Chapter 676 Did She Die or Not?
Maximus let out a heavy sigh and muttered, "Isabella and her crew got what was coming to them. Wonder if Victoria's in the loop."
"Even if she is, she ain't coming back," Alexander shot back.
Maximus gave his son another look.
With just the moonlight sneaking in through the window, he could barely make out the sadness in Alexander's eyes. He walked over and gave Alexander's shoulder a gentle pat, "Alex, you gotta take care of yourself."
"Yeah, sure," Alexander mumbled, not adding anything else.
Before heading out, Maximus noticed the wedding ring on Alexander's hand, gave his shoulder another pat, and left.
He knew Alex needed his space, and sometimes, he just didn't want anyone around.
It was late when Alexander finally dragged himself back to his room and headed straight for the bathroom.
After freshening up, he walked out and immediately spotted Victoria's photo.
That year, he had just gotten back from a trip, and the first time he talked to her alone was in this very room.
She was all shy and careful back then, probably 'cause of her secretarial gig, she didn't even seem like his wife.
Maybe he should've signed those papers back then, and none of this mess would've happened.
Eloise mentioned what injury Victoria had, and he knew about it. The doc had told him right away about her condition; she was beaten so bad her insides were messed up.
Alexander choked up, but his eyes got even sharper.
He slowly walked over to the sofa, and memories came rushing back.
They'd been through so much in this room.
So much it was impossible to count.
So much it felt like a lifetime ago.
He didn't know how long he stood there, but when he finally hit the bed, he tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
So when his phone rang in the middle of the night, he jumped up, answered it, and headed out.
At the club, Benjamin and William were already knocking back drinks. When they saw Alexander walk in, they asked, surprised, "Why'd you get here so fast?"
Alexander didn't rush to answer. He poured himself a drink, downed it, and then asked, "When have I ever been slow?"
Benjamin lowered his eyes, thinking hard. Like, back when he had Victoria, they could never get him to come out. But they didn't dare bring that up.
Soon, Benjamin noticed Alexander was drinking angrily again. He figured Alex was probably thinking about the days when Victoria was by his side.
But as friends, they actually wished Victoria was still around, even if Alexander would push them aside for her.
'Cause the current Alexander was so cold, no one dared to get close.
"I heard the Bryant family's daughter is chasing after you?"
"Which Bryant family's daughter?" Alexander asked.
"Daisy. Didn't she ask you out for lunch today? I heard she ran out of the restaurant crying. What'd you say to her?"
Alexander thought for a moment but couldn't recall. "Nothing much."
Seeing that Alexander didn't want to talk about it and seemed uninterested in everything, Benjamin thought for a moment and asked, "I'm heading abroad in a few days. Want me to check it out?"
Alexander looked up and immediately got what Benjamin meant by "check it out," but his eyes grew darker. "No need."
"Alex, do you really..."
"Don't say it," Alexander cut him off coldly.
Benjamin watched him pour another drink and fell silent.
How could they make Alexander happy again? Maybe there was only one way.
That was if the person rumored to be dead showed up in front of him again.
But they only heard rumors about what went down that day. When they got to the hospital, Victoria was still out cold.
Benjamin remembered that when Tessa saw Victoria's face, she immediately covered her mouth and started crying.
The scar wasn't that deep, but it was pretty obvious, running from the corner of her eye down to her neck.
And Victoria's overall condition? Even worse.
Later, while Alexander was still holed up in the private room, Benjamin and William were waiting for a car outside. William asked, "Is there anything we can do about Alex's situation?"
"Unless Victoria magically shows up in front of him."
"But will she come back?" William asked.
"If it were you, would you come back?" Benjamin shot back.
"I would," William said, the hopeless romantic. He didn't have anyone special yet, but he figured if he loved someone, he'd definitely come back.
Benjamin, though, just gave a bitter smile, "Unless something crazy happens, she ain't coming back."
That was why Alexander said she was dead.
He knew they'd never see each other again.
Victoria was dead set on not coming back.
If Alexander wanted to go looking for her, he would've done it ages ago.
It's been a year.
After they left, Alexander stayed in the private room, silently scrolling through his phone. His photo album was still packed with pictures of Victoria's beautiful face.
Sometimes he'd sneak pics of her while she slept because seeing her sleep so peacefully next to him made him feel like life was perfect.
He used to really think they'd be together forever, but they still ended up apart.
The next day, as soon as Alexander walked into the office building, Daisy was waiting there.
When he saw her, she gave a shy smile and said, "Hey."
Alexander squinted, looking at her coldly. "What do you want?"
"To pursue you."
Alexander ignored her shyness and nerves, turned around, and walked into the building. He thought, 'Pursue me? What a joke.'
"I'll wait for you to have lunch together."
Daisy looked at his back, wanting to catch up but held herself back, standing on tiptoe and shouting after him.
Alexander didn't stop.
The staff at the door were taken aback by Daisy's boldness.
Was Victoria really dead? There was already a woman eager to chase after Alexander.
Of course, Daisy wasn't the only one. Which heiress wouldn't want to marry him?
Daisy didn't get why he was so cold to women.
Around 11 AM, Tessa, in a blue long coat, showed up at the café.
Daisy waved her over. When Tessa sat down, Daisy smiled obsequiously, "Long time no see."
Tessa said, "Yeah, it's been a while. You've been so busy."
"Stop teasing me. I haven't worked in ages."
"Really? Then why didn't you hit me up before?" Tessa asked, giving her a sharp look.
"My mom told me not to bother you. You know how their generation didn't get along." Daisy made an excuse.
"Then why are you reaching out now?" Tessa crossed her arms, acting all high and mighty.
Daisy thought Tessa was an idiot. They were different ages and social circles, so there was no reason to contact each other. But now...
"Considering we're schoolmates, I wanted to ask you for some advice." Daisy put on her best sincere look.
Finally getting to the point, Tessa put down her hands, ordered coffee, and listened to Daisy.
Then she asked, "You don't really think Victoria is dead, do you?"
"Isn't she?" Daisy was surprised by the question.
"As far as I know, she's not."
Tessa had heard that Daisy wanted to marry Alexander and was always blocking him, but she didn't expect Daisy to come to her for help.
"Is Victoria still alive?" Daisy suddenly got nervous.
"Of course," Tessa said immediately.
"But she's been missing for a whole year," Daisy said.
"So what?"
"Could it be that she died somewhere, and you just don't know?" Daisy asked.
