Chapter 78 Did she really like him?

He was wearing a white shirt that day, and she had on a white dress.
His father even joked that they looked like a couple.
Thinking back to that day, she started out thinking about him, but ended up missing her father dearly—the man who had always treated her as the apple of his eye. He had been gone for over two years, yet it felt as though he had never left.
Sometimes when she left the office, she would have this illusion that she needed to hurry home to eat the dishes her father cooked.
But... she had to return to reality eventually.
Where was her home now? Where was her father?
Tears started streaming involuntarily down her face again.
She lowered her head, causing her tears to fall onto her hands.
She wiped them away vigorously, feeling the tears flowing a bit too freely.
She turned away and wiped her eyes forcefully.
Alexander leaned in and handed her a tissue.
Victoria looked at it and had to take it, pulling several sheets to dry her tears.
"I didn't mean to make you cry. I just wanted to say, I remember that day you wore a white dress; you looked breathtakingly beautiful."
Victoria listened, forgetting to breathe for several seconds.
Holding her breath, she looked mistily in his direction. Why did it sound like... a confession?
Victoria quickly lowered her gaze again, feeling her mind clouded.
"Do you remember what I was wearing that day?" Alexander asked in a low voice.
Victoria shook her head. Alexander looked slightly disappointed for a moment but then awkwardly smiled politely.
"On Grandma's birthday, you were surrounded by many boys. You probably never lacked suitors, so you wouldn't notice what others were wearing," he said, his interest waning. He couldn't help but keep staring at her, not wanting to miss even the slightest change in her expression.
She wanted to say something but couldn't find the words. She had indeed had suitors in school, but her father had rejected them all, citing her pre-engagement as the reason.
In her father's eyes, his precious daughter wasn't someone any boy could easily win over. But...
Victoria quietly adjusted her breathing. She was determined to stay calm, to stop crying and overthinking. It wasn't the right time for this.
"I'm not as outstanding as them. I haven’t done enough to make you treat me differently, right?" Alexander continued.
"What are you trying to say?" Why bring up such distant memories? Why say things that could be misunderstood? Even if he wasn't afraid of her feelings resurfacing, she didn't want to fall for him again. She didn't want to be misled by his temporary kindness.
"Nothing. What clothes did you bring? Show me," Alexander said, looking at her with a gentle yet unyielding gaze, feeling somewhat annoyed that she couldn't grasp what he wanted.
Or maybe it was all in his own mind.
Victoria handed him the box.
Alexander examined it carefully, then looked at her. "You even brought my underwear. That was very considerate of you."
Victoria's face turned as red as a beet. Why did he have to mention it? The last time she brought him clothes, he had criticized her for not including everything, so she... remembered.
"In fact, I'm wearing new ones right now," Alexander abruptly stated, "Do you want to check?"
"I... I'll leave first," Victoria said in shock; wasn’t that too much information?
He suddenly approached her, startling her into leaping up and rushing out, her head still down.
Alexander remained seated, silently watching her go.
Did she really like him?
