Chapter 700 She No Longer Belongs to You
"Mrs. Harrington wants us to crash here tonight."
"Even if we don't head back tonight, can we dodge it tomorrow?" Eve asked.
Frank glanced at Eve, who was right up in his space, and felt a pit in his stomach. He then replied, trying to keep it cool, "Let's deal with tonight first."
Eve leaned back and ran her fingers through his hair. "Frank, Mr. Harrington just showed up and has been waiting at Mrs. Harrington's doorstep. You know he's onto us about Strawberry. He's just trying to take her away nicely. If we don't hand her over today, then tomorrow..."
"Whatever happens tomorrow, we'll handle it then," Frank said firmly.
"Stubborn," Eve muttered, letting go of his hair.
Frank turned to her. "What did you say?"
"I said you're too stubborn," Eve repeated, crossing her arms.
Frank saw her slightly smug look but then glanced at the sleeping Strawberry on the bed. He swallowed his pride and said, "I told you, Mrs. Harrington's parents once did me a huge favor."
"So now you gotta be loyal to Mrs. Harrington?"
"Unless something unstoppable happens," Frank replied.
"I get it. So no matter what goes down tomorrow, even if it gets ugly, as long as Mrs. Harrington wants you to stay here tonight, you're staying."
"Yeah," Frank admitted.
Eve lay down beside him, found a comfy spot to look at him, and murmured, "Frank, why did I follow you abroad? Is the food in Ankenra City not good enough? Or are there not enough guys?"
Eve didn't say more and dozed off on the same couch with him.
Frank had to stick by Victoria; he didn't want her to suffer too soon.
But Alexander knew he had a daughter. Given his cutthroat business style, he might wait one night, but by morning, if they didn't bring the kid back, Alexander would hunt them down.
By then, it wouldn't be the same as they thought.
By then, it wouldn't just be Victoria who'd suffer, but Frank too.
The snow was piling up, and the wind was howling.
This wasn't just a prelude to a storm; the blizzard had already hit in the dead of night.
Alexander stayed in the car, making all the plans.
Victoria stood by the upstairs window until she couldn't stand it anymore and retreated to the bed.
She bent slightly, feeling a bit more comfortable before lying down.
Frank wouldn't be back tonight, so she could rest and think about what to do tomorrow.
Or maybe she should sneak out while Alexander was asleep in the car and find them?
Then they'd start their escape.
She should've bailed earlier.
She shouldn't have clung to the warm memories of home.
She didn't like running, and she only felt safe here.
She wanted a stable life, simple and ordinary, as long as it was stable.
But clearly, she wasn't that lucky.
He never mentioned Strawberry, but...
She knew he was dead set on getting Strawberry.
The next morning, Victoria woke up groggy, instinctively grabbed her phone. She saw a message from Frank saying that if Alexander didn't leave, Frank would stay at the hotel.
She felt a bit relieved but had to get out of bed and walk to the window.
She wished Alexander's car had already left.
She wished he'd let her go.
She only had Strawberry while he could have many more kids.
But the car was still there, like a long, thick thorn in her heart.
A snowplow rumbled by, and the driver hopped out to knock on the door.
No answer. He peeked through the window, then glanced over at her house.
Victoria saw him hustling towards her door.
What was up with Alexander?
Did he crash in the car?
Victoria was confused. Not wanting to wake the neighbors, she grabbed a shawl and headed downstairs to open the door.
The driver asked if the car was hers. She said no, but it was parked at her place. She went to check, and soon the neighbors came out to shovel snow, gathering at her door.
"Sweetie, why's your husband sleeping out here?"
"Did you guys have a fight?"
"It was like minus 53 degrees last night. Wake him up, or he'll freeze!"
The kind neighbors chimed in.
She had to walk over, feeling a bit annoyed.
As soon as she looked inside, Alexander woke up and stared at her.
Then the car window rolled down, and he looked at her with a pale face. "What's going on?"
His voice was raspy and weak.
Victoria's heart skipped a beat.
He was clearly sick.
The neighbors helped him into her house.
One enthusiastic neighbor said, "Sweetie, let's get him to the bedroom. You should find him some meds."
Victoria's mind felt like it was stuffed with cotton; she couldn't say anything and mechanically went to the kitchen.
But what was wrong with him?
Shouldn't he go to the hospital if he was sick?
If he took the wrong meds and died...
At least no one would fight her for her daughter.
But at that moment, Victoria stood in the kitchen, her head pounding.
Alexander was helped into the bedroom. After being told to rest, the neighbors left. He pressed his forehead, trying to calm down, when he heard the phone ring.
He instinctively picked it up and glanced at it.
Adrian?
Alexander, driven by a sudden impulse and not quite sure why, picked up the phone and said, "Hello?"
"Alexander?"
Adrian was shocked to hear Alexander's voice.
How could it be?
"It's me. What's up?"
"Why do you have Victoria's phone? Alexander, Victoria is mine now. You can't take her from me!"
"You're overthinking it," Alexander said and hung up.
Adrian stared at his phone screen, puzzled. Overthinking it?
Adrian immediately found Ava. "Book me a flight. I need to get back to Elysium Country."
"You just got here, and now you're leaving already?"
"I have to go back immediately."
"Try it if you insist."
Ava decided not to indulge him this time.
Adrian quickly caught up with her. "Ava, don't push it. You work for me."
"Who works for you?" Ava turned and glared at him, then continued walking away confidently.
Adrian had no choice but to follow her and explain.
Meanwhile, Alexander was still lying in bed, feeling dizzy and freezing.
Indeed, he had been running a fever back home.
Victoria sent the neighbors away and brought the medicine upstairs. When she saw him lying in her bed, she suddenly couldn't move forward.
Her phone rang again on the bed, snapping her out of it. She quickly walked over.
It was Eve. She had a bad feeling and hurried to grab the phone.
Unexpectedly, he grabbed her wrist first. The just-awake Alexander suddenly opened his eyes and looked straight at her. "She doesn't belong to you anymore."
