Chapter 657 Such Passionate Gaze
"I can't give you a straight-up answer," Victoria said, looking at Daisy with a calm vibe.
No matter why Daisy was asking or what she had up her sleeve, Victoria was dead set on the idea that the future was a wild card.
Obviously, Daisy wasn't thrilled with that answer.
Jerome picked up on the awkward silence and jumped in, "I brought Daisy here today mainly to see Mr. Brett Harrington and Mrs. Eloise Harrington. Plus, I used to do some good business with Mr. Brett Harrington back in the day. He's retired now, but I still enjoy our chats."
"Alright." Victoria smiled, caught a sharp look from Jerome, then quickly looked away and sat quietly.
Having been a secretary at the Harrington Group for so long, she knew exactly who this guy was.
And businessmen always had their own agendas. Jerome's visit wasn't just a friendly drop-by.
But it wasn't her place to say anything, so she just listened.
"Do you take your daughter everywhere you go?" Arabella suddenly asked.
Jerome was caught off guard for a sec, then smiled, "Yeah, I want her to meet more people. She's my only daughter, and she'll have to take over the family business someday."
"Then you should start teaching her well now," Arabella added.
Maximus glanced at his wife and just smiled.
Given Brett and Eloise's seniority, it was more fitting for Arabella to say stuff like that.
Besides, Arabella never minded playing the tough role in front of outsiders.
"Of course, but if Mrs. Arabella Harrington wants to offer her guidance, she'd be honored."
"I can't even guide my own daughter, how can I guide someone else's?" Arabella shot back.
"I heard that Ms. Diana Harrington is always off doing archaeological work and rarely comes home. Why don't you take Daisy as your goddaughter?" Jerome suddenly suggested.
Arabella didn't see that coming.
The whole family was stunned.
"Great, then I'll have another mom to spoil me. Godmother sounds good," Daisy said happily.
"No, even though my daughter isn't with me, my daughter-in-law is here. I don't have the energy to care for another girl, especially since my daughter-in-law is expecting a child," Arabella said, holding Victoria's hand.
"If Mom takes a goddaughter, I'll be jealous," Victoria chimed in.
Arabella was pleasantly surprised when Victoria backed her up.
"I wouldn't be happy either. If someone else shares your attention, won't I lose favor?" Eloise added.
"Mom, you'll always be our precious one," Arabella quickly said.
Jerome felt pretty awkward, and Daisy's face darkened.
But Jerome quickly said, "In that case, we won't push it. But can Daisy at least invite you to dinner?"
"Of course."
"Can we add each other on Facebook? It would be easier to stay in touch." Daisy asked.
"Alright, but I don't really use Facebook much."
Arabella added Daisy as a Facebook friend anyway.
Just that little move made Jerome struggle to hide a smug grin.
When Alexander got home, he heard Daisy's voice and instinctively asked Mason, "Who's here?"
"It's Jerome and his daughter," Mason replied quietly.
Alexander didn't say anything else and walked in.
He felt a wave of relief seeing his wife sitting between Arabella and Eloise, with Arabella holding her hand.
Arabella let go of Victoria's hand as soon as she saw him, "You're back. Why don't you keep Jerome company for a bit? I'll go check on the kitchen."
"Alright," Alexander agreed, taking Arabella's seat.
Victoria felt a sense of relief seeing him return.
Alexander looked at her, "Did you miss me?"
Victoria stared at him, shocked. Why was he saying this in front of everyone?
Alexander added, "Why else would you keep staring at me?"
Victoria instantly blushed.
"Stop it," Maximus couldn't stand Victoria's embarrassment and reminded him sternly.
Alexander then sat properly, naturally holding her hand, and looked at Jerome and Daisy sitting diagonally across, "Mr. Bryant, Ms. Bryant, what brings you here?"
"We haven't visited your grandparents in years, and I miss the business days with your father, so we came to see them," Jerome replied smoothly.
"Alright." Alexander asked, "Did you throw up again today?", immediately turning his concern to Victoria beside him.
"Once," Victoria whispered.
Alexander suddenly felt a pang of heartache.
Why was pregnancy so tough?
Poor Victoria, already frail, now had to endure even more.
Daisy felt a twinge of jealousy seeing Alexander's gaze at Victoria, and even more so at Victoria's seemingly affected demeanor.
Were they truly in love?
But she had heard that Alexander married Victoria out of moral obligation.
Could Alexander be faking it?
It was easy for a man to pretend to like a woman.
After Daisy and Jerome drove away, she asked, "Dad, do you think Mr. Harrington really likes Victoria?"
"Why wouldn't he?" Jerome replied.
"But I heard Mr. Harrington married Victoria because her parents died while attending Mrs. Eloise Harrington's birthday party."
"But if a man marries a woman for a long time, and the woman is good at managing the marriage, they will develop feelings," Jerome said seriously, looking outside.
"Are you saying Victoria is very smart?"
"Daisy, don't fall for Alexander," Jerome warned.
Daisy felt a sharp sting in her heart.
"I brought you out not to fall for someone you shouldn't. You can only marry an unmarried, stable young man. I'm already looking for one for you," Jerome continued.
He could see how much the Harrington family cared for Victoria and how they didn't like his daughter.
He brought Daisy to the Harrington Mansion tonight to make her understand this.
But he was also worried that Daisy was too young, too defiant.
"Dad, I don't want to get married too soon. I want to find a boyfriend myself," Daisy said.
Jerome smiled, "Alright."
Some things, done differently, would become what she wanted.
He could easily make Daisy's wishes come true.
But Daisy's mind was filled with the image of Alexander's passionate gaze at Victoria.
