Chapter 139 The Man She Never Had

Out of nowhere, Charleston posed a question. "Mr. Harrington and Miss Montgomery are due to be wed soon, aren't they?"

Isabella responded with a courteous smile, "That's all up to Alex."

Turning to Alexander, Charleston proposed, "What if Victoria and I attend your wedding as the bridesmaid and best man? I'll even bring a generous gift."

Alexander interjected abruptly, "She can't be a bridesmaid."

Charleston, taken aback, asked, "Why not?"

Isabella's heart pounded in her chest, half-expecting Alexander to reveal that Victoria was his wife. She quickly interjected, "Vicky doesn't have to be a bridesmaid. She could be a flower girl or even play the role of my sister. As an only child, I've always longed for a little sister."

Alexander chuckled and turned to Victoria, asking, "Would you like to be her sister?"

Victoria, uncomfortable with the attention, glanced at Alexander and said with a measured tone, "You decide."

Internally, Victoria hoped that by the time of the wedding, she would be free and on her way back to M Country.

After departing, she didn't plan on returning.

It would all just be a dream.

A dream where she would wake to find her parents had embarked on a distant journey, leaving her alone, silently awaiting their return.

Charleston found the unfolding situation increasingly amusing.

Victoria's phone rang, interrupting the conversation. She checked the caller ID and quickly excused herself, "Sorry, I need to take this call."

Alexander remained silent, watching her intently.

He had a hunch it was Adrian.

That man was audacious.

She insisted she didn't have feelings for Adrian – that they were merely friends.

"It's definitely Adrian, they seem to chat on the phone quite a bit," Isabella whispered to Alexander, feigning intimacy.

"How would you know?" Alexander retorted, frowning.

Isabella noticed his unusual mood that evening. Was it because Charleston had shown interest in Victoria?

But wasn't Alexander supposed to be indifferent towards Victoria?

"I need to use the restroom," Charleston announced abruptly, standing up.

Alexander remained standing, his back towards them. Even with Charleston's departure, his gaze lingered on Victoria's empty seat.

He felt an unfamiliar heaviness in his chest, a frustration he couldn't quite understand.

Victoria had received a call from a coworker about working overtime. As she contemplated whether to return to the table or not, Charleston entered the spacious restroom. She acknowledged him with a nod, ready to leave.

"Is Miss Kensington with Mr. Harrington?" Charleston asked unexpectedly.

She looked at him, "Why would you say that, Charleston?"

"Mr. Harrington has been watching you."

"He's probably just lost in thought. It's not about me," Victoria explained.

Charleston observed her composed demeanor and smiled gently, "So, Victoria, are you single?"

Their eyes met, and suddenly she found herself at a loss for words.

She couldn't claim she was single—that would be a lie.

Yet, she couldn't say she wasn't either, since her marriage was nothing more than two certificates bound together. She had never truly possessed the man.

"Understood," Charleston said, smiling easily.

Victoria evaded further questions, aware she couldn't provide the answer he sought, and said, "A catch like you, Charleston, will surely find someone special."

"Yeah," Charleston mused, finding the young woman quite remarkable.

She was reserved, tactful, and knew how to compliment. When she smiled, it seemed to bring tranquility to the world.

He enjoyed that feeling, but he also sensed that she wasn't meant for him.

He never imagined that, in his thirties, he'd still face such challenges in matters of the heart.

"Let's head back," Charleston suggested.

"Yeah, Mr. Charleston, is it alright if I leave first?" Victoria paused.

Charleston looked at her, puzzled, "You have another commitment?"

"Yes," she nodded, smiling.

"Go ahead, I'll let Mr. Harrington know," he said, always finding it hard to resist a lady's request.

"Thank you, Charleston."

She nodded her gratitude and then walked away, but...
