Chapter 618 Return
When Alexander saw Victoria again, it was at the VIP exit at the airport.
Behind him, a bustling crowd surged, but ahead of him, there was only a woman walking towards him.
She came out from inside, looking at him with a comforting smile, trying to stay calm. "I told you I'm fine."
Suddenly, a thief appeared halfway, and just as the knife grazed her collarbone, Frank knocked the thief out with a single punch from behind.
Alexander uttered no words, simply enveloping her tightly within his embrace.
Victoria raised her hand somewhat uncomfortably, gently resting it on his waist.
She experienced a sense of being cared for, a concern directed towards her that she hadn't felt in quite some time.
She almost couldn't hold back her tears, tilting her head back to stop them from falling.
She wouldn't cry easily anymore unless necessary.
"Let's go home." Alexander quickly released her, speaking softly.
"Okay," Victoria agreed.
Then her hand was enveloped in his warm palm, and he led her out of the airport.
Frank parted ways with them after returning to the city, and Alexander drove her back to the Harrington Mansion.
——
At the Harrington Mansion.
"Oh my God, is that place really that unsafe?" Eloise listened to Victoria recounting the situation, feeling a bit like she was there herself.
"After calling the police, they said they hadn't encountered such an incident in many years," Victoria explained to Eloise.
Upon listening, Arabella couldn't help but frown, "Could it be that someone instigated it?"
"Who else knew you were on a business trip there?" Brett immediately asked.
"Logically, I only told one person." Victoria turned her gaze to Alexander, who had been silent diagonally across from her.
Alexander knew she was referring to him and looked up to meet her gaze.
Then everyone turned to look at him, full of suspicion.
Alexander took a deep breath before he said, "You can't seriously think I would hire someone to harm my own wife, right?"
"Think about those horrific wife-murder cases," Eloise said, though she didn't mean to imply her grandson would do such a thing. She actually trusted Alexander.
At this moment, both Arabella and Maximus had thought of the same person. However, it wasn't appropriate for them to speak up now.
As dinner was almost over, Alexander suddenly turned to Victoria beside him and asked, "Shall we rest early tonight?"
Victoria looked at him, immediately recalling what he had said before she left, and agreed, "Sure."
"Alexander, don't rush back to your room yet, I have something to discuss with you." Maximus suddenly called out to him.
Confusion filled Alexander's gaze as he glanced at Maximus. Since her return, they hadn't had a chance to be close.
Usually, the elders would encourage them to rest early in such situations. What was different today?
Alexander was called to the study by Maximus. After the door closed, Maximus walked in unhurriedly and asked, "What do you think about Victoria getting hurt?"
Alexander looked up at Maximus, who had stopped in front of the desk and turned to look at him. "No matter what I think, without evidence, it's useless."
"So you also suspect it was that girl from the Montgomery family?" Maximus, though usually gentle and calm, was a shrewd man who had kept the Harrington Group thriving.
Alexander listened to his question and answered truthfully, "Yes."
"If it really leads to that girl, would you send her to prison?" Maximus asked calmly.
Alexander remained silent, not answering immediately.
Unable to discern Alexander's thoughts, Maximus asked again, "Or should I ask, do you really have no feelings for Isabella at all?"
"Why would you think that? I've never had romantic feelings for Isabella." Alexander was certain of this.
"Since you returned from out of town, Victoria has suffered too much." Maximus looked at him seriously. His words served as a reminder.
Alexander's expression grew colder.
"Victoria might not truly believe it was just a thief, an accident, you understand?" Maximus said.
"I know." Alexander didn't say much, but after discussing the topic tonight, he understood that Victoria had actually become suspicious the moment she looked at him.
However, she wouldn't express her true thoughts in front of the elders. Or, she wouldn't tell him either.
This distrust had been there for a long time.
Upon Alexander's return, Victoria had already taken a shower and adorned herself in a seductive nightgown.
"Finished talking with Dad?" she asked, then approached him, gently wrapping her arms around his waist.
Alexander looked down at her, immediately noticing the scar on her collarbone.
Just as she had shown him in the video, it wasn't deep. But her delicate, beautiful skin now had an unnecessary scar.
Alexander gently wrapped his arm around Victoria's shoulder, speaking softly, "I'll go take a shower."
"By the way, I already squeezed the toothpaste for you," she reminded him softly, still in his embrace.
"Got it," he replied, then let go of her and went to the bathroom.
Victoria stood there dazed, then sighed in confusion.
She didn't know what was wrong, but she felt that Alexander was in a strange mood.
She looked towards the bathroom, then told herself to let it go and not overthink.
She sat on the edge of the bed, feeling that this bed was much more comfortable than the one in the countryside.
During that week in the countryside, she hadn't slept well, especially after getting hurt. She almost had to rely on medication to sleep.
When Alexander came out again, he was wearing pajamas.
Victoria was still sitting on the edge of the bed, naturally looking at his waist, then looked up at him as he approached, smiling and gently tugging at his shirt, "Aren't you happy to see me?"
"Why would you think that?" he asked her calmly, still standing in front of her.
"Your face says 'I'm not happy'," Victoria softly reminded him.
Alexander smiled at her words, his eyes warming as he saw her hand tugging at his shirt.
How could he not be happy? He just...
"Do you remember you owe me a word?" Alexander slowly pinched her chin, his thumb brushing her lips, asking softly.
Victoria let go of his shirt and then slowly lay back.
His sexy fingers had to let go of her, but he still stood there silently.
Her slender legs moved on the bed, then she slowly moved back, smiling again when she reached the headboard. "I'll owe it for now."
Alexander didn't know how she managed to smile, but he couldn't.
"Come back," he suddenly said softly.
The smile on Victoria's face gradually disappeared.
That "come back" sounded like he was calling a pet to crawl back to him.
She still leaned against the headboard, her big eyes looking at him, but after a moment, she couldn't hold on and turned to lie on the pillow. "I'm so tired."
Less than half a minute later, she suddenly heard the door close.
Victoria lifted the blanket and looked in that direction. Alexander was gone.
