Chapter 131 A Plea for Divorce

"Grandmother, Mom, please permit our divorce."

Victoria knelt before the two matriarchs, her hands clasping theirs in a plea that resonated with sincerity and desperation.

Old Lady Harrington woman, her heart heavy with sorrow, tenderly stroked Victoria's cheek. "My dear Vicky, you must have been wronged, haven't you?"

"I shall summon him this instant and ascertain the truth," Arabella declared, her hand already reaching for her phone.

"Mom, please, hear me out first," Victoria implored, her grip tightening around Arabella's hand, her eyes pleading for understanding.

She was at her wits' end, her only recourse to appeal to the wisdom of these two venerable women.

Arabella, initially inclined to expedite the conversation, found herself compelled to listen in the face of Victoria's earnest entreaty.

"I am aware of your affection for me and your desire for my happiness, but matters of the heart cannot be compelled."

"But you are in love with him," the elderly lady interjected.

"No, that is a misconception, I do not harbor any love for him," Victoria gently refuted.

The revelation left both Arabella and the grandmother with a hollow sensation in their hearts. Observing Victoria's serious and sincere demeanor, they found themselves at a loss.

"Grandmother, Mom, please grant us this divorce. I believe, were my parents still amongst us, they would wish for us both to have an opportunity at a fresh start," Victoria continued.

"What?" The elder Harrington woman was so taken aback that her voice quivered slightly.

The unexpected invocation of her deceased parents made it exceedingly difficult for the elderly woman to offer any further objections.

"Vicky, you must understand, your grandmother and I, as well as our entire family stands with you. If you still harbor feelings for him, we will not allow him to divorce you. If you have been wronged, we will defend you. As for that Isabella, she will never be a part of our family."

"Mom, I am deeply grateful for the love and care you, Grandmother, Grandfather, and Father have showered upon me, but I am contemplating embarking on a new chapter in my life."

"What kind of new life are you envisioning?" Arabella inquired once more.

"I am considering returning to our home in M country. The house remains, and I intend to seek new employment."

"But your parents are no longer with us, and we promised to look after you."

"Mom, the greatest care you can provide is to allow me to live the life I desire. I am twenty-three years old, and you need not worry about my ability to care for myself. I promise to strive for my own happiness."

"And what of Alex?"

"He belongs with Miss Montgomery. You should accept Miss Montgomery. She is intelligent and beautiful, and I am willing to let them be together."

Victoria found herself unable to disclose Isabella's pregnancy, fearing that it might lead them to believe she was insisting on the divorce due to the impending birth.

"My dear, has another man captured your heart?" the grandmother queried.

"No, Grandmother, we women can be radiant in our own right. You were the one who taught me that. Have you forgotten?"

"But my dear, I simply cannot... No, summon that insolent boy and demand his return. I wish to question him about the extent of my beloved granddaughter-in-law's suffering. You wouldn't be discussing divorce otherwise."

Old Lady Harrington remained reluctant to concede.

"Grandmother, I assure you I have not suffered. Our marriage was simply too hasty. We barely knew each other, we lacked understanding, and..."

"Grandmother."

Suddenly, a distant voice interjected.

"Adrian?"

Both the elder Harrington woman and Arabella were taken aback by his unexpected appearance.

"You scoundrel, you do remember to visit me after all."

Tears welled up in the elder Harrington woman's eyes.

Adrian approached them, "Aunt, Grandmother, I implore you to consent to Vicky's divorce from my cousin."
