Chapter 691 Looking for an Answer

Victoria still hadn't shown up, but Arabella was perched on her couch, eyes glued to the spotless table in front of her.

Nothing.

Arabella had figured Victoria had bolted and locked the door to keep her from seeing anything baby-related. But nope, nothing.

Arabella rushed back home the next day.

She'd messed up, big time.

She should've snuck in, caught Victoria off guard.

Looked like Victoria had clued in the neighbors, but the neighbor's kid clearly missed the memo.

Back home, Arabella stormed into her son's office, "You might be a dad."

Alexander was deep in work mode behind his desk. Hearing that, his heart skipped a beat, and he shot a look at Arabella.

Arabella's face was dead serious, "You need to call Frank. Only you can get him to spill."

"Since you didn't find anything, why do you still think you're gonna be a grandma?"

"It's the baby bottle and toys I found at Melissa's place."

"What?"

"And Victoria's place was spotless, like it had just been scrubbed down after a battle, but..."

"But what?"

Alexander stared at Arabella, confused, or maybe he was secretly hoping she'd drop more hints about her and him.

"The smell, a scent only a new mom and baby have."

Alexander squinted, glancing down at his papers.

The smell?

Too crazy.

"I know you're worried and want me to see her for answers, but Mom, I got my answer the day I let her go."

"An answer that's kept you up every night since?"

Arabella got up and walked to Alexander's desk, looking him dead in the eye, "Alexander, as your mom, I might know you better than you know yourself."

"Why's everyone so sure I haven't moved on? You all think I love her that much?"

"Maybe 'cause you smoke outside in the middle of the night? Or the sleeping pills by your bed?"

Alexander stared at Arabella. He rarely went back to the Harrington Mansion, but he didn't expect to be found out.

"Alex, you know, right? If you have a daughter but keep thinking you don't, you'll regret it later."

Arabella walked to the door but couldn't help throwing in a few more words.

A daughter?

No way.

Arabella left, but Alexander sat there for ages, unable to focus on those neat papers again.

Yeah, he wasn't doing great.

But as long as Victoria was okay, that was enough.

He didn't plan to mess with her anymore.

Even if he was in agony, he wouldn't mess with her again.

A woman had already made things so heartless, wasn't that enough to make him let go?

What would he become then?

For the rest of their lives, they'd marry others and never ask about each other again.

Just pretend they'd already lived this life.

In the afternoon, as soon as Alexander walked into the office, he got handed a plane ticket.

Alexander called Janaye into the office, "What's this about?"

"Mr. Harrington, Mr. Jane said your presence at this event is crucial, so I thought you should go."

Janaye, though nervous, still spoke up.

Alexander took a deep breath, glaring at her, "You know I've wanted to fire you for a long time."

Janaye's mind buzzed with fear, but she blurted out, "Then why haven't you fired me yet?"

Alexander thought he misheard and looked at her in disbelief.

Usually, Janaye wouldn't have the guts to ask that.

And why hadn't he fired her?

He looked down at Janaye, feeling totally drained, "Get out."

"Yes, sir."

Janaye was surprised he didn't blow up again, but she figured it was best to make a quick exit. Who knew if he'd flip out later?

"Wait, cancel the ticket."

Alexander handed the ticket back, waiting for her to take it.

Janaye turned around, a bit bummed, but quickly said, "I got a special fare ticket this time, can't be refunded."

She said it as she walked out, the door slamming shut behind her. Alexander could only helplessly place the ticket on the table.

If he wasn't scared and didn't care, then why couldn't he go?

Since it was all in the past and he had moved on, and considering that the attendees were all local big shots, he should go, both emotionally and logically.

Alexander stared at the ticket, his fingers gently pressing on it. Should he go?

That evening, Benjamin hosted a dinner, and Edward didn't bring his kid this time. Alexander walked in and asked, "Where's Orange?"

"She's at her grandparents' place."

Edward replied.

He hated it when his wife took the kid back to her parents' house. His in-laws always wanted Orange to stay overnight.

Alexander didn't say more and took his seat.

Sebastian immediately poured him some coffee and asked, "What are we drinking tonight?"

"Wine."

Alexander said casually.

The staff immediately went to fetch the wine they had stored.

Benjamin smiled, "I heard your mom went to see Victoria. How'd that go?"

"I heard she didn't see Victoria."

Alexander paused, holding the cup, then slowly picked it up and said calmly.

"Olivia said that if she could come back, at least there'd be someone to talk to. She shouldn't be lonely in Elysium Country, right?"

Edward suddenly chimed in.

He always felt that Olivia made Victoria sound too miserable, but she had only lost her parents. It shouldn't be that bad, and friends wouldn't disappear just because her parents died.

"She has friends."

Alexander said lightly.

He looked at the coffee in his hand, suddenly recalling the time he went to see her. Her house was lively.

"Olivia has become overly responsible these past two years. I said Victoria has friends outside, how could she be lonely with no one to talk to? But she insisted that not all friends can share true feelings."

Edward shook his head as he spoke but quickly looked up at Alexander.

Alexander looked back at him.

At their age, how could they not understand these things?

Alexander pretended not to get it, took a sip of his coffee.

The coffee wasn't great, kinda bitter.

He slowly put down the cup and said, "Bring a new pot of coffee."

The staff immediately went to get new coffee, but Benjamin said, "You already have trouble sleeping, don't change it. This is special coffee to help you sleep, made just for you."

Alexander fell silent, looking up at his childhood friends and couldn't help but laugh.

"Do you all think I haven't moved on from her?"

"Honestly?"

"Of course."

Alexander leaned back, thinking these people had known him for a long time, so he might as well let them speak freely.

"Yeah, we think you haven't moved on and you still think about her."

Edward immediately said.

"Love isn't something you can easily give up unless it wasn't true love."

Sebastian said.

"Tessa also said that if she were hurt that badly and I still let her go, regardless of the reason, she would never see me again."

Benjamin said slowly.

Everyone suddenly looked at Benjamin, expecting more.

Benjamin smiled, "She said she actually didn't want to leave."

The room fell silent for almost a minute. Alexander suddenly smiled, sighing helplessly, "I'll go to Elysium Country tomorrow."
