Chapter 288 In Pursuit of the Truth

The echo of a harsh slap shattered the last vestiges of a man's illusions about a woman. Sebastian, finally regaining his composure, let out a bitter laugh. Life, it seemed, was always peppered with experiences too harsh to bear.As the night deepened, Alexander guided Victoria to the penthouse suite, gently laying her on the plush bed. Victoria's cheeks flushed a deeper shade of red, her long eyelashes fluttering occasionally. Her delicately arched eyebrows added a charming touch to her face, while a few stray hairs lay gently against her skin.Standing before her, Alexander silently observed her drunken state. Unable to resist, he softly whispered, "Victoria?""Hmm?" Victoria stirred slightly, merely tilting her head in response.A pang of concern shot through his heart. He reached for the hangover remedy that he had prepared earlier, placing it on the bedside table. He then looked at Victoria's drunken state and softly instructed, "Victoria, open your mouth.""Hmm?" Victoria's only response was a faint sound at the mention of her name.Alexander sighed. Looking at her soft, fragrant lips, he impulsively placed the medicine in his mouth and leaned over. If she were sober, she would never allow such an intimate act."Cough, cough!" Victoria suddenly choked.Alexander's heart pounded with worry, but he quickly reacted, immediately fetching her water and assisting her to drink.Once Victoria had swallowed the medicine and felt a bit better, she fell asleep, leaning drowsily against him. Yet, Alexander found himself unable to tear his gaze away from her.A few days prior, he had journeyed to Danisland.Victoria had used her tears and apparent fragility to convince him that the accident had been a mere burglary, and that the perpetrator had been apprehended. He desperately wanted to believe her, but it seemed implausible that a criminal would remain indifferent after encountering such a beautiful girl. The restraints, the signs of strangulation, the handprint on her face that hadn't faded even after ten days, and the severe bruise on her knee were all too telling.Alexander shuddered at the thought of what else she might have endured. All he could do was hold her tightly in his arms."Alexander," Victoria murmured in her sleep.Hearing her murmur his name, Alexander felt his eyes well up with unshed tears."I'm here," he replied softly, holding her as she lay against him.Victoria claimed she didn't love him, yet in her drunken state, she called his name with such tenderness."Alexander," Victoria murmured again, her voice breaking into a sob.Alexander gently kissed her forehead, guiding her hand to rest on his waist.Suddenly, Victoria clung to him tightly, burying her face in his chest, her sobs escalating into uncontrollable crying. She resembled a young child who had suffered a great trauma, seeking solace in the arms of an adult.Looking down at her, Alexander realized that she was still not fully conscious. Her crying stirred something deep within him. All he could do was hold her close. When Victoria finally fell asleep, she reverted back to the obedient girl he knew, her eyes swollen from crying.Around four in the morning, Victoria rose from the bed and stumbled towards the bathroom. After a struggle, she managed to find the light switch. She then seated herself on the toilet. The hangover remedy was beginning to take effect.Victoria opened her eyes, feeling disoriented. She surveyed the luxurious bathroom, finding it unfamiliar. After using the toilet, she hurriedly exited. She remembered drinking with Alexander and his friends the previous night, but her memory was a blur after that. Victoria hoped that Alexander was still with her.Was this a hotel?Surveying the layout of the room, she turned to look at the bed, and her heart pounded in her chest. There was a man on the bed. She stared at the figure with a sudden surge of fear.Glancing down at her pajamas, Victoria felt a wave of panic wash over her. The only thing she wanted in that moment was to exact revenge on the man lying on the bed.
