Chapter 254 He Demanded Her Promise
The ring found its home on her delicate finger, causing Victoria's heart to stall for a few moments. She had envisioned this scene countless times, but never under such circumstances.
Alexander cradled her hand, his gaze fixed on the engagement ring he had chosen for her. It was a simple yet elegant piece, perfectly complementing her fair, slender hand.
Victoria attempted to retract her hand, but Alexander's grip on her other finger tightened, causing a slight twinge of pain. In the next moment, she noticed his fingers clasping her original ring. "Don't," she protested.
"This is your ticket back," Alexander declared.
His words stirred a wave of sadness within Victoria, yet she softly countered, "Could there be another ticket?"
"Perhaps your first night?" Alexander suggested nonchalantly.
Victoria immediately withdrew her hand.
Alexander effortlessly removed the ring. Considering it belonged to his mother-in-law, he threaded it onto a string and tucked it into his jacket pocket.
Victoria's gaze remained fixed on that pocket. She had put on the wedding ring, but her mother's ring had been confiscated. Then...
"May I have my passport now?"
"I will personally take you to the airport," Alexander said.
Only then did Victoria look at him again. She also became aware of the intimate proximity between them. She had been in his arms all this while.
The shrill ring of Victoria's phone broke the silence. She quickly looked to the side. And Alexander noticed it was Joe calling.
He answered the call on her behalf, "Be there in half an hour."
Joe hesitated upon hearing Alexander's voice, then replied, "Okay."
Joe ended the call promptly. Although he was puzzled about their sudden togetherness, it was already 7 a.m., and he couldn't feign ignorance about the situation.
Rumors about Alexander's impending marriage had been circulating for a while, and a few days prior, whispers of him spending the night with a woman at his Regal Retreat house had surfaced. The woman's identity remained a mystery to the public, but those who had worked with Victoria could easily identify her. Thus, after the call, he quickly deduced their relationship.
"This is my phone," Alexander gently reminded her after hanging up.
"Hmm. Don't you like me answering calls for you?"
Victoria remained silent, her eyes hidden beneath her lashes. Alexander sighed and asked, "Have I ever done anything that pleased you, that made you happy?" They had known each other for so long. Could there really be nothing?
Victoria felt a slight sting where his chin had grazed her shoulder. She pondered for a moment before replying, "Boss, how could there be anything that displeases me?"
"I'm referring to as a husband," Alexander clarified earnestly.
As a husband, he hadn't really done anything to make her content or happy. He had left immediately after their wedding.
However... Victoria turned to face him, her vision blurred as she took in his features, and she said, "You're very handsome."
Alexander frowned.
"You also have a great physique."
"And you're very wealthy."
"Victoria." Alexander's tone was laced with displeasure.
He sought an answer about something he had done that had satisfied her.
Suddenly, Victoria felt a pang of guilt, regretting that he was unhappy.
"On the day something happened at my apartment, when you rushed over..." She struggled to find the right words. The mere thought of that day sent shivers down her spine.
"What?" Alexander prodded.
The memory of seeing him that day brought tears to her eyes. Her voice wavered as she confessed, "That made me feel very relieved."
Alexander tenderly cupped her face, taking in her tear-streaked visage.
A tear trickled down her cheek, landing on her lips. In that moment, Alexander couldn't feign indifference any longer; he leaned in and kissed her lips.
