Chapter 1009 Tori, How Can You Forget Me
"Mrs. Harrington."
Eve had just opened the door when she saw Victoria kneeling by the bed, blood trickling down her hand.
Hearing Eve's voice, Victoria reached out for her, and Eve quickly rushed over to help her up.
Victoria grasped Eve's hand, relieved. She had feared she was abandoned.
Eve was her bodyguard; everyone said so.
Feeling reassured, Victoria let Eve help her back onto the bed.
"Did you hurt yourself anywhere?" Eve asked after pressing the call button.
Victoria shook her head but clung to Eve's hand, unwilling to let go.
Eve didn't understand why Victoria suddenly seemed so insecure, but she comforted her, "Mrs. Harrington, I'll always be here. Mr. Harrington is here, too. He just stepped out to take a call because he thought you were asleep."
As Alexander arrived, the doctor and nurse hurried in as well.
Alexander strode to the bedside, took Victoria's hand, and looked at her. "I was just taking a call."
Hearing his voice and feeling his warmth, Victoria's eyes inexplicably welled up with tears.
She had felt reassured with Eve there, but his voice stirred her emotions.
Alexander didn't say anything more, as the experienced nurse took over, administering the injection and reminding her, "Mrs. Harrington, you're getting a fever-reducing shot. You need to stay still, or you might hurt your delicate skin."
Victoria found the nurse's words amusing.
Her delicate skin?
Victoria listened intently, not daring to be distracted.
She felt cared for but couldn't help listening for Alexander's voice.
She sensed he was nearby but couldn't be sure.
Alexander stood by her side, watching her unease without moving.
After the doctor confirmed she was fine and left with the nurse, Alexander sat beside her, gently stroking her hair. "I'm here."
Just a few words, but they made her eyes sting with tears.
"You can go now," Alexander said softly to Eve.
As Eve left, Alexander lifted Victoria's legs onto the bed, covering them with a blanket.
Seeing her sitting there, listening intently, he said, "Lie down, okay?"
Victoria nodded and slowly lay down, supporting herself on the bed.
Alexander sat beside her. "Did you wake up before I took the call?"
Victoria didn't speak but lowered her eyes, acknowledging.
Alexander sighed and gently touched her hair. "Did you hear me say you used to love the snow?"
Victoria wanted to nod but didn't move.
She wondered, 'What is snow like?'
She had no memory of it.
But she felt him covering her with the blanket, and as he withdrew his hand, she couldn't resist holding onto it.
Alexander looked at his hand, held tightly by her, his dark eyes lifting to meet hers.
His gaze was deep, like the ocean, yet turbulent beneath.
She was clinging to him as if he were her lifeline.
She wanted him to stay with her longer.
She didn't want to be abandoned so quickly.
Whether he was her husband or just playing with her, as long as he didn't leave her.
She knew she couldn't survive alone. She felt that if she were abandoned, she would soon die.
So, she was afraid of death.
Very afraid.
She wanted a peaceful, warm life.
She didn't want to be cold anymore, didn't want to be humiliated or beaten, and didn't want to be thrown into the water again.
She longed for warmth.
"Tori, don't be scared anymore. You're home now. You're with your husband, your daughter. Everyone's gonna love and cherish you and help you get your sight back."
He spoke earnestly to her.
Victoria's tears fell, but she couldn't express her gratitude.
She just held onto his hand, tightly.
She didn't want him to leave.
At first, she was very scared, and even now, she was still afraid, but she feared losing him more.
She didn't know if she had always been this distrustful of others, but she hoped what he said was true.
That she was home, surrounded by people who loved her.
In the dead of night, she often woke up in terror.
She had thought about running away, but as he said, she would be seriously injured before she could escape.
If she had a frail constitution, she couldn't even live.
Victoria slowly released his hand, finally convincing herself to calm down.
Alexander leaned closer to her. "Tori."
As his hand neared her face, she curled up into a ball.
Alexander sighed helplessly.
Why did she have a fever after just one night?
Was he that terrifying last night?
But he hadn't done anything, had he?
"If you don't want to, we can sleep in separate beds starting tonight." He suggested.
He didn't want to scare her anymore.
Victoria shook her head repeatedly.
"Then I'll sleep on the couch or the floor."
He continued trying to make her feel safe.
But she still shook her head.
Alexander sighed again, patiently asking, "Then what do you want me to do?"
What did she want him to do?
Just to treat her like a person.
She didn't dare ask for too much.
She felt it was hard to breathe, maybe because of the fever. She felt useless and quickly became frustrated again.
Alexander gently stroked her hair, speaking softly, "How about I tell you about your childhood? You were so sweet and playful as a child. There were many girls around, but I always thought you were the prettiest, even more so than Diana."
Victoria listened, doubting his words.
She thought he must be lying. Everyone there said she was ugly.
"Later, you went abroad with your parents. When we met again, you had grown into a beautiful young woman, even more beautiful than I had imagined."
He continued, recalling their reunion when he had been smitten.
Victoria found it hard to believe.
Did he think she was beautiful? Was she hearing him wrong?
Her ears often hurt, and this morning, when she had a fever, they had hurt several times. She couldn't hear anything then.
"At the airport, I recognized you immediately. The first time you looked at me, my heart was in turmoil."
He said, smiling.
Victoria grew quieter.
He looked down at her, then kissed her forehead gently before continuing, "I was so anxious then. I thought my princess was back. Is she my princess? Her gaze was so unfamiliar. She had already forgotten me."
Alexander smiled again because now, she had truly forgotten him.
When they reunited, she had memories.
Even if she had forgotten his face, she knew they had played together as children. But now, she even thought he was lying about being her husband.
He murmured, "Tori, how could you forget me?"
