Chapter 888 He Came with an Excuse
"Mrs. Arabella Harrington called saying she wasn't feeling well. She didn't trust anyone else to bring Strawberry over, so I thought you could take Strawberry with you for a few days when you go back."
"Why don't we go back together, Mrs. Harrington?"
Eve thought it would be great if Victoria could go back.
"Hurry up and make some coffee; the guests are getting impatient."
Victoria changed the subject and walked away.
How could she possibly go back?
Alexander said he was giving her freedom, but it meant he didn't want to see her anymore.
This was fine. If they didn't see each other, there would be no worries.
Victoria went back to sit with Jason. Jason looked at Victoria and couldn't help but ask, "Do you think if we had been together back then, things would be better now?"
"We can never go back to the past."
Victoria was concise.
They had been classmates for so many years. If there were any feelings between them, Jason wouldn't have let his parents call off the engagement so promptly.
That playful engagement was just something the parents joked about. Over time, it seemed real.
So, Strawberry shouldn't go through something like that in the future.
She didn't want to arrange Strawberry's marriage; the kids should make their own decisions.
"Well, since I'm back and not leaving anytime soon, you can come to me if you need anything."
Jason had a decent job in a government department and genuinely felt he owed Victoria. He sincerely wanted to help her because of their past friendship.
"Okay."
Victoria agreed, but after Jason left, she lay back on the sofa.
Initially, she just had a severe cold, then she ate some spicy stir-fry that upset her stomach. She had only been feeling better for two days.
At dinner, Victoria suddenly said to the two people across from her, "Eve's birthday is coming up. You should go back and get your marriage certificate and then come back."
Frank was eager to get married but was a bit worried when he heard this.
Eve said, "Mrs. Harrington, we're not in a rush."
"I miss Strawberry. You can bring her back when you go to get your marriage certificate." Victoria said.
Victoria had other plans for them. They didn't need to stay with her for so long. As long as Strawberry came, they could come along too.
She intended to share all of this with them when Strawberry was coming back from there.
"I need to consult Mr. Harrington."
Frank quickly responded.
Eve couldn't help but look at Frank. If Alexander agreed, would they go back to get their marriage certificate?
Eve didn't mind marrying him, but given the current situation, she was worried about Victoria.
"Then go consult Alexander, but only tell him about getting the marriage certificate. Don't mention me."
Victoria thought for a moment and then instructed Frank.
She wanted her and Alexander to disappear from each other's lives, allowing everything to fade away over time.
After dinner, Frank made a call. Alexander was working and asked, "What did Victoria say?"
"Mrs. Harrington asked us to go back."
Frank was in the kitchen and glanced outside. Victoria was eating fruit and playing chess with Eve.
"Make sure everything is safe over there before you come back."
Frank agreed.
Alexander quickly hung up the phone but kept frowning.
Shoure knocked and entered Alexander's office, "Can someone else cover for me tomorrow? I need to take Janaye for a prenatal checkup."
Alexander looked at Shoure.
Those around him were either getting married, going for checkups, or taking care of pregnant women. It seemed he was the only one with free time.
"I understand."
"You agreed? I'll arrange for someone else."
Shoure was a bit relieved that Alexander agreed so quickly this time.
"I'll handle it."
Alexander said, staring at the documents on his desk.
Shoure glanced curiously at Alexander, then nodded, "Alright, I'll be off then. Call me if you need anything."
Alexander listened to the door close, then opened his phone and launched a flight booking app.
Eve and Frank went to the airport the day before Eve's birthday.
Eve was still a bit worried, "What if something happens to Mrs. Harrington while we're gone?"
"We'll move quickly. Besides, I have real-time monitoring of Mrs. Harrington's house and people stationed around. There won't be any problems."
Frank reassured Eve.
Victoria was urging them to go back and get their marriage certificate, probably to avoid delaying them.
Frank thought about this and held Eve's hand tightly. No matter what, they were going to be married.
But just after they left, it started raining heavily that night, and the power went out at Victoria's house.
Victoria tossed and turned, unable to sleep. The thunder and lightning continued to roll in.
Soon, she heard what sounded like a car stopping outside.
Since it was far away, she couldn't hear clearly. She thought she was being paranoid again and tried to calm herself by lying quietly in bed, staring at the ceiling.
'But getting up to check didn't take long.'
She thought, got up and went to the window, but there was nothing outside.
Victoria thought she was being too paranoid.
In this heavy rain, even thieves wouldn't come out, right?
But just in case, she turned on her phone.
The home surveillance had stopped working.
How could she forget about the power outage? She sat on the bed, staring at her phone for a while, but then she heard a noise downstairs.
There were two maids, but they were older. She didn't want to put them at risk, so she quietly went to the door and opened it a crack.
It sounded like someone was moving downstairs.
Victoria's heart was pounding faster and faster.
Could there be a thief out at this time?
She thought it must be a thief. If someone was targeting her, he would have come upstairs already.
Quickly, she dialed 911 and quietly locked her bedroom door.
Running away was not an option now; she could only do this.
Victoria looked around the room and found a baseball bat for defense. She grabbed it and went to the door to listen.
How could someone break in just after Eve and Frank left?
Given Eve and Frank's alertness, they should have noticed if they were being watched.
The more Victoria thought about it, the more nervous she became. She kept an eye on the downstairs and sent a message to the two maids, warning them about the thief and that she had called the police. She told them to lock their doors and stay safe.
Soon, the noise downstairs grew louder.
And the police car quickly stopped outside her house. She looked out the window and then heard what sounded like one of the maids' voices downstairs. She opened the door.
The downstairs lights suddenly flickered on, blinding her to the tall figure below, but she heard the voice.
"Mr. Harrington, what are you doing here?"
"I came to bring Strawberry over. Didn't you know the power went out?"
