointed in him.
So Sarah decided to change the subject.
She walked over and poured a glass of water for Harper. "Are you thirsty? Have some water. Once you're feeling better, Mommy will take you home."
"Okay." Harper obediently took the glass and sipped the water, not asking anything more. But under her lowered eyelids, her eyes were full of grievance and sadness.
She was injured and hospitalized, but Antonio ignored her.
So Antonio didn't really like her after all.
