Chapter 694 What Was There to Avoid Seeing?
The whole belief system she had just crumbled, and it hit her like a ton of bricks.
Victoria bolted outside, the cold wind smacking her in the face. She fumbled for her phone and dialed that oh-so-familiar number.
No answer.
Her anxiety skyrocketed.
A year ago, after Frank had been hanging around for a few days, she woke up and told him, "Frank, you can go back."
Frank replied, "When I was in deep trouble and hiding out abroad, your parents had my back."
He said he stuck around not because of Alexander, but because she was their daughter.
Those two had saved his life when he was on the brink, so he agreed to be her bodyguard for Alexander.
Victoria kept telling herself to stay cool, to keep it together.
If Frank was here because of her parents' good karma, then he wouldn't betray her. No way.
"Mrs. Harrington."
Finally, someone picked up.
Victoria broke down, clutching her chest as she squatted down, struggling to get the words out, "Where are you?"
"At the supermarket, grabbing some groceries."
The person on the other end sensed something was off in her voice and responded quickly.
"Come back soon."
Victoria hung up, still squatting there, pressing her eyes for what felt like forever.
She couldn't help but laugh at herself. How could she think Alexander knew about Strawberry?
Alexander didn't even know she had a kid, so how could he come to take her away?
Maybe the figure she saw before getting into the taxi wasn't him at all.
Shoure said he was chilling at the hotel, so she must've been mistaken.
She tried to calm herself down, telling herself not to freak out, but that day, she still decided to go out and hide again.
But when Eve was packing, she suddenly said, "We can't keep running like this. If the Harrington family finds out they have a kid out there, they'll definitely come for her unless we leave this city for good."
"Stop talking," Frank said softly.
Eve shot him a glare, then looked at Victoria.
Victoria knew Eve was right, but for now, this was all they could do.
Maybe soon, she'd have to run to another place, but that kind of life wasn't what she wanted.
However, if it came to that, she had no other choice, besides...
Victoria watched Eve and Frank busy themselves, then looked at Strawberry sleeping in the stroller, gently pulling it closer, just staring at that familiar face.
Maybe it was time to say goodbye.
Adrian's car had been parked outside for a while, but no one got out.
Frank eyed the car outside, the closed door, and got a bad feeling.
He turned to look inside, "Looks like Mr. Harrington is here."
Inside, Eve immediately dropped the baby clothes she was folding and headed for the door.
Victoria gripped the stroller tighter and called out, "Eve, please take Strawberry upstairs."
Eve glanced inside, got what Victoria meant, and quickly took Strawberry upstairs, stroller and all.
Frank figured it was time for a showdown and started walking towards the door.
"Frank."
Frank turned his head towards the sofa, barely making out Victoria's figure, but he knew she had called him.
"Close the door, please."
She sat there, head down, not moving an inch. Her hands were clenched tighter and tighter.
In the car.
Adrian had been gripping Alexander's arm for what felt like forever, even after the door shut.
Alexander sat there, cool as a cucumber, and said, "I came here with you to make you understand something. In this world, there's no one I can't have if I want them. So, drop your petty thoughts and don't try to mess with me."
Adrian felt a wave of shame wash over him and forced a bitter smile. He turned to Alexander, "So, can you not see Victoria?"
"Take me back to the hotel."
Alexander's voice was calm.
Adrian let go of him and started the car.
The door was shut tight, keeping everyone out.
But was he really just a guest?
Alexander didn't even glance at the place, just gave Adrian a little lesson and asked to be taken away.
But right then, his mind was filled with that familiar face, now with shorter hair, looking so fragile...
It started snowing again.
As the car turned around, big snowflakes began to fall.
But no one crossed the line again.
Adrian quickly drove Alexander away.
Victoria didn't look out the window.
Only Frank turned to her and said, "Mrs. Harrington, Mr. Harrington has left."
Victoria's hands were still tightly clasped, not moving.
Her eyes were blurry, heavy with unshed tears.
She turned her gaze, and in the blur, she seemed to see...
"It will definitely snow tomorrow, I promise." Alexander's gentle voice still echoed in her ears.
All love, in the end, was just like this.
How could their few years of marriage compare to the many years of childhood friendship?
Adrian took Alexander back to the hotel. As Alexander was about to get out, Adrian suddenly said, "Alexander, when are you leaving? I mean, we can stick together and look out for each other. Grandpa and Grandma also hope we can get along."
Adrian forced a smile.
Alexander got out of the car, his long legs hitting the ground, but his silence made him even more intimidating.
"Tomorrow." He left that single word hanging in the air as he walked away.
It seemed what he said in the car didn't comfort Adrian.
But actually, he had no reason to comfort Adrian.
He just...
After getting back to his room, Alexander saw two boxes with a note on top, [To Victoria, she forgot to take it. Please return it to her for me.]
Alexander picked up the box and saw it was a beauty device.
As the night deepened, he made a phone call, then stood by the window.
How long had it been since they last met?
From last Christmas until now, almost a year had passed.
How long did it take to forget someone?
No, he didn't feel anything, he never felt anything. He had already forgotten.
For someone he had already forgotten, what was there to avoid seeing?
Alexander turned and looked at the box, then quickly walked over, picked it up, and went out.
