Chapter 260 Aren't You Inviting Me In?
"Aren't you inviting me in?" Alexander asked.
Victoria, caught off guard, scrambled to regain her composure, her instincts urging her to extend an invitation.
"Victoria?" A voice, laced with a foreign accent, echoed from within the room.
Startled, Victoria spun around. Alexander followed her gaze, peering curiously into the room.
A young man, clad in a loose white bathrobe and comfortable slippers, emerged from the shadows.
Alexander's gaze lingered on the man's exposed legs before darting back to Victoria. He couldn't help but wonder why this stranger seemed so at ease in Victoria's home, as if he belonged there.
"This is Jason Sterling," Victoria introduced, her voice barely above a whisper.
A smirk tugged at the corners of Alexander's mouth. "It appears I've arrived at an inappropriate time."
Victoria, her gaze downcast, was still reeling from the shock of Alexander's unexpected arrival.
"I'll leave," Alexander announced, pivoting on his heel to depart.
Only then did Victoria dare to look at him. An instinctive urge to call out to him bubbled up within her, but she managed to swallow it down. They were no longer together, and she didn't want to give him any false impressions.
Yet, Alexander paused. He stood there, frozen in time, his grip on his coat tightening to the point of discomfort. Victoria watched him, her vision growing blurry with unshed tears. Then, he turned and began to approach her once more.
Alexander's determination was palpable, as if he had a mission to complete. Victoria felt a pull towards him, but she forced herself to remain by the door, silently observing his approach.
"Here, take this," Alexander said, not meeting her gaze as he fumbled in his coat pocket.
Victoria watched him, her heart pounding as she noticed the glint of his wedding ring. She quickly hid her trembling hand behind her back, but Alexander seemed oblivious to her discomfort. He retrieved a crumpled receipt from his pocket.
"You can make the payment directly from your phone," he instructed.
Victoria was taken aback. Unfolding the receipt, she discovered it was for the final payment.
"Have the windows been installed?" Victoria asked.
"Yes," Alexander replied, his tone somber.
"That's good," she managed to respond.
Victoria found herself yearning for something she couldn't quite put her finger on. Was it the home she had briefly shared with him? Or was it the memories they had created there? She couldn't help but feel a pang of longing for the place, regardless of how fleeting their time there had been.
Victoria swallowed hard, her throat feeling constricted. She remembered arranging for Jasmine to handle the final payment, but it seemed inappropriate to bring that up now.
Victoria tried to meet Alexander's gaze, but the moment she lifted her head, her heart pounded so fiercely that she had to look away. His piercing blue eyes seemed to see right through her, tearing her defenses apart.
"I... I will transfer the money to you right away," Victoria stammered, her voice choked with emotion.
"I was in town on business and thought I'd collect the payment," Alexander explained, his tone icy. He seemed keen to avoid any misunderstandings.
Victoria clutched the payment slip in her hand, unable to formulate a response. She knew he hadn't come to see her out of longing. He wouldn't, he couldn't. He had never loved her, and he never would.
Victoria wanted to say something, to appear strong and unaffected, but all she could do was bite her lip to keep her emotions in check. She felt as if she were on the brink of madness.
Alexander had appeared out of nowhere. They were worlds apart, and yet, here he was.
